Message from the Head of Prep

Our School Councillors began the week with a trip to the Houses of Parliament. As they edge towards the end of their time as class representatives, it was a great chance for them to walk the corridors of power and discover more about the workings of Westminster. Monday’s Year 3 Art collaboration with St Teresa’s and Manor House School was a great success. The children produced some wonderfully creative pieces and had a lot of fun in the process.

Sports fixtures continue in earnest with our children representing the school in tennis and cricket fixtures as well as events for our skiers, swimmers, Aquathlon team and athletics squad. Parents have been able to experience the Music Department’s Open House this week and our aspiring pianists put on an incredible concert on Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday morning, 1RN treated us to a wonderful assembly about the amazing world in which we live. Then in the afternoon, we were able to welcome parents to tour our Lower Prep in readiness for their children making the move into Reception in September.

Looking ahead to next week, children in Year 4 and above will sit their summer assessments. We wish them all the best of luck.

School Council

Visit to the Houses of Parliament

Members of the Upper Prep School Council enjoyed a fascinating trip to the Houses of Parliament this week. The visit began with a tour which took us through the Victoria Tower, then into the House of Lords, Central Lobby, the House of Commons and Westminster Hall. The pupils then took part in a workshop exploring the law-making process and they put their debating skills to good use.

Mr Harris, Director of Music

It has been wonderful to see so many parents visiting their child’s individual music lessons during the Music Department Open House week. I’m sure that all the parents have picked up some very useful tips from our experienced Visiting Music Teachers. We were also privileged to hear some very promising young pianists perform in the Upper Prep piano concert. Some of the pupils performed from music, others by memory, but all played with such style and confidence. My thanks to Mr P. Roberts and Mrs Thornton for hosting this very enjoyable concert.

Music News

All the Year 3 children from Cranmore, St Teresa’s and Manor House came together on Monday to participate in a collaborative art event.

The children were introduced to the artist Matisse and his famous technique of ‘painting with scissors’.

Using his art as inspiration, the children used coloured card to make their own painting with scissors design, including specific elements of Matisse’s work like positive and negative shapes. The children thoroughly enjoyed working alongside each other and the results were amazing, as you can see from these photographs.

In the Pre-Nursery the children have been having fun learning all about dinosaurs, they enjoyed making dinosaur footprint pictures and making dinosaurs using different media and playdough. The Nursery children had fun making their number lines and using the Numicon to build the corresponding number towers. Mrs Chan went to the moon last night and brought back some moon rock which the children loved exploring in the tuff tray! At Forest School, they enjoyed swinging in the hammocks and having fruit dipped in chocolate on the fire pit.

It has been Children’s Mental Health Week and we focused on ‘my voice matters,’. The children contributed some great ideas in our small group discussions! Mrs O’Neill in the RE session focused on ‘May is the month of Mary,’ they all enjoyed making a bookmark, placing flowers and statues of Mary on our RE table. Some of the children even made their own Rosary beads with playdough.

This Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations to Radford House in Lower Prep and Stokes House in Upper Prep for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

1RN Assembly

1RN performed beautifully in their Class Assembly on Thursday morning. They recited a poem on the theme of The Rainforest which they had written themselves. They sang the song The Whole World in His Hands’ and prayed, thanking God for the amazing world in which we live. Well done, 1RN!

Reception loved dressing up as Fire Officers this week. We were very lucky to receive a box full of stories, puzzles and games from the Fire Brigade which we have thoroughly enjoyed all week. We look forward to the Fire Engine coming in next week and exploring the vehicle and the tools they use to save lives.

Sport Update

Over the last week, there have been no fewer than 30 cricket fixtures across the Prep School. Opposition schools have included Aldro, RGS, Rokeby, Broomwood, Shrewsbury House and St George's. Alongside the cricket matches, tennis has also been taking place most days.

On Monday, members of our golf squad, which included pupils from Year 6 to Year 8, played against Feltonfleet on our very own 'Crangusta.' The 6-hole Par 3 golf course on the Henderson looked and played beautifully. The match was hotly contested with some outstanding golf on show. We are certainly looking forward to playing more matches over the summer. Also on Monday, over 20 members of our ski squad participated in the National Indoor Championships at Hemel Hempstead. We had many top 10 finishers and while we await the overall scores, we understand that our two Senior teams came both 1st and 2nd.

St Teresa's Year 6 pupils came to Cranmore on Tuesday to play tennis against our U11 multi-sports cohort. Many doubles matches took place and lots of fun was had by all. Wednesday also saw pupils from U9s to U15s participate in the Schools Aquathlon at St Teresa's.

Sport Update

Last Saturday, four Cranmore boys swam in the Regional round of the English Schools primary relay event at Guildford Spectrum. They successfully qualified for both finals on the night, finishing 7th overall in the Medley event, taking 7 seconds off their qualifying time and 6th overall in the freestyle event again beating their qualifying time. The boys swum exceptionally well against some very strong competition. Well done swimmers (Charlie S, Sebastian W, Jack T, Arlo W).

Schools Aquathlon

We had 17 pupils from Year 4 to Year 9 taking part in the Schools Aquathlon event this week which was held at St Teresa’s. This consisted of swimming a set distance and then transitioning into a run as a continuous event. Pupils were faced with new challenges particularly in the transition area showing resilience and determination to finish the race. All the pupils performed extremely well with some outstanding results. Charlie S (Year 6) was crowned overall winner for the Super Sprint event, and Daniel B (Year 8) won overall in the Sprint event. Amazingly, Cranmore managed podium finishers in all age groups. Well done to all involved for their efforts and achievements.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Pentecost

"Bethlehem

was God with us, Calvary was God for us, and Pentecost is God in us."

Bible Reading

Reflection

A Reading from the Book of Acts

Amen

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Reflection

This week we focus on the Feast of Pentecost. This is a major feast within the church. The Holy Spirit renews and changes the Disciples into Apostles followers into leaders.

We often feel that we must carry all we must do, yet Pentecost reminds us that we are not the ones who do the work but rather the Spirit of God.

Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth.
