29 JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 Message from the Head of Prep

Well done to those involved with last weekend’s Murray Cup success. The attitude and performance of our pupils was very impressive. Another busy week of sport has seen lots of rugby fixtures played, including matches against KCS Wimbledon, Shrewsbury House and Donhead. Our Under 10s enjoyed their basketball games against RGS Prep.

Pre-Nursery, Nursery, Reception and Year 1 enjoyed the visit of parents and carers this afternoon. It has been wonderful to see each of the year groups exploring this term’s topics, which include ‘As Cold as Ice’ in Reception and Africa in Year 2.

Congratulations to everyone in Tylor and Morton for their successes in raising the House trophies. The excitement is building in Upper Prep House meetings as they prepare to contest the House Music Competition.

We marked National Story Telling Week with assemblies on the joy that sharing a story can bring and the importance of developing our imaginations so that we can immerse ourselves in fictional realms. It is amazing how great writers are able to bring their stories to life and plans are already in place for some author visits after halfterm along with an array of other activities to celebrate our Book Week.

Finally, good luck to all of those involved with the Dunckley Shield this weekend.

Mr Heaver

Lower Prep News Luke L in Year 2 has been studying the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant at home and was so inspired by the message that he wanted to share it with his friends. Miss Gallop invited him to read the passage aloud to the Lower Prep for our Bible reading in Assembly on Monday. Luke spoke with poise and confidence and it was a great celebration of our Trust Value of Faith.

Reception News Pupils in Reception have really been enjoying their topic ‘As Cold As Ice’ this half term. They have fully immersed themselves into learning about polar animals and regions, becoming polar explorers and learning about ice. The children explored how they could melt ice and predicted how quickly it would take in the classroom. In Expressive Arts and Design, the children have created a polar box craft. The children started collaging the paper box, then painted the inside and made the background snowy. Finally, they cut pictures very carefully and added them to the box. Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero were very proud of the children’s creations and the children can’t wait to take them home! Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero

Year 2 News Year 2 have created their own African sunset paintings and learning all about African cultures. They designed and made their own African necklaces using tribal colours. Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Stefano

Nursery News All the Nursery children have been having a fun week celebrating Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon! They explored noodles and vegetables with chopsticks in the tuff tray and made stir fry in the cooking session to eat for a tasty snack. They have participated in writing numbers 1 to 10 in Chinese, making lanterns and taking part in a Dragon dance in the Gym! Ms Luke, Director of Nursery

Drawing Club It was challenge week at Drawing Club this week! We were using sticks to draw that incrementally became longer and more challenging to draw with! The boys enjoyed problem-solving the task and finding ways to control the willow to try to capture the form of the objects in front of them. Mrs Sanders, Head of Art

Upper Prep Wicked Writers Competition In 2023, the National Literacy Trust recorded that one in seven young writers are ‘social writers’ as they either write to support causes and issues they care about or because it makes them feel connected to the world. In addition, their latest research shows that giving children and young people the opportunity to get inspired to write through literacy events can positively influence their writing enjoyment and frequency. The National Literacy Trust has teamed up with stage musical Wicked and its acclaimed Wicked Active Learning cultural and social education programme to run an exciting social action writing competition encouraging school pupils to write about a positive environmental change they want to see. Wicked Writers: Be the Change asks 9 to 14 year-olds to harness the power of persuasive writing to think about any environmental issue they feel passionately about.

All Upper Prep and Senior pupils are invited to take part in the Wicked Writers Competition which the National Literacy Trust is running. I will be running drop-in sessions on Friday lunch times (13:15 to 13:45) starting on Friday 9th February for pupils to work on their submissions which will be based on environmental issues close to their hearts.

All shortlisted young writers will be published in the Wicked Writers Anthology and receive free copies of the publication. Prizes include: •

Free class tickets to see Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London

Author visits from MG Leonard and

Curated book bundles.

The deadline for entries will be 11th March 2024 and the winners will be announced on Earth Day, 22th April 2024. If your child is interested, they should speak to me in the Senior Library.

Mrs Watkinson, School Librarian
