29 OCTOBER 2023 3 JULY 2023 OCTOBER 2023 Message from the Headmaster We had a vibrant end to last week with the CPA organising the Colour Run for pupils in the Senior School. Those fortunate enough to stand upwind avoided being covered in powered paint as the boys navigated their way around the course, having tremendous fun in the process – I can only imagine the challenge of getting the boys, and the transport home, clean at the end of the evening. The Year 7 pupils enjoyed a residential trip to Calshot Activity Centre in Southampton at the beginning of the week. It was an opportunity for the year to bond, make friends, engage in exciting activities and grow in confidence. Thank you to all the teachers who supported the pupils throughout the trip. On Thursday, our Year 8 and 9 pupils had useful sessions on time management and memory mnemonics to assist them with their study skills. It was a spectacular week of sport with our U15 rugby team progressing in the National Cup, our ski team winning medals at the ESSKIA Finals and our footballers having success against local schools. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the CPA Quiz on Friday night – I am sure it will be an entertaining event and as competitive as ever!

Mr Everitt

Year 7 Residential Year 7 were blessed with beautiful weather on their residential to Calshot Activity Centre near Southampton on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th October. The pupils worked well together during a range of activities: teambuilding, Ringo, epic engineering, archery, rock-climbing and kayaking. The boys were kind and supportive to each other throughout and returned home tired but happy. Mr Chapman

Music News The Music Department is always looking for pupils to start learning instruments. Here is one of our Year 7 pupils, Alexander D, enjoying a taster session with Mrs Mellstrom, on our beautiful Mander organ.

Although we are very keen for children to start any of the musical instruments taught here at Cranmore, we are particularly looking for children in Year 4 and above who would be interested in learning any of the following instruments:

Flute

Bassoon

Oboe

Trombone

French horn

If your child would like a short taster lesson on any of the above instruments, please email lara.horn@cranmore.org and she will arrange this. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Year 8 and 9 Study Sessions with Elevate Education ‘It isn’t enough that pupils simply understand what they need to do in their study; the challenge is to enable them to use and apply the skills they learn and be self-reflective, as they develop their intellect’ Following the very instructive session on Study Skills for Year 7 earlier in the term, two sessions were held for Year 8 & 9 in this, the penultimate week before half-term, which have been designed to build upon the input received in previous years. Specifically, pupils focused on: Time Management in Year 8 Memory Mnemonics in Year 9

Feedback from pupils was very positive, with the majority of pupils saying that they would recommend the session to other pupils. For those who have not heard the term ‘Memory Mnemonics’ before, here is one of our pupil’s explanation: ‘We learned about several things that we had not been doing before. The concept of primacy and recency in memory recall helps us understand why we remember the things we do. We learned that we should stick to short sharp sessions where studying for 25 minutes with a 5-minute break will really help the brain focus and not get tired. Another thing we learned is that doing short physical exercises before a working period can be helpful because it gets your blood moving, increases energy as well as productivity. Finally, we learned about three different ways in which we can remember things: the substitute word method, in which you replace the word with a word that sounds like it; the mental journey in which you replace the term with an object and imagine that object in familiar locations; and peg words in which you rhyme words with numbers and link the term to a number rhyme.’ Mr Pulford, Deputy Head, Academic

Sport Update Rugby - U15s through to the next round of the National Cup

A big congratulations to our U15 rugby team who are through to the next round of the National Cup after beating Gordon’s 63-5. The very impressive performance in this replayed match saw some outstanding attacking rugby and plenty of robust defence. This side that is ever improving welcomes Ibstock Place school tomorrow at Cranmore.

Well done to our U14 rugby players who had a great match against Thomas’s Putney Vale on Tuesday. At Cranmore, over 35 players opt to play rugby in Year 9. Thomas’s were worthy opponents to allow all players to improve their personal rugby development.

Sport Update A huge congratulations to our skiing squad who competed at the ESSKIA Finals last weekend in Norwich. Our U11 teams finished 2nd and 3rd. Our U14 team also finished 2nd in the country with Year 6 pupil Mathias P finishing as the fastest U12 skier overall. All our skiers were superb throughout the competition, and it was great to see them perform so well on the biggest stage.

We had seven U13 football teams in action on Wednesday afternoon. The U13As played Shrewsbury House at Horsley FC. The U13Bs to U13Fs player Broomwood, whilst the U13G team had a tournament at Danes Hill. Tomorrow, four of our U13 sides play against Danes Hill.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Harvest "Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible." St Francis of Assisi Chaplaincy News This week we celebrated the Feast of Carlo Acutis on Thursday. In Year 4 RE we had fun starting to build a scene from the Bible. Our thoughts and prayers are for all those in the Middle East who are suffering at this time.

Reflection

Truly God has given us much. Creation is such a wonderful gift and within it we see the abundance of God’s love. Let us this week seek to be thankful for all that we have received and to look to give back where we can. Be encouraged to put love into action, perhaps by taking a bag of donations to the second hand shop or by visiting an elderly neighbour. Jesus gives Himself fully to us in the Eucharist, try to visit the Chapel or a church this week and spend time with Jesus. Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for us. Prayer Lord, we thank you for the harvest earth has produced. These gifts witness to your infinite love; may the seeds of charity and justice also bear fruit in our hearts. We pray for Israel and for peace in the Middle East. May Your Kingdom come, Your will be done. Amen
