Message from the Head of Prep

With extra-curricular clubs, music groups, workshops and sporting fixtures all in full swing, it has been lovely to feel the buzz around the school, especially with the warm weather we have been enjoying.

This week, we celebrated European Day of Languages with a variety of activities in lessons and at break times. Thank you to Year 2 for their beautiful flags.

Year 3 enjoyed an incredible Stone Age Extravaganza and Mrs Spooner shared information about the forthcoming School Council elections with pupils in Year 4 and above.

Our new House Captains in Year 6 have been proudly wearing their badges and congratulations must go to Borelli for doing the double this week: lifting both the Upper Prep and Senior House Cups.

Looking ahead to next week, we are very fortunate to be welcoming the poet Laura Mucha as part of National Poetry Day. Laura will be leading a workshop that will be broadcast from Cranmore to over 100 schools across the country.

Stone Age Workshops for Year 3

Cranmore and St Teresa’s were treated to a very exciting joint event last Friday. They participated in a Stone Age experience workshop at the St Teresa’s site. They met some Stone Age people and were welcomed into their yurt to learn more about how the Stone age people lived. They learnt about the three stages of the Stone Age and the differences between them. They got to touch furs and tools used by Stone Age people and were even able to eat some Stone Age food. The afternoon was spent at the St Teresa’s Forest School site where the children collected suitable firewood, made shelters, lit a fire using a flint and steel, and toasted marshmallows. It was an amazing experience and the children acquired a great deal of knowledge about the Stone Age.

Mrs Hull gave an inspirational performance on the violin to our Year 3 musicians this week. We would love for more pupils to take up the violin. Please contact the Music Department if your child is interesting in having lessons.

Year 3 investigated friction on Wednesday and tested which surfaces cause the most friction or the least. They had great fun carrying out their experiments.

European Day of Languages

Year 2 loved celebrating European Day of Languages! They listened to different greetings in many European languages and made a flag from a country in Europe.

School Council Elections

Upper Prep pupils are invited to stand for election to this year’s School Council. Pupils who are interested in this role should prepare a speech to give to their class explaining the reasons why they would make a good School Council representative. (Pupils may wish to include a PowerPoint, but this is not essential). Elections will be held in Form time from next week. Good luck to all the pupils who stand for nomination.

Reception News

Reception started their week off with a fantastic Forest School session. The children collected conkers on the way over to Forest School and then made ‘incy wincy spiders’ out of them. After lots of playing the children enjoyed a warm cup of hot chocolate and a crumpet that Ellie had toasted on the open fire. It was a brilliant Forest School session and everyone had a lot of fun!

Lower Prep School Council

Our new council were very excited to meet this morning to discuss some of the ways they think we could improve things at school. They wrote down all the ideas we discussed to then feed back to their classes. Our members for this term are: Alice, Akaash, Zara, Alex, Teddy, Harriet, Wilfred and Beau.

Last week, across the trust, we celebrated Safer Internet Week. The Lower Prep School had an assembly based around games on electronic devices. As part of this assembly, the children were read a story to help reflect on their usage of devices and security surrounding avatars, usernames and passwords. Each class competed in a competition to make a poster that showed they could create an avatar, username and password that were safe and protected their identity. I am happy to announce that the following children were selected as winners for their class:

Joseph A

Alice SLT

Areton P

Brooke C

Harriet W

Patrick McG

Beau D

Jack B

Congratulations to the winners and all our entrants in the Lower Prep School.

Nursery News

We have moved on to our new topic focusing on the new season, Autumn. The children enjoyed developing their fine motor skills using knives to chop up the seasonal vegetables for their ‘cooking pot.’ At Forest school the children enjoyed collecting conkers, looking for mini beasts and toasting crumpets on the fire. The Science session focused on how and why we have to look after our teeth. The children had fun using toothpaste and a brush to practise their brushing skills!

Fantastic U8s and U10s Football Tournament

We hosted our annual U8 and U10 Cranmore Football Tournaments last Saturday and it was huge success. Both our U8 and U10 teams made it through to the semi-finals. The glorious morning involved 16 teams and around 300 people were in attendance. Year group football matches were played throughout the week against Rokeby, Feltonfleet, Kings College Wimbledon, Cranleigh and Surbiton Prep.

Our U15 Football 1st XI are through to the next round of the ISFA Cup. The team won 4 -1 away at Box Hill and now face Winchester College in the next round. Years 7 and 8 had a block fixture against Downsend. The U14 1st XV beat Dunottar 35 - 5 in the National Cup with an impressive display on Saturday. The team now face Trinity school in the next round. The U15 1st XV had a great match against Reigate Grammar on Thursday which provided great preparation for their first-round match in the National Cup versus Gordons School.

Sport Update

Our U15 and U13 swim squads competed in the ESSA Secondary School Relays at the Guildford Spectrum on Saturday evening. We are awaiting confirmation for National Qualification.

House Cup Winners

Congratulations to Tylor House in the Lower Prep and Borelli House in the Upper Prep who gained the highest number of merits this week!

"Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed. Each of us is loved. Each of us is necessary."

Bible Reading

Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving; for my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways not your ways – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, the heavens are as high above earth as my ways are above your ways, my thoughts above your thoughts.

From the Book of Isaiah

Reflection

This week we focus on the theme of Resilience.

We know there are times when not everything goes to plan. We forget the books we need, we fall out with a friend. Things do go wrong. We may not understand how God can be in those moments. Yet we must have FAITH in Jesus as He has promised to be with us. St Therese of Avila put it this way: "Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, Though all things pass, God does not change. Patience wins all things. But he lacks nothing who possesses God; For God alone suffices.”

Prayer

Lord, teach me to be generous: to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek to rest; to labour and to ask for no reward.
