20 NOVEMBER 3 JULY 2023 2023 Message from the Head of Prep We are halfway through this half term and, although the mercury is dropping and the nights are drawing in, the days are still busy with a huge amount happening both in and out of school. Mrs Watkinson has launched the new Upper Prep Reading Challenge so those looking for some inspiration for their Christmas holiday reading have some excellent suggestions to tackle. It is great to see the Eco Council raising awareness around healthy eating. On Monday we had a record number of visitors from local schools to Cranmore to take our 11+ and 13+ assessments. Those looking to join our school in September were interviewed before sitting their exams in the hall and having lunch. Later in the week some of the pupils returned to join our current Year 6 pupils for scholarship assessments in Art, Drama, Music and Sport. Well done to all of those involved with Wednesday’s swimming gala against ACS Cobham and congratulations on the win. Thursday saw our Year 2 girls enjoy some time at Manor House. We were treated to a beautiful Lower Prep Music Assembly in the Auditorium yesterday and all of Prep were very excited this morning to hear more about the Cranmore Ski Club and the achievements of its members. Our Cross Country squad went out today to represent us at the St Edmund’s race which included our U8 team getting a chance to represent our school and emulate the success of our Senior teams. We wish our U11 football team well this weekend as they compete in the IAPS Finals – a fantastic achievement just to reach this stage. Good luck! Finally, with winter around the corner, please remember those Cranmore coats and hats.

Mr Heaver

Upper Prep Fairtrade Chocolate Sale Last week, members of the Eco Council and Upper Prep School Council held a Fairtrade chocolate sale. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their mid-morning chocolate treat! The money raised will be donated to CAFOD.

Italian Club In Italian Club, boys have not only been learning some basic phrases, numbers to 100 and how to order a pizza with a choice of toppings (pineapple strictly forbidden!), but have also enjoyed learning traditional Italian card games using Neapolitan playing cards. Bravi ragazzi! Mr Lamport

Upper Prep Reading Challenge The Upper Prep Reading Challenge has been launched and is proving extremely popular amongst pupils from Years 4 to 6. Pupils are invited to read all five of the books by May 2024 and will receive a bronze certificate for reading three books, a silver certificate for four books and a gold certificate for five books. They will also receive five merits for each book they read in the challenge! The pupils who have read all five books by May will be asked to vote for their favourite book and invited to take part in a special celebration where the winning book will be announced. If you would like more details about the challenge, please email me at sian.watkinson@cranmore.org.

Anti-Bullying Week: Odd Socks Day The whole school took part in Odd Socks Day last Friday. The theme this year was ‘Make a Noise about Bullying.’ Odd Socks Day helps us to celebrate the fact that we are all different. Year 2 had a wonderful lesson celebrating their differences and talking about what 'bullying' means and acted out different scenarios to determine if they would be categorised as bullying. They went on to talk about how they could help.

Reception made a poster to show who our trusted adults are. We talked about how we could talk to any of these people if we were worried about a friendship or had seen someone being unkind to someone else. Reception made some very thoughtful contributions to our class discussion and we are very proud of their mature approach to this topic. Well done, Reception!

Year 2 China Topic

Year 2 really enjoyed looking at the similarities and differences between China and England. They compared their culture, school and food.

We ended the session with Chinese food tasting kindly prepared by Gary in the kitchen. We tried stir fried pepper rice noodles, duck and vegetable spring rolls and prawn crackers.

Eco Council News

One of the big topics the Eco Council is working on at Cranmore this year is healthy eating. We are particularly interested in the enjoyment of more plant-based meals so this week one of our Eco team would like to share a favourite vegetarian recipe for you to try at home.

Nursery News This week at Forest School the children learnt all about a compost wormery. They used their fine motor skills to crumble the special soil, ripped some cardboard and added tissue paper and newspaper before putting the worms inside their new home. The session finished with them making their own snowflake wraps which Ellie cooked on the fire and the children enjoyed them for their tasty snack. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

This Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations to Radford House in the Lower Prep and Borelli House in the Upper Prep for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

Sport Update Prep Sport Years 3 to 6 had a great swimming gala against ACS Cobham on Wednesday. After 27 races including both individuals and relays, Cranmore were the overall winners. Rugby matches have taken place against Feltonfleet, Cranleigh, Edgeborough and St Paul's.

Senior Sport On Wednesday, the Cranmore U15 Football team travelled to Ryde school on the Isle of White for the latest round of the ISFA National Cup. Cranmore won 2-0 with goals from Adam H and James O. They have now progressed onto the Quarter-Final stages. Five of our senior swimmers have successfully qualified to represent London South at the ISA Swimming National Finals to be held at the London Aquatic Centre next Friday 1st December. This is an amazing achievement and a first for Cranmore. The swimmers involved are Jensen W, Jake B, Daniel B, Freddie R and Henry C.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Using Our Talents "Because God has made us for Himself, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him." Saint Augustine

Chaplaincy News

Tutor groups have been visiting the school chapel to spend time in prayer and silence. It is a wonderful way to start the day, offering it up to God and asking for His help. Pupils have also enjoyed reading and leading others in prayer. Adoration continues to take place every Wednesday from 8am-8.25am in the School Chapel. On Thursday 30th November we have our St Andrew’s Day Mass at 11.15am in the Auditorium. Do come along if you can.

Reflection

This week we focused on using our talents. “Each of us is willed by God and God has given each of us a definite purpose that he has not given to any other”. These are the words of St John Henry Newman. What wonderful news this is. We all have purpose and are loved by God.

Prayer

Lord, help us to be wise and faithful servants. May we use whatever we have for good, so that we may help others. May we return all that you have given us to you - all for the greater glory of the Father, so that we might hear these words some day with our own ears: “Well done, good and faithful servant, ... come and join in your master’s happiness.”

Adoration Every Wednesday

8am to 8.25am

This is an invitation to come to the chapel to be in Jesus’ presence on Wednesday morning from 8am to 8.25am Parents are asked to meet us in Reception at 7.55am

Stay for as long or as little as you need This is a time of silent prayer

When we face the sun we get a tan… but when we stand before Jesus in the Eucharist we become saints. Blessed Carlo Acutis
