4 DECEMBER 2023 3 JULY 2023 Message from the Head of Prep
Another busy week has seen us play some entertaining rugby and earn some hard-fought victories over a number of age groups and our swimmers turned in some great times in the gala against Boxgrove. The 'Around the World' Drama workshop was enormous fun for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and it was clear that Upper Prep are getting excited about the final countdown for the termly merit totals and House Cups.
We have enjoyed a magical start to Advent with our Junior Chamber Choir singing so beautifully at All Saint's Church, Ockham, on Sunday, followed by two incredible Nativity performances. It was the turn of Nursery, Reception and Year 1 on Tuesday to present to us ‘Away in a Manger’ and then on Wednesday we saw Years 2 and 3 perform ‘The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’. A huge thank you to everyone involved: the parents who have listened to their children rehearsing at home; the staff who have taken time to organise the Nativities; the catering team for treating everyone to hot drinks and mince pies; the facilities and IT teams for helping with the staging and lighting; and of course, the children themselves who did not let a large audience phase them and delivered their lines so articulately and confidently. The children really brought a sense of festive cheer to the week and we still have our Carol Services and Christmas Jumper Day to look forward to next week!
Mr Heaver
Year 2 and 3 Nativity: The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All Years 2 and 3 gave us a fantastic Nativity performance this year with, ‘The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’. From the singing angels, to the dancing sheep, all the children performed with the utmost poise and professionalism. We were incredibly proud of them all and a big thank you to all the staff for their hard work behind the scenes.
EYFS and Year 1 Nativity: Away in a Manger The EYFS and Year 1 gave a wonderful performance of ‘Away in a Manger’ on Tuesday morning. We were so impressed at the confidence from Year 1 to deliver their lines so clearly, and the singing and acting from the EYFS really gave that extra special magic to the event and reminded everyone of the real meaning of Christmas. A huge thank you to everyone involved.
Drama Workshop for Lower Prep Year 2, Year 1 and Reception were treated to a fantastic drama workshop this week by Perform. The theme was Around the World and the children were led on an imaginary journey to Australia. They enjoyed singing and dancing and shared ideas on what they could see and hear. The children were so engaged in the workshop and felt like they were really there! Mrs Prothero
Year 4 Study Magnetism Pupils in Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed a hands-on lesson on Magnetism this week. The aim was to design a game using magnets, a white board and some paper clips. Dr Verny-White
Lower Prep Choral Performance in Ockham Church
The Junior Chamber Choir were welcomed to the Family Service at All Saints’ Church in Ockham on Sunday 3rd December. This is a tradition started many years ago by Father Freed and one which we are very proud to continue. The choir sang ‘Carol of the Children’, conducted by Mrs Jo Carpenter and assisted by Mr Roberts on the piano. The service was led by Revd Anna Norton, and she commented on the pupils’ impeccable manners and beautiful singing. Thank you to all the families who came to support them. Miss Gallop
Year 2’s China Topic The children in Year 2 absolutely loved hearing all about Beijing and Shanghai from Josephine (Shan's mother). She shared some amazing facts and incredible photographs. The children asked some interesting questions and it ended with them all receiving a special gift from China. We really appreciated Josephine taking the time and giving us all a gift. We all felt very lucky. They also loved learning all about Chinese New Year and dragon and lion dances. They made their own dancing dragons and then performed a dragon dance.
This Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations to Tylor House in the Lower Prep and Borelli House in the Upper Prep on gaining the highest number of merits this week!
Science Club News Below is an article written by one of our pupils about Science Club, a copy of the ‘Thank You’ notes the pupils wrote for their invaluable technicians and a summary of the feedback received during a recent survey of the Science Club members. Dr Verny-White Science Club is a wonderful club that takes place on Monday evenings. In Science club we learn about all kinds of interesting topics not covered, or not covered in detail, in the regular curriculum. We learn about a range of exciting areas of science; our experiments could be testing foods for starch one week and finding out the pH of fruits the next. A few intriguing experiments we have carried out are card towers, using Iodine to test for starch, discovering whether gases have mass, creating circuits and many other experiments are sure to come! Science Club is an amazing club and I find I have come to appreciate science more than ever since I started last year. By Hugo Booth
Eco-Council Christmas Tips TOP TIPS TO REDUCE PLASTIC AT CHRISTMAS
1. Re-use gift bags from last year and recycle your Christmas cards to make gift tags for next year.
2. Wrap your presents in brown paper. You can decorate with dry materials and reusable ribbon and use paper tape to secure it.
3. Make your decorations from natural objects like holly or recyclable materials such as paper make great origami decorations. On Monday lunchtime we will be making some plastic-free decorations if you would like to join us (1.35pm in the Art room).
Sport Update It has been an outstanding period of rugby over the last week for the Lower and Upper Prep. Last Friday, we had block fixtures for both our U8s and U10s. The U10s played at Parkside winning all the matches and the U8s were excellent in their first match against Danes Hill on the Paddock. The U9s and U11s played against Shrewsbury House on Monday and Tuesday respectively. From 9 matches, Cranmore won 8 and drew 1. The U13s and U12s were in action on Wednesday also against Shrewsbury House, with our U9s playing against St George's on Thursday. Today, the U10s have a squad playing against Boxgrove school with the rest of the year group playing internal matches. Good luck to our U11A side playing at the Danes Hill rugby tournament tomorrow. We also had a fantastic swimming gala on Wednesday against Boxgrove. Senior Swimming Five of our senior swimmers were selected to represent London South in the ISA National Swimming finals last Friday (1st December) swimming at the iconic venue, The London Aquatic Centre. Swimmers competed in individual and relay events, narrowly missing out on medal finishes with some swimming personal best times. Well done to all the boys that took, part—Jensen W, Jake B, Daniel B, Freddie R, Henry C. It was a great achievement. The Upper Prep Carol Service will take place on Wednesday 13th December at 6.30pm. The Senior Carol Service will take place on Thursday 14th December at 7pm. Reflection Advent is a four week time of preparation that the Church gives us before Christmas. It is easy to miss the mystery of Jesus' birth and the mystery of the Incarnation. Prayer God of hope, we cling to you, for you renew the face of the earth. Through the gift of your Son, our Lord Jesus, we follow you on the path of dawn. Enlightened by your love and wisdom, help us to lead each other and all creatures back to your open arms. Amen
