27 NOVEMBER 3 JULY 2023 2023 Message from the Head of Prep

This weekend marks the start of Advent and preparations are already well underway for our Nativity performances and Carol Services. Pre-Nursery got into the spirit of things by dressing up in Christmas costumes and Year 2 made Christingles. Although it might be hard to imagine playing summer sports when the weather is so cold, we were delighted to be chosen as one of the top 50 prep schools in the country for cricket by the Cricketer Magazine’s Good Schools Guide.

It was very encouraging to see some of Upper Prep throwing themselves into this year’s Primary Maths Challenge and we look forward to discovering who has qualified for the Bonus Round in February. The Anti-Bullying theatre show and workshops that took place this week were well-received. Thank you to Mr O’Neill and all those involved with arranging these events. Well done to Morton for lifting the House Cup in both the Lower and Upper Prep. Can another House do the double before the end of term?

Yesterday marked Saint Andrew’s Day and we celebrated with a special Mass which was Father Stephen’s last with us as our parish priest. From all of the Cranmore School community, we thank him for his five years of dedicated service.

Mr Heaver

Primary Maths Challenge The first round of the Primary Maths Challenge took place during the week beginning 13th November. All students in Year 6 as well as the top two sets in Year 5 took part in this year’s challenge. Our students competed against students from across the whole of the UK. This year’s paper was easier than the previous year. Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates were awarded by The Mathematical Association to each student, depending upon their marks obtained out of 25. The students who have been successful in this challenge will be invited to take part in the Bonus Round, which will take place during the week beginning 5th February 2024. Each student enjoyed the opportunity to stretch their brain and think in different ways. The Maths Department would like to congratulate all those who took part in this year’s challenge. Ms Fagan

Anti-Bullying Presentation for Years 1 to 5 As part of Anti –Bullying Week, Alice from Openview Education visited Cranmore to give a presentation on the theme of ‘Make a Noise about Bullying.’ Pupils in Years 1 to 5 were asked to use role play and the story of two puppets to equip them with the skills to respond to bullying situations. Year 6 took part in a workshop to help to equip them with the skill set to 'Make a Noise about Bullying'. The pupils looked at using 'shoulders of strength' and 'sentences of strength' to help to encourage them to speak out and to ask for help if they need it. Mr O’Neill

This Week’s House Cup Winners

Year 4 French Lessons Year 4 pupils have been using loop cards in our French lessons this week to practise the vocabulary for items in their pencil case. Mrs Spooner

Year 2’s Preparations for Christmas Year 2 enjoyed making Christingles as they learnt about Advent and the preparation for Christmas.

Nursery News At Forest School, Ellie focused on the children’s senses this week. They helped her to make play dough and added cloves and cinnamon for a lovely festive scent. They also had fresh lemons and oranges to squeeze and make their own fruit juice!

For St Andrew’s Day, the children listened to the story of St Andrew and learnt how he is also the patron saint of our school. They enjoyed colouring their flags and making delicious shortbread for the celebration. In the art session, the focus was on patterns, and this was linked to our learning about St Andrew by making their very own kilts.

Finally, Christmas has arrived in the Pre-Nursery and the children have really enjoyed dressing up in the Nativity costumes!

Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Sport Update Cross-Country On Friday, we took Year 3, Year 4 and Year 6 over to St Edmund’s School for their annual Inter Schools Cross Country Event. There were over 100 pupils in each race and we had numerous top ten finishers across all age groups. To end a great afternoon of running off, our Year 6 boys won the team event. Well done to the Cranmore Cross Country Team.

Rugby Many matches have taken place across the last week against St Paul's, Feltonfleet, Danes Hill and Rokeby. Football The U11 A team had a great experience playing at the National IAPS at Millfield on Sunday. The team performed admirably and were a credit to the school.

Sport Update Cricket Cranmore is honoured to be chosen as one of the top 50 Prep Schools in the country for Cricket by the Cricketer Magazine’s Good Schools Guide. The selection was based upon our provision of the sport, opportunities to represent the school in fixtures and our outstanding facilities. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the hard work and commitment from staff, pupils and parents. Well done, everyone!

Rugby Masterclass Ahead of the U15 Rugby Regional Semi-Final (National Cup), the U15s had a great afternoon last week with no fewer than three Internationals assisting with their Games lessons. Harlequins and England players Alex Dombrandt and Danny Care, along with our very own Mr Everitt, delivered a rugby masterclass helping the boys improve their skills. Goal kicking, punting, scrum-half passing and ball carrying were the areas of focus. Everyone had a great afternoon which proved great preparation for their Cup match this week.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

St Andrew

Chaplaincy News Tutor groups have been visiting the school chapel to spend time in prayer and silence. It is a wonderful way to start the day, offering it up to God and asking for His help. Adoration continues to take place every Wednesday from 8am to 8.25am in the school chapel. Our St Andrew’s Day Mass on Thursday was a wonderful occasion when the community came together to give glory to God.

Reflection

This week we focus on the Feast of Christ the King and St Andrew. On Sunday, the church celebrated the Feast of Christ the King; it was the last Sunday in ordinary time. St Andrew is the patron of Cranmore school. He is also the patron saint of Scotland and Ukraine. Andrew was a fisherman before he and his brother Simon Peter became two of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Prayer

Loving and compassionate God, We believe that you are present. Help us throughout this year to remain close to you.

Help us to be the best that we can be so that we can bring out the best in those around us. Lord, we recognise that we cannot do everything but, in Your strength, and through Your Spirit, we can do great things together. Stay with us on our journey throughout this year.

Amen
