Message from the Headmaster

Our Senior School Council enjoyed their visit to the Houses of Parliament at the beginning of the week. It was followed by Year 9 pupils taking part in a public speaking competition with Manor House and St Teresa's. On Thursday, Year 10 GCSE Art pupils benefitted from a trip to the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden, heralded as one of the first of its kind in the UK.

This morning, our guest speaker, Chris Lubbe, gave an inspirational talk to our Senior School. Drawing on his incredible story, from growing up in South Africa to featuring as personal bodyguard to Nelson Mandela, Chris took the pupils on a journey of discovery with themes of determination, courage, love and forgiveness.

School Council Trip to Parliament

Last year's School Council reps and members of Politics club enjoyed a fascinating trip to Parliament this week. We toured the Victoria tower, the House of Lords, Central Lobby, the House of Commons and Westminster Hall. The pupils gained a fantastic insight into how laws are created, and they also took part in a workshop to understand the petition

Public Speaking Competition

Two teams of our Year 9 pupils enjoyed competing in a friendly Public Speaking Competition with their counterparts from St Teresa's and Manor House on Wednesday 2nd October. The event was hosted by St Teresa's and held in the library in a convivial atmosphere where a range of subjects were debated, from the relevance of handwriting to the role of electric cars. The standard of public speaking was high and the event was won with an outstanding performance by Manor House. Well done to the boys who participated so well and who had spent the last few weeks preparing assiduously for this event.

Year

The Year 10 GCSE Art class visited the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden this week to draw, photograph and enjoy the peaceful garden filled with sculptures all of which drew inspiration from the environment they are in. This visit forms the starting point of their initial project on natural structures and should inspire the students to consider making art that stretches beyond the limitations of a sketchbook page.

Pythagoras’ Theorem

and Trigonometry

In Mathematics, our pupils have been learning about Pythagoras' Theorem and Trigonometry in fun and varied ways. Some of our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a Pythagoras treasure hunt (congratulations to Damir and Oscar for winning!). Some of our Year 9 pupils succeeded in measuring the height of the Science and Technology building using Trigonometry and angles of elevation.

The Art Club students took our brand new Gelli plates for a spin. It is an exciting technique that requires layers of acrylic paint upon a square of jelly-like medium, dried to just the right consistency. We pressed natural objects which we had found into the surface and played with colour to achieve some often surprising results. The

Congratulations to our U13 Football 1st XI who are through to the next round of the Surrey Cup, after beating Parkside 4-3. The U13s also had some great match against Danes Hill on Wednesday. Please check the Sports Portal for results.

There were two draws for our U14s and U16s rugby teams against St John's and London Oratory respectively. Our U16s also had a National Cup match against St John's on Wednesday. The U15s are playing against Richard Challoner tomorrow.

The U15s football team had a National Cup against Claremont Fan Court yesterday.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

Bible Reading

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians:

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, make you holy, through and through.

Reflection

We have reflected on the lives of the saints and been reminded that our happiness is to be found in Holiness. This week we celebrated the lives of St Teresa of Lisieux and St Francis of Assisi. Two different people living in different places and times but both uniquely close to God. Both shone out with the love of God.

Prayer

Most High, Glorious God, enlighten the darkness of our minds. Give us a right faith, a firm hope and a perfect charity, so that we may always and in all things act according to Your Holy Will. Amen.
