85 JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 FEBRUARY 2024 Message from the Headmaster
We celebrated Mental Health Week with a range of activities including lunchtime runs, assemblies and most importantly, break time hot chocolate! It also coincided with Safer Internet Day with a guest lecture on cybersecurity. In assemblies, we highlighted the importance of a healthy body and healthy mind through talks on nutrition which were supported by our wonderful school catering company, Harrisons. We have many exciting trips and excursions planned over the coming year to enrich our pupils’ education. I am delighted that pupils will have the opportunity to travel abroad to ski in Italy, to hone their language skills in France, or to research tectonic activity and physical landscapes in Sicily. A little closer to home, I am delighted that we have had to charter a second 55ft yacht at the end of the summer term for Mr. Savvides’ sailing adventure to Lymington and Beaulieu due to the popularity of this exciting trip. We are proud of the wide range of extracurricular activities we offer to ensure that our pupils have a well-rounded education both inside and outside of the classroom. Special congratulations to our U15 1st football team who overcame less than ideal weather conditions on Thursday and won a place in the Final of the ISFA National Bowl competition, which is a first in our school’s history. I wish everyone a restful half-term break.
Mr Everitt
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week Senior pupils took part in a range of activities for Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. On Tuesday, there was a ‘Mindful Mile Run’ at lunch time and on Wednesday at morning break, there was a hot chocolate sale. There were puzzles in the library on the theme of wellbeing to complete as well as a display of useful books on this important topic. The Year 10 Mental Health Ambassadors also assisted with the running of the other events throughout the school, such as the Feel Good Karaoke for the Prep School pupils.

Year 8 Design and Technology Pupils in Year 8 have been working on traditional wood-working joints in their DT lessons. They were able to choose from lap joints, finger joints, dowel joints and biscuit joints. After they have been glued, pupils will design a laser-engraved lid based on a design movement of their choice.
Mr McGhee, Head of DT
Esports Update Our Cranmore Champions of the Digital Schoolhouse Esports - Splatoon 3, took part in the UK regional qualifier round at Belong Arena in Sutton.
Six pupils from Year 8, Thomas, Ashton, Daniel, Carlos, Sebastian, and Oliver, competed against other schools, including sixth-form pupils, winning all their matches without dropping a point and reached the final game. After a tense match, they lost in the last three seconds, coming second in their league. Well done for a fantastic effort, boys.
Mr Afana, Head of ICT
Year 9 Research Essay Competition The Aristotelian Award has been set up to promote independent study skills in Year 9 pupils while simultaneously providing an avenue to explore super-curricular interests in the arts, humanities and sciences. The competition is split into two categories – arts/humanities and sciences. Prizes are awarded to winners in both categories of the competition. Those wishing to make a submission should email their essays, as a PDF, to Mr Pulford by Monday 19th February. Please do not submit them yourselves. I look forward to reading your entries after half-term. Mr Pulford, Deputy Head (Academic)
Wicked Writers Competition In 2023, the National Literacy Trust recorded that one in seven young writers are ‘social writers’ as they either write to support causes and issues they care about or because it makes them feel connected to the world. In addition, their latest research shows that giving children and young people the opportunity to get inspired to write through literacy events can positively influence their writing enjoyment and frequency. The National Literacy Trust has teamed up with the stage musical Wicked and its acclaimed Wicked Active Learning cultural and social education programme to run an exciting social action writing competition encouraging school pupils to write about a positive environmental change they want to see. Wicked Writers: Be the Change asks 9 to 14 year-olds to harness the power of persuasive writing to think about any environmental issue they feel passionately about.
All Upper Prep and Senior pupils are invited to take part in the Wicked Writers Competition which the National Literacy Trust is running. I will be running drop-in sessions on Friday lunch times (13:15 to 13:45) starting on Friday 9th February for pupils to work on their submissions which will be based on environmental issues close to their hearts.
All shortlisted young writers will be published in the Wicked Writers Anthology and receive free copies of the publication. Prizes include: •
Free class tickets to see Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London
•
Author visits from MG Leonard and
•
Curated book bundles.
The deadline for entries will be 11th March 2024 and the winners will be announced on Earth Day, 22th April 2024. If your child is interested, they should speak to me in the Senior Library.

Sports News Football On Thursday our U15 1st Football team played Stephen Perse Foundation in the semi-final of the ISFA National Bowl competition. After going 1-0 down early in the first half, the team stuck together and battled hard. With five minutes to go the boys got a deserved equaliser taking the game into extra time. After a tense ten-minute extra time period, the score remained 1-1, meaning a penalty shootout would decide the winner. Cranmore managed to score all five penalties and win the shoot out 5-4, advancing them to the ISFA National Final for the first time in the school's history. Squash This year the Under 15 Squash team entered the National Schools tournament. Sixty schools entered the competition from across the country. In the first stage we were in a tough group featuring Epsom College, Kings College School and Haberdashers Boys. The boys played some fantastic squash to finish second and qualify for the main semi-final group stage. This was held at Eton College, where we faced Eton, Whitgift, Aylesbury and John Hampden Grammar School. Again, the boys performed admirably, notably our Number 1 seed Omar who won three of his four matches. It was a tremendous experience for the boys, particularly as this was an Under 16 tournament.
Rowing
Cranmore's rowing programme competed in their first fixture of the new year last week. Seventeen boys from Years 7 to 10 travelled to Twickenham Rowing Club on Sunday morning. All of the boys raced individually, completing distances dependent on their age, and were assigned mixed teams for a team relay. With all the boys rowing really well, many personal bests were beaten. Twickenham RC were great hosts and all the boys and their parents enjoyed this exciting fixture, which was the first of this kind at Cranmore for many years. We look forward to seeing how the boys progress on the water and await our next opportunity to showcase our skills. Biathlon Congratulations to the seventeen boys from Year 4 through to Year 9 that have successfully qualified for the British Schools National Biathlon event taking place at Bath University in March. This is a great achievement by all involved and good luck to Cranmore for the finals. Well done to Titus G, Fabian H, Matthew B and William R from Year 4; Arlo W, Rory C and Harry S from Year 5; Charlie S, Noah M and Jax A from Year 6; Henry C, Edward W and Jacob S from Year 7; Daniel B and Freddie R from Year 8; and Theo L and Sam S from Year 9.
In other sport, our U13s had a clean sweep with their rugby matches against Thomas's Battersea on Wednesday; the three U12 teams were undefeated against Downsend; the U15 Hockey team are playing at Lee Valley Park today in an ISFA tournament; and our Senior Cross-Country squad are competing at Duke of Kent.

Reflection This week we hear about how important prayer is. Prayer is the turning of our hearts to God. Sometimes we need words, sometimes silence. Jesus knew how important it was to pray. Spend time in prayer this week. Turn your heart towards God, placing your concerns into His hands. Prayer We pray for all those who find themselves homeless at this time. We pray for those who are affected by the rising cost of heating our homes. We pray for all those who are ill or unwell.
St Andrew …Pray for us. St Maximilian Kolbe ….Pray for us. Amen
