22 JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 Message from the Head of Prep
The school has been alive with learning this week, in and out of the classroom. Our EYFS team have been introducing the children to Chinese New Year while pupils in Year 1 have been looking at tessellation. Years 2 and 3 have been exploring the wonders of nature at our Forest School site and Year 3 pupils have also been enjoying the delights of Mrs Millar’s flute playing in the Music Department.
The Science labs have been busy with Year 4 tackling various aspects of practical work and it has been lovely to recognise the achievements of a number of children in Year 5 for their French studies with Linguist Awards. Year 6 took time to reflect upon St Maximilian Kolbe, thinking about his dedication and self-sacrifice. They enjoyed their time with the author Fiorella De Maria, who has published a book about the life of this saint.
Storm Isha brought strong winds followed soon after by Storm Jocelyn, but thankfully our recent sporting fixtures have been able to go ahead. We enjoyed success at the Shrewsbury House tournament and have had matches against a number of local schools this week. Praise must go to our Under 9 and Under 11 teams who were undefeated. Thursday saw us host a very exciting swimming gala and today our Under 10 teams have been in action against Milbourne Lodge and Rokeby. We wish the best of luck to all those involved in the Murray Cup rugby this weekend.
Mr Heaver
Year 6 Author Visit by Fiorella de Maria On Friday morning, the Year 6 pupils had an inspiring author visit by Fiorella De Maria who taught them about the life and works of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish weaver’s son who grew up to be a priest, a missionary and a martyr. His sole goal was to share the love of God with as many people as possible. The Year 6 pupils were encouraged to think about the virtues required to become a saint and left feeling challenged and inspired by the life of this saint, whom they have been studying in class. Mr Jakubowski

Year 4 Science Are Cranmore jumpers Good Insulators?
Where does this Fluffy dog live? That was the question posed to Year 4 pupils in their Science lessons this week, before we discussed how his thick coat kept him warm by trapping air molecules to prevent heat loss. Year 4 then set out to find out if a Cranmore jumper made a better thermal insulator than a piece of foam. We used digital temperature probes to record data and set up control experiments, with no insulation, against which to compare the results. Cranmore jumpers did indeed reduce heat loss, when used to insulate a beaker of water, although the data generally indicated that foam was the better insulator, but definitely not as comfortable!

Year 3 at Forest School Year 3 had a wonderful afternoon at Forest School on Thursday. We explored Forest School and participated in a range of activities including sawing. Miss Freeman and Mrs Sinclair
Year 2 at Forest School The Lower Prep at Cranmore were treated to another amazing production by the Pied Piper Theatre company this Year 2 had a magical afternoon, wrapped up warm. They loved the ice at Forest School and enjoyed exploring all week. 'Can Bears Ski?' is based on the book by poet Raymond Antrobus, who draws on his own experience as a the wonders of nature. We warmed up with hot chocolate and a biscuit and shared a story all about the things deaf child in a hearing world. This year, the company were joined by actors from Deafinitely Theatre. The story we love about winter. was told through a mixture of sign language, speaking, singing and puppetry as we followed Little Bear on his journey from being unable to hear, to learning to lip read, to getting his first set of hearing aids. In a gentle, child apMrs Carpenter and Mrs Stefano propriate way, the story posed the challenges with being unable to hear and also hearing for the first time. The children and staff were all captivated and it was a wonderful celebration of diversity and inclusion.
EYFS Chinese New Year Celebrations Nursery and Reception have enjoyed an introduction to Chinese New Year by decorating dragon-shaped biscuits together. The children enjoyed spreading the red icing and pinching the sprinkles and of course, eating them all up! In Reception, the children also enjoyed watching dragon dancing, writing Chinese numbers in glitter and making handprint dragons.
Mrs Prothero, Head of EYFS

Nursery News This week the Nursery and Pre-Nursery have been enjoying ‘Number Week’. The Pre-Nursery children used mixed media to decorate the numeral of their choice and went on a walk finding all the hidden numbers. In their Music session they had fun learning songs focusing on numbers and incorporating lots of actions. The Nursery children made their own number block pictures for our number display board and had fun developing their ICT skills using the interactive whiteboard to practise writing their numbers. They used the whiteboards to write numbers too! The children also enjoyed sensory play in the water tray with cocoa powder, jugs, cups and spoons – making their own hot chocolate. Reflection
This week we learn from our readings that God calls all of us to follow Him. The top 10 Instagram accounts with the most followers are Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Selena Gomez—all wonderfully talented people. Perhaps we may wonder how many followers Jesus would have if He opened an account or if we have the same talents in us? Yet Jesus met people one by one and called them by name. He calls each of us by name to follow Him; we are called to become Fishers of Men as we all have something to offer. Prayer
We pray for all those who find themselves homeless at this time. We pray for those who are affected by the rising cost of heating their homes. We pray for all those who are ill or unwell. St Andrew …Pray for us. St Maximilian Kolbe ….Pray for us. Amen
