829JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 JANUARY 2024 Message from the Headmaster

I was enormously impressed with the attitude and performance of our pupils on Saturday morning at Rokeby. A combination of talent, commitment and tactical awareness was clearly evident as the pupils successfully retained the Murray Cup rugby trophy. Simultaneously, our Senior swim team took part in the English Schools competition in Guildford. There were some outstanding performances and results, with several notable places and one of our Year 8 swimmers winning a gold medal in the 100m Freestyle.

The pupils from Years 9 and 10 enjoyed a visit to St Teresa’s last week for the Escape Room event. Both sets of students enjoyed the challenge and the opportunity to socialise. Thank you to FOST, the CPA and the staff for contributing to this successful event.

Following the GCSE Options evening last term and assessments, parents’ evenings and mentor meetings with Senior School teaching staff this term, our Year 9 pupils can now focus on submitting their GCSE option choices. This is an exciting next step in their educational journey at Cranmore.

Mr Everitt

Escape Room Event for Years 9 and 10 On Friday evening last week, students from Years 9 and 10 joined their peers at St Teresa’s for an enjoyable evening of escape room fun. It was a great opportunity to socialise and have fun solving the puzzles. Thank you to the CPA and the FOST for organising it.

Art News Pupils in Year 8 have started looking at snack-time treats as part of their Art project this year, inspired by the realistic paintings of Joel Penkman. They have developed skills in digital illustration and are learning to use Photopea.com to enhance and colour their line drawings of iconic biscuits in order to generate a more contemporary outcome. Mrs Sanders, Head of Art

Mentor Sessions This term, members of the Senior Leadership Team, Heads of Year and Tutors have been conducting mentor sessions with pupils from Years 7, 9 and 10. This has provided a great opportunity for guidance regarding GCSE options choices for Year 9, as well as a chance to see how new Senior and GCSE pupils are progressing – the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!

Wicked Writers Competition In 2023, the National Literacy Trust recorded that one in seven young writers are ‘social writers’ as they either write to support causes and issues they care about or because it makes them feel connected to the world. In addition, their latest research shows that giving children and young people the opportunity to get inspired to write through literacy events can positively influence their writing enjoyment and frequency. The National Literacy Trust has teamed up with the stage musical Wicked and its acclaimed Wicked Active Learning cultural and social education programme to run an exciting social action writing competition encouraging school pupils to write about a positive environmental change they want to see. Wicked Writers: Be the Change asks 9 to 14 year-olds to harness the power of persuasive writing to think about any environmental issue they feel passionately about.

All Upper Prep and Senior pupils are invited to take part in the Wicked Writers Competition which the National Literacy Trust is running. I will be running drop-in sessions on Friday lunch times (13:15 to 13:45) starting on Friday 9th February for pupils to work on their submissions which will be based on environmental issues close to their hearts.

All shortlisted young writers will be published in the Wicked Writers Anthology and receive free copies of the publication. Prizes include: •

Free class tickets to see Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London

Author visits from MG Leonard and

Curated book bundles.

The deadline for entries will be 11th March 2024 and the winners will be announced on Earth Day, 22th April 2024. If your child is interested, they should speak to me in the Senior Library.

On Tuesday, our U15s football team played in the quarter-final of the National Bowl Cup at Horsley FC. Bryanston proved very worthy opponents. It was 0-0 at half-time but a well worked team goal and an excellent free-kick meant Cranmore won the match 20. The semi-final will take place next month against Stephen Perse school from Cambridge.
