Message from the Headmaster
We had a terrific Teddy Bear’s picnic at the Forest School on Monday with lots of current and new families attending. The nature-based activities included a Teddy Bear Hunt, bubble blowing, messy fun in the mud kitchen, and a picnic around the fire circle during story time.
I had the pleasure of joining parents and pupils at the RLP assembly on Tuesday. It was an excellent performance on the theme of being unique. The pupils demonstrated, and celebrated, our similarities and differences with great enthusiasm. On Thursday, RIH performed their assembly on plants and the joy they can bring to our lives. It was heart warming to see the children present plants which they had diligently grown themselves to their parents. I was proud to see Years 1 and 2 braving the Animazing presentation on Wednesday. Throughout the show, pupils had the opportunity to view, touch and discuss a variety of animals and insects such as owls, snakes, spiders and stick insects. Year 2 continued a busy week dressing up as and learning about evacuees; the costumes were very impressive.
Year 6 enjoyed their trip to Brooklands where they learnt about automotive innovation covering aspects of both the science and history curriculums. They also had the opportunity to put their teamwork and design skills to the test in a workshop using gravity to create energy for their own racing cars made from recycled materials.
It was a busy week for many pupils with the summer assessments taking place in the sports hall and form rooms. Well done to the boys for their diligence and focus and I am delighted they can now relax and enjoy the half-term break.
Congratulations to all the pupils who stretched themselves in the Junior Maths Challenge; many of those involved from Years 7 and 8 earned a bronze, silver or gold certificate. In addition, on Friday a number of other pupils were selected from the online House Quiz challenge to compete in the final at lunchtime with Borelli House crowned the eventual winner.

Animazing Visit to Years 1 and 2
The children in Years 1 and 2 experienced Animazing this week, with a wide range of animals from a barn owl to stick insects. They learnt about what the animals eat and how they live in the wild. The children really enjoyed handling the different animals. It was a wonderful experience!
HOUSE QUIZ COMPETITION
The Upper Prep House Quiz final was won by Borelli in a closely fought competition. They amassed 44 points – just 8 points separated the six teams! It was a good day for Borelli as their Senior team counterparts also won the Senior School House Quiz final, achieving the double at their first attempt. Congratulations to Borelli!
Year 3’s Aztec Pyramids

Studying World War Two in Year 2
Year 2’s Trip to the Rural Life Centre
Year 2 went to the Rural Life Centre to learn about what life was like for children during World War Two. Children took part in a school lesson where they had to write on slate and say their times tables all together. They also learnt about rationing and how families had to use what they already had at home to make new clothes and even toys. A man, who was an evacuee child during the war, spoke to the children about his experience during the war. Everyone loved trying out the Morrison and Anderson shelters. Even lunch time was great fun, when students were able to play on the amazing playground on some 1940s style equipment.
This Week
Congratulations to Bowen House in the Lower Prep and Borelli House in the Upper Prep for gaining the highest number of merits this week.
Reception have really enjoyed the lovely sunny weather this week and have had a great time in their outdoor classroom. We have been exploring cars and ramps as well as playing with bubbles. Long may the glorious weather continue!
Nursery News
The Nursery children had fun in their Bible story session this week. They listened to the story of ‘Jonah and the Whale,’ and then participated in recalling and acting out the story. The session was completed with them making their own whale puppets. Our role play area has been turned into a jungle. The children have been involved with some lovely imaginary role play, dressing up in the various wild animal costumes. In the Red Group we have been focusing on transitions, and the children paid their first visit to Forest School. They enjoyed exploring the site, climbing in trees, looking for mini beasts, swinging in the hammocks and listening to a story at the fire circle whilst enjoying their picnic snack. In Pre-Nursery they enjoyed a small group number-matching activity and developed their fine motor skills by threading Cheerios onto rainbow sticks.
Ms Luke, Head of Nursery
Well done to Niko R in 3CS for serenading the Lower Prep pupils on the piano in Monday’s assembly. It was a very confident performance. Congratulations!
Congratulations to this fine young trumpet player, Jasper H (5MP) who played a Grade 4 piece, ‘Bragtime’ by Frith, in the Upper Prep assembly. Cranmore is always looking for more players of all orchestral instruments and, in particular, brass instruments. Boys can choose to start lessons on the trumpet, French horn, trombone or euphonium. If your child would like to start a brass instrument or indeed, any other instrument, please do ask them to approach me.

Rowing - Walton and Weybridge Regatta
Cranmore's rowers successfully competed at the Walton and Weybridge Regatta over the weekend. It was a great experience, with fourteen boys from Years 8 and 9 racing in the quadruple and double scull events. Learning to row on the water can be tricky; therefore, those who were selected had to demonstrate their competence as oarsmen in order to participate in the race.
The boys really rose to the occasion, as this was Cranmore's first regatta in three years. They displayed plenty of new skills throughout the day, from carefully manoeuvring onto a stake boat for the start, to maintaining a straight course within the buoyed lanes to race successfully. Furthermore, during the afternoon, the racers had to contend with a brisk headwind, which, combined with the opposing direction of the stream, created unfavourable conditions. Nevertheless, the boys competed fiercely, enjoyed the day immensely, and gained valuable racing experience.
We look forward to seeing the boys compete again next half term as they continue to improve and grow stronger.

Thought for the week:
How will you proclaim the greatness of the Lord?
The Magnificat
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.
REFLECTION
Celebrated on May 31, the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the Virgin Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth. The meeting of these two women was a joyful and unique event. Both found themselves pregnant in unusual circumstances - Elizabeth in her old age and Mary by the Holy Spirit. At their meeting, John the Baptist leaped in the womb of Elizabeth, and she blessed Mary and the Christ Child. Mary, in turn, responds with the famous Magnificat praising the Lord.
Let us Pray:
Our Father
Hail Mary
1 minute silence
“This is the secret of every Christian: God is in our midst as a powerful saviour. Our certainty of this enables us, like Mary, to sing and exult with joy.”
Pope Francis
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
