Message from the Head of Prep

There have been a number of exciting activities going on this week with Year 3 enjoying their Viking Day on Monday while Year 2 had their Evacuee Day. Well done to the parents for producing such authentic costumes for the children. Praise must also go to those parents who were involved in the Lower Prep Music Assembly. It was wonderful to see some really lively audience participation on a Tuesday morning and it was clear the children were delighted to see everyone ‘go bananas’ in song and dance!

Wednesday’s swimming gala was a great opportunity for our swim squad to turn all of those hours of practice into some impressive performances and they were rewarded with a resounding triumph. After the downpours the day before, it was with some trepidation that Year 2 set off for their visit to the Rural Life Centre on Thursday. Thankfully, the weather was kind and everyone had a great day exploring the historic buildings and learning about how people used to live during the Second World War.

For our Year 10 pupils, it has been a very busy week of examinations from Monday to Friday. Thank you to everyone for your consideration of them during pick-up times. Those pupils who are in Years 4 to 6 also sat assessments this week and can now look forward to some well-earned time off to rest and recuperate over the half-term break.

After half-term there is much to look forward to including events to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, our celebration of Values Week across the whole school, and Activity Weeks for Year 4 and above.

Year 3 Viking Day

On Monday the Year 3 pupils were treated to a fabulous Viking workshop. They learnt more about why the Vikings travelled great distances on their long ships. Year 3 pitted their wits against their classmates by playing a Viking board game and also had the opportunity to handle real Viking artefacts such as furs and household items made from bone or deer antlers.

In the afternoon, Year 3 learnt more about Viking warfare and were able to examine authentic weapons and armour. Then they practised their Viking war charge. The day ended with some exciting spear wrestling and the retelling of a famous Viking saga. What a memorable day!

Year 3 Viking Day

Year 2 had a wonderful immersive day as Evacuees! They all arrived in school with their gas masks, a small suitcase, name tags, ration books and identity cards.

Year 2 Evacuee Day

All a little lost and confused, the evacuees were lined up outside by the fence and put into groups. We introduced ourselves and looked at the rationed food we had and decided to make bread that we could share.

The children learnt dances and sang wartime songs. They played traditional games such as marbles, skittles, spinning tops, yoyos, pick up sticks, noughts and crosses and jacks. We found old material and decided to 'make do and mend' and made bunting.

Year 2 Evacuee Day

At the end of the day we celebrated with eating the bread we had made with Spam and tinned fruit. The children shared out what they had evenly with their knowledge of fractions and we talked about how grateful we felt, ending the day with a song and dance. It was a memorable day!

Year 2 Trip to the Rural Life Centre

Year 2 had an amazing trip to the Rural Life Living Museum in Farnham on Thursday, where they had a taste of what school was like during the Second World War.

They were fortunate to watch a blacksmith and a wood turner in action, showcasing their crafts.

A standout moment was entering a Morrison shelter, which gave students a powerful sense of what it was like to stay inside for extended periods during the war.

Reception News

Reception had a fantastic time at Forest School this week. We started with a group obstacle course through the woods which was rather tricky. Then we explored some new residents at Forest School caterpillars! Everyone had so much fun in the beautiful sunshine.

Prep Music Assembly

Cranmore Singers, led by Mrs Thornton and Mrs Carpenter, sang two lovely songs this morning in the Prep music assembly, 'Robin in the Tree sings Reggae', and 'Sunflowers'. They were both sung enthusiastically, with lots of energy and confidence. The choir then encouraged the audience to participate in a fun vocal warm-up called 'Peel Banana', the parents did an amazing job in joining in with the song and the actions!

We were then lucky enough to watch some solo performances by Harry M in Year 5 on flute, Jason S in Year 5 on piano, Oscar W in Year 3 on recorder, Rory in Year 3 on piano, and Harriet W and Sophia R (both in Year 2) on violin. They all played with conviction, confidence and musicality. We certainly have a lot of musical talent in the Prep School! Well done to everyone involved it was an uplifting start to the day.

This Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations to Stokes House who gained the highest number of merits in both the Lower Prep and the Upper Prep this week!

As part of their work on La Météo, Year 4 pupils have enjoyed preparing and presenting their own weather forecasts in their French lessons.

The focus for the Nursery has been Space and the children participated in a ‘Big Art’ session decorating the various planets in our solar system. At Forest School, they took part in an obstacle course crawling, jumping and balancing. In Pre-Nursery the children have loved our dinosaur theme and even participated in a dinosaur number hunt in our garden.

Mrs Spooner Year 4 French Nursery News

It has been a week of cricket matches, tennis fixtures, a swimming gala, an athletics meet and a golf match. On Saturday, the Cranmore athletics team made up of pupils from Year 3 to Year 5 competed at the Downsend athletics meet. All the pupils did so well which resulted in wins for the following teams: U8As, U9As and U10Bs. The U11A cricket team had a thrilling win against Shrewsbury House on Saturday morning. On Wednesday, Cranmore hosted a swimming gala for U8s through to U13s against Kings House, which resulted in a Cranmore win. Our U9s had a block cricket fixture against St George's yesterday. Finally, yesterday, our U10s had some great tennis matches against RGS Prep.

Golf

Sport Update

On Monday, our U13 golf team played our second home match of the season, at the Cranmore Golf Course on the Henderson, Crangusta. Six boys from Years 6, 7 and 8 represented the team in a closely contested match against Broomwood school on our very own, 6-hole course. Cranmore had some fantastic individual performances and won the match by 12 shots.

If you are in Years 6, 7 or 8 and are interested in representing the U13 Golf team, please speak with Head of Golf, Mr. Cox. Playing in the matches is a fantastic way to learn more about the game and experience playing in a competitive but enjoyable environment.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Pentecost

Reflection

Amen

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

Reflection

"The Trinity is the basis of the gospel, and the gospel is a declaration of the Trinity in action."

This week we focus on the Most Holy Trinity. The belief in the Trinity is a theological mystery that can be hard to understand. Spend a few moments looking on this famous Icon by Andrei Rublev who completed it in the latter part of the 15th Century. Perhaps as we study this icon we can feel the love that God has for us, that we too are invited to sit at the same table.

Prayer

The Father is my hope. The Son is my refuge. The Holy Spirit is my protector. Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, now and forever.
