Cranmore Prep Chronicle 9 October 2023

9 OCTOBER 2023 3 JULY 2023 Message from the Head of Prep We enjoyed a wonderful start to Monday morning with our African Drumming assembly and workshops. Our celebrations of Black History Month continued with some inspiring House Assemblies and the week was bookended with another special event when we were able to join an online session with the children’s author Atinuke. The glorious October weather continued to shine upon us for the start of the week and the playing fields looked resplendent as we played host to teams from Rokeby, Broomwood and Parkside, enjoying success across various age groups. Even though the weather looks like it might be turning, the sports fixtures continue in earnest and it has been very encouraging to see those representing Cranmore being magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat. I would particularly like to congratulate our U11 ski team who finished 2nd and 3rd in the ESSKIA national finals in Norwich last weekend. This morning we were able to gather as a community to celebrate a special Harvest Mass where our thoughts and prayers turned not only to those in need in our area but also to those caught up in the conflict in the Middle East. Thanks must go out for the generous donations that were made for the LeatherHEAD START charity and for the fundraising efforts going into next week’s Action Day. Good luck to all involved with your rehearsals and final preparations!

Mr Heaver

African Drumming Workshops We had an exciting start to the week with African Drumming workshops for pupils in Reception - Year 4. The pupils loved hearing and refining the rhythms demonstrated by the workshop leader, Ronald. His spirt and energy throughout the whole day was palpable, and all the pupils benefitted from being immersed and experiencing different cultures and traditions. This was part of our Black History Month celebrations which are taking part throughout this month across the whole school.

Remembrance Poems Here are two more of the superb poems written by our budding Year 5 and 6 poets for last week’s Remembrance poetry workshop with poet Laura Mucha. Mrs Watkinson, School Librarian

War Death by Arthur W (Year 5) The dry drought in the unkind,

Lost ones fly past,

The love in their body you’ll never find,

As you float fast,

The sorrow and sigh

The ones you’ll never see again,

The bleed and die,

But you will find them in Heaven in their den,

The air crafts fly up high.

Although there is a long way until then.

Whirling—whirling. Even if you take a bad fall, You can still go to the hospital, When the explosions go KABOOM! They leave a musty grey gloom. Darkness—darkness. The smoky mist, That you can’t punch with your fist, But instead you breathe it up and splutter, Like the oxygen goes down the gutter, It takes away your breath And leaves you with death. Choking—choking.

All you can do is hope that others don’t end up like you And that they charge through, Saving your beloved country home, Where their medals can be shown.

Remembrance Poems The Blood-Stained Flower by Noah M (Year 6) Remember, remember the 11th November Keep it in your mind forever.

A field where the blood-stained flowers lay, A field where the children used to play, Where the horses slowly chomp on the hay, Chomp…chomp… Oh, how they love the warmth of cheers, Cuddles, kisses and floods of tears,

Friends, family, brothers and sisters. Loving, caring, sharing… Listen to the whirr of planes, The wrench of pain And the unforgettable stains. Remember the hate of war

And the constant roar. Aching, loathing, booming… We will remember those who lost their lives, Who perished and died. They were the ones who carried on, They were the ones who were courageous and strong. They fought for their country, They fought for their rights. So, please remember them.

WE WILL REMEMBER.

Year 2 News The Year 2 pupils have designed, constructed and decorated their own castles. They then learnt about all the ways in which enemies could attack a castle. They have also enjoyed playing maths games to develop their knowledge of number bonds as well as learning about forces through building catapults.

Tylor House Celebrates Black History Month Tylor’s House Meeting last week involved a presentation by Oscar and Teddy on inspirational black women, followed by a quiz as part of our Black History Month celebrations.

Nursery News The Pre-Nursery have had a great time learning all about our topic of Autumn and Harvest. They used mixed media and shape, to create their Scarecrow pictures and used the interactive whiteboard to drag different vegetables to fill their basket. They developed their fine motor skills by digging out the seeds from the pumpkins and using the tweezers to select the seeds to use in their cooking session on Thursday to create bird food. Last week they enjoyed an Autumn nature walk and collected various Autumn leaves for their activity of sorting leaves into ‘big’ and ‘small’. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Reception News Reception have been talking and thinking about what job we might like to have when we grow up. We drew and then painted a picture to share our ideas. Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero were so proud of the detail that we added. Can you guess what we wanted to be?

Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero

House Cup Winners Congratulations to Stokes House in the Lower Prep and Borelli House in the Upper Prep who gained the highest number of merits this week!

Sport Update Skiing Success

Huge congratulations to our skiing squad who competed at the ESSKIA Finals last weekend in Norwich. Our U11 teams finished 2nd and 3rd. Our U14 team also finished 2nd in the country with Year 6 pupil Mathias P finishing as the fastest U12 skier overall. All our skiers were superb throughout the competition, and it was great to see them performing so well on the biggest stage.

We have had some great year group football fixtures over the last week. While the U8A competed at the KCJS tournament last Friday, the rest of the year group played against Danes Hill on our three pitches on the paddock. On Saturday, both the U10s and U11s were in action against Feltonfleet. Out of the 6 matches played, Cranmore only lost one. It was the U9s turn to play Danes Hill on Monday, and then Parkside on Thursday. The U11s had a great triangular on Tuesday against Broomwood and Rokeby. On the same afternoon, the U11A team played Rokeby in the quarterfinal of the Surrey Cup. Despite being 2-0 up, unfortunately the final score ended up being 3 -4 to Rokeby after extra-time. Nonetheless, it has been a great cup run for the team.

Sport Update This was our second week of invasion and evasion games in PE. This has included handball, capture the flag and basketball. The pupils have very much enjoyed improving these important fundamental principles through various activities.

Congratulations to our U15 rugby team who are through to the next round of the National Cup after beating Gordon’s 63-5 last Saturday.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Harvest "Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible." St Francis of Assisi Chaplaincy News This week we celebrated the Feast of Carlo Acutis on Thursday. In Year 4 RE we had fun starting to build a scene from the Bible. Our thoughts and prayers are for all those in the Middle East who are suffering at this time.

Reflection

Truly God has given us much. Creation is such a wonderful gift and within it we see the abundance of God’s love. This week seek to be thankful for all that we have received and look to give back where we can. Be encouraged to put love into action, perhaps by taking a bag of donations to the second hand shop or by visiting an elderly neighbour. Jesus gives Himself fully to us in the Eucharist; try to visit the chapel or a church this week and spend time with Jesus. Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for us. Prayer Lord, we thank you for the harvest earth has produced. These gifts are witness to your infinite love; may the seeds of charity and justice also bear fruit in our hearts. We pray for Israel and for peace in the Middle East. May Your Kingdom come, Your will be done. Amen
