9 SEPTEMBER 2024

Message from the Headmaster

I am delighted to welcome everyone back to Cranmore for the beginning of the new academic year - it has already been a busy start! Over 170 pupils were in attendance for the pre-season training during the initial week of school. Similarly, on Saturday morning, pupils were eager to participate in further preparations during a team training session ahead of the scheduled fixtures.

Our pupils have enjoyed the changes made to the provision of facilities due to the Prep and Senior schools operating on separate timetables for the first time. Year 11 pupils have appreciated the addition of their new study area ahead of sitting their GCSEs next summer. In our first assembly, I was proud to present one of our Senior pupils, Ronan, with the Rochussen Cup for receiving a Distinction in Grade 8 Music Theatre.

This year, our school value is Community. I was impressed by the mature attitude of pupils as they interacted and supported each other throughout this week. On Sunday, our community of teachers from across the Trust took part in the Surrey Half Marathon in support of our local charity, Cherry Trees. I am delighted to share that we have already raised in excess of £1,300 for this very worthy cause. We look forward to welcoming a representative from the charity to Cranmore next week to collect the final donation. Thank you to everyone who took part and to all those who contributed to the fundraising.

On Sunday 8th March a team of 15 Cranmore staff gathered to take part in the Surrey Half Marathon and 5K event to raise money for our local charity Cherry Trees, based in East Horsley. This was a wonderful community event that will have a really positive effect for the charity.

Cherry Trees provides home from home care for children with complex disabilities whilst also providing their parents and family with a meaningful break. Every hour of care provides the family with an often much needed meaningful break. They can recharge, spend quality time with partners and siblings, meet friends, go to work, clean the house or simply relax. Last year, Cherry Trees provided a lifeline to 63 families by providing 1,551 sleepovers and 633 tea or day visits. On top of this core care, they ran five parent and staff wellbeing days, and provided small but vital financial grants through our bursary and welfare funds. These additional services ensure our families receive the physical, emotional and financial support they need.

We are pleased to have raised over £1,300 and we are looking forward to hosting Cherry Trees’ Community and Events Officer at School later this term.

Summer Tall Ships Trip

At the start of the summer break, 20 pupils and 4 teachers embarked on a 4 night adventure on the English Channel with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, living on board two 72ft Challenger Yachts for the duration of the trip. The pupils were responsible for all aspects of sailing the vessel and living on board, including helming, hoisting sails, optimising the performance of the yacht, cooking, cleaning and working together as a crew. They worked incredibly well as a team and successfully sailed to Weymouth, Poole, Cowes and Portsmouth, at times under challenging sea conditions. The pupils were a credit to the school and earnt life-long experiences in the process.

Another of his disciples,Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. (John 6)

As we start this new school year we can feel a little overwhelmed. The Miracle of the Feeding of the Five Thousand reminds us that each of us has something to offer and encourages us to give what we can. For when we give we will receive.
