Message from the Headmaster
The condensed school week meant that it was extremely busy and action-packed with fixtures, coronation activities and insightful assemblies.
On Wednesday, Year 3 joined the St Teresa’s pupils for an art masterclass on the French visual artist, Henri Matisse, while the Year 1 and 2 pupils attended a music festival. Pupils from Cranmore and St Teresa’s who are taking part in the Tosca performance at Grange Park Opera spent Thursday at rehearsals in London. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to refine and develop their musical and dramatical talents.
On Friday, it was a hive of activity as we began some celebrations in advance of the coronation tomorrow. We had a Coronation cake competition with proceeds going to the Prince’s Trust; themed lunches in the dining room; themed lessons and quizzes; acrostic poems and writing competitions; and our Eco Council confirmed plans for our Coronation Garden at Forest School.

Primary Maths Bonus Challenge
Cranmore students successfully answered a variety of multiple-choice mathematics problems in the Primary Maths Challenge and those students scoring 20 or above out of 25 marks participated in the Bonus Round, which took place during the week beginning 6th February 2023.
Five Year 6 Cranmore students were awarded the following certificates and lapel badges:
• Colin C received a Silver certificate and lapel badge
• Benjamin M, Ben T, Daniel D and Edward W each received a Participation certificate.
Each student enjoyed taking part in the challenge and, most importantly, it showed them that Maths can be fun. The Maths Department teachers are extremely proud of each student’s success.

Coronation-themed Activities in the Library
To mark the King’s coronation, our Upper Prep pupils have enjoyed taking part in a range of coronation-themed quizzes and puzzles during break-times in the library this week. There will be coverage of Friday’s themed lunch, cake competition and sale in next week’s Chronicle.

Music News
It was wonderful to invite former pupil and superb organist, Thomas McLean, back to Cranmore. Mr McLean delivered a masterclass to selected pupils on our beautiful Mander pipe organ. All the pupils enjoyed the opportunity to play the organ and the session finished with a rendition of a beautiful piece by Bach played by Mr McLean.

Cranmore and St Teresa’s pupils travelled to London on Thursday for a rehearsal with Grange Park Opera. We are delighted that they have this wonderful opportunity to take part in a professional opera production.
Bravo to Year 5 pupil Daniel C for achieving a Distinction for his Grade 2 piano exam.
Year 3 Art Event with St Teresa’s
Year 3 participated in a joint art event with the Year 3 girls at St. Teresa’s this week. They explored the ‘painting with scissors’ technique used by the French artist Matisse. They looked at the composition of his work and then examined how they could reproduce their own version. The results were amazing and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the St. Teresa
World War Two Projects in Year 2
Year 2 have loved sharing their projects which they researched during the Easter holidays. They found a relative or person who inspired them and found out about how they helped during World War Two. The children have loved sharing their posters, books, artefacts and PowerPoints. They have been so interesting, and we have been very impressed with the children’s knowledge and confidence presenting what they had learnt.

Musical Collaboration with St Teresa’s and Other Local Schools
The Year 1 and 2 children performed in a music concert at St Teresa’s with other local schools. They had a lot of fun learning the songs with Mrs Thornton and enjoyed performing.
Year 2’s Blitz Experience in History Lessons
In this week's History lessons, Year 2 have been learning about the Blitz. The pupils acted out what an air raid would have been like by making their classroom as dark as possible and waiting for the 'all clear' siren. We also acted out what it would have felt like to come out of our shelter and see the destruction caused by an air raid.

Reception’s Trip to Forest School
Reception had a fantastic time at Forest School this week. Their session was on the theme of ‘bees’. The sun was shining and we had the best time. The children enjoyed looking at old hives, honeycomb and eating delicious honey toast.

Sport Update
It was great to kick off our cricket season last Saturday with the first rounds of The Surrey Cup. Our U13s played their match on the amazing Henderson fields, whilst the U11s played away at Downsend. In the U13s, the away team won with the scores being: Hall Grove 108-5 (25 overs)/Cranmore 78 (23 overs). Cranmore won the U11s match: Cranmore 110-4 (20 overs)/Downsend 64 (16 overs). Other cricket matches this week have been against schools including Rokeby and Thomas's Battersea, with fixtures taking place tomorrow against Whitgift and Shrewsbury House.
Our U10 tennis squad played in the Surrey league last week and the Surrey festival this week. They beat Hawthorns in the Surrey League with some great tennis played. Other tennis matches have been against schools CLFS, Downsend and RGS Guildford.
We had some great news shared with us regarding sport outside of Cranmore. Congratulations to Year 5 pupil, Josh F who achieved a new PB participating in the Esher 10km. Josh finished 29th in a race mostly with adults and older children participating. It was a determined run by Josh, of which he should feel very proud. Well done, Josh.
Members of our ski squad competed in the National Schools Indoor Championships at Hemel Hempstead a few weeks ago. Year 5 pupil, Rafferty C-D won in the U10 category with other Cranmore pupils, Mathias P and Elijah M, performing exceptionally well. The combined results meant that Cranmore won the Boys Junior Schools competition. These fabulous results bode well for the upcoming IAPS.
