Message from the Headmaster
I would like to congratulate all pupils who were involved in our very popular and successful Open Morning last weekend; we had another record number of families visiting our school. The overriding feedback was how impressed they were with the wonderful Senior School pupils who led tours throughout the morning and how well resourced the school was in terms of facilities and experienced staff. My gratitude to the parents, pupils and staff for displaying Cranmore at its very best. All pupils, from our youngest in Pre Nursery through to the Senior School, were particularly impressive in how they presented themselves during the whole school photo on Thursday. I look forward to sharing the photo with you all in due course.
Our Prep School assembly recognised a number of pupils for their scholarly approach to the Summer Reading Challenge as they were tasked to read a book from the seven decades of our late Queen’s reign. We also welcomed an inspiring presentation highlighting the importance of the School Council, pupils were encouraged to put themselves forward as school council representatives by writing a speech to be shared with their peers.
Congratulations to the U8 pupils who emphatically won the Cranmore invitational football festival on Saturday morning and to our U10 team who played superbly by making the final of their tournament. In addition, our impressive U11 team qualified for the IAPS national football finals in November.
On Monday, pupils from across the school took part in activities as part of the European Day of Languages. There were quizzes, a photo booth, films, pizza competitions, presentations and of course, pupils enjoyed the eagerly anticipated themed lunch.
On Thursday morning, Senior pupils were put through their paces by England and Harlequins scrum half Danny Care. It was an ideal opportunity for budding scrum halves to learn key skills from the experienced international. I would like to thank Danny for taking the time to help inspire the pupils.
26 SEPTEMBER 2022
European Day of Languages
Students across all year groups celebrated the European Day of Languages on Monday 26th September. We had a day full of different activities to discover more about Europe. The students completed a quiz during form time to learn more about Europe. At break time, students came to the European Photo Booth where they enjoyed posing in front of European destinations for photos with their friends. They enjoyed visiting Paris, Barcelona, Dublin and the Alps on their very brief travels. I hope they enjoyed the experience. We have to say a huge thank you to the canteen for putting on a range of delicious dishes such as pizza, chicken chorizo and for dessert, students devoured the crepes.
We had over 50 entries across all year groups for the Pizza Flag competition. This is the first time we offered this competition and the entries represented all flags across the globe, they were truly creative and not only pizza but fruit tarts too. Can you guess the flag for each pizza?
Well done to everyone for their participation and for making it a great experience.
Year 4 Explore Circuits and Static in Science
Year 4 Scientists started the term investigating electricity in their Science lessons. They enjoyed seeing the Van der Graff generator in action, helping them understand what Static Electricity is and the type of materials that conduct electricity. They are currently learning about circuit components, and loving the hands on experience of finding out how to connect them to make circuits work.

Nursery News
The Nursery children had a great time at Forest School this week, collecting conkers and searching for mini beasts with their magnifying glasses. They have also enjoyed creating autumn leaf pictures using mixed media. We grew carrots in our Nursery garden and they were finally ready for picking with the children. In Pre Nursery the children participated in a cutting activity with the carrots to develop their scissor skills. They also enjoyed an autumn walk around the school grounds, looking for the signs of the season in their environment and collecting autumn treasures to use in the afternoon craft session.
Ms Luke, Head of Nursery
This week in Maths, Reception have been learning all about repeating patterns. They enjoyed creating their own repeating patterns with paint and sponges.
We were treated to a delightful musical performance by Daniel in Assembly on Monday who played the santoor.
Daniel told us, “The santoor originated in Iran but there are also Indian and Chinese versions of it. You use very thin sticks which are called mezrabs to hit the strings. There are seventy two strings in total and twenty seven different notes. I played a piece called ‘Chahar Mezrabe Bayate Tork’, which translates to ‘Sonata in B flat’.”
Library News
On Tuesday next week we are delighted to be welcoming author David Farr to Cranmore to present to our Year 5 and 6 pupils. Parents were given the opportunity to pre order a copy of his book, The Book of Stolen Dreams, for him to sign on the day.
Although the deadline for orders has passed, I have ordered a number of spare copies, so do let me know if your child would like one: sian.watkinson@cranmore.org
The Book of Stolen Dreams is a gripping fantasy adventure for readers aged 9+. The story was inspired by the author’s German Jewish great aunt and great uncle who each made courageous journeys as unaccompanied children, escaping Düsseldorf, Germany, in the 1930’s for London. David is arguably best known for his multi award winning screen adaptation of John le Carré’s The Night Manager which attracted 9.9 million viewers and his former role as Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sports Roundup
This week we surpassed 120 football matches being played since the start of term. Our U8s had their first year group fixture against Downsend last Friday, which included 4 wins and a draw. The U8A team featured in our very own tournament the next day. Cranmore had an impressive run to the final with results including 7 0 vs Danes Hill, 6 0 vs RGS Prep, 4 0 vs KCJS and 4 0 vs Downsend in the semi final. Cranmore went on to win the Final 2 0 against Parkside. The U10s had an equally impressive run, unfortunately coming up short in the final. Our U9s had some excellent matches against Hoe Bridge and Feltonfleet this week, with our U11s playing a whole year group fixture against Kings College Wimbledon.
The U11A team featured in the IAPS qualifiers on Monday in which they came 3rd. This result means they qualify for the next stage of the competition.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Thought for the week:
How do you allow God to work though your life?
St. Thérèse
Pray for me that I, like you, may have great and innocent confidence in the loving promises of our God. Pray that I may live my life in union with God’s plan for me, and one day see the Face of God whom you loved so deeply.
St. Thérèse, you were faithful to God even unto the moment of your death. Pray for me that I may be faithful to our loving God. May my life bring peace and love to the world through faithful endurance in love for God our saviour.
Amen.
REFLECTION
Pope Francis has spoken on several occasions of his strong devotion to St. Thérèse of Lisieux the Little Flower. She had a simple yet powerful message that still resonates in the hearts of millions today. Her “Little Way” of allowing God to work through her life has become a guiding light for the faithful.
Let us Pray:
Our Father
Hail Mary
1 minute silence
“
Do not be afraid to depend solely on the tenderness of God as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux did.”
Pope Francis
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Notices
All pupils in the Upper Prep and Senior department are invited to stand for election to this year’s Cranmore School Council. Pupils who are interested in this role should prepare a speech to give to their class explaining the reasons why they would make a good school council member (Pupils may wish to include a PowerPoint, but this is not essential). Elections will be held in Form time w/c 10 October. Good luck to all the pupils who stand for nomination.
