Message from the Headmaster

We were blessed with some glorious weather on Saturday evening for the inaugural CPA Cranfest. Thank you to the members of the CPA for their hard work in organising this entertaining musical event. In addition, this afternoon, together with FOST, they have arranged the annual Colour Run for Cranmore and St Teresa’s. I am sure that our Year 7 and 8 pupils will thoroughly enjoy this event.

There has been a strong focus this week on developing the pupils’ extra-curricular educational experience with an array of exciting activities. On Tuesday, Year 8 travelled to the Warner Brothers Studios where they enjoyed a tour of the Harry Potter sets and had a fascinating lesson about the process of designing a film set. On Thursday, the Year 7 pupils experienced the local area of outstanding natural beauty on their 11 mile ramble across the North Downs. Today and tomorrow, the Year 9 pupils will complete a milestone on their qualifying expedition for Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. I look forward to welcoming them back to base tomorrow afternoon when they will have earned a well-deserved rest.

GCSE Geography Field Trip

Last Friday our GCSE Geographers set off for a sunny day of fieldwork on Wimbledon Common. This made up the Physical Geography Fieldwork component of their GCSE exam. Pupils were faced with the challenges of collecting data in the field and showed great initiative when having to manage their equipment around some rather muddy and stinging nettle-filled riverbanks.

Well done to Oliver B, Dominic B and Tom W who went out of their way to gather additional data for the year group at an additional research site. After a brilliant morning of data collection, our GCSE geographers returned to school to process and evaluate their data. A special mention to Harry W and Jensen W for their fantastic data manipulation.

All pupils gained some excellent practical skills from the day and I look forward to our Urban Fieldwork in September!

Year 8 Trip to Warner Bros. Studio—The Making of Harry Potter

On Tuesday, Year 8 spent a very enjoyable day at the Warner Bros. Studio looking at the original sets, learning about the techniques used to create the special effects and exploring the behind-the-scenes secrets of the Harry Potter film series. Highlights included discovering the Hogwarts Great Hall and exploring the Forbidden Forest, boarding the original Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 ¾ and stepping foot into Gringotts Wizarding Bank, before wandering down Diagon Alley. Located at the Studios where all eight films were produced, the Studio Tour showcases the British talent and artistry that went into the making of the Wizarding World.

Pupils also participated in a session which focused on the set design from the films and learnt about how the Production Designer tackles the script and turns it into sketches, architectural technical drawings, storyboards and a model of the final set.

Set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made, the Studio Tour offers visitors the opportunity to explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and breath-taking special effects.

Amazing Athletics

Two Year 9 pupils, Theo L and Kobey M, represented Guildford District at the Surrey Athletic Championships last Saturday. Theo ran a sensible 800m heat to qualify easily for the final. He then went on to win the final with a new PB and national qualifying time. Kobey dominated the triple jump with a winning jump and a PB of 11. Both pupils are waiting to hear now if they will be picked for the Surrey team at All England Schools. Of the 12 events that took place, Cranmore took gold in two (out of all the schools in Surrey) which is a fantastic achievement for the school. This Saturday, Theo and Kobey have been selected for the Southern Inter-counties Championships to represent the Surrey team.

The Walton and Weybridge Regatta took place last weekend and we had a great representation of rowers. 18 pupils across two divisions competed in 9 races. The pupils, from Years 7 to 10, showcased outstanding development and gained valuable experience across the J13, J14 and J15 races.

Well done to both our U14A and U14B teams in beating Downsend in thrilling cricket matches.

Swimming Success

13 swimmers attended the iconic venue, The London Aquatic Centre, on Saturday to represent Cranmore at the IAPS National Swimming Finals. Qualifying for this event was an incredible achievement, with a great opportunity to swim in the Olympic pool. The swimmers swum in the Medley Relay events and managed to improve on their qualifying times by at least 4 seconds.

Well done!

Individual performances on the day were from Freddie R (Year 8) in the 50m breaststroke, finishing 18th overall. Henry C (Year 7), swimming the 50m fly, made the final on the day finishing 9th overall with a personal best time. Daniel B (Year 8), swimming the 50m front crawl, qualified for the final with a personal best time finishing 7th overall. Charlie S (Year 6), swimming a 50m front crawl, qualified 5th into the final and finished on the podium with a bronze medal. There were outstanding performances from all involved on the day and we are incredibly proud of their efforts in the pool. Well done to all swimmers (Fabian H, Jack T, Arlo W, Theo B-Y, Charlie S, Edward W, Dylan V, Henry C, Ned H, Rocco H, Adrian S, Freddie R, Daniel B).

On Monday 10th June, Cranmore played against Danes Hill School at Clandon Regis Golf Course. 7 boys from Cranmore represented the school across Years 7, 8 and 9. The boys were paired up and played against a pair from Danes Hill in a match play format. The scored ended 2-2 and more experience was gained by playing round a longer more challenging course.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Pilgrimage

A Reading from the Book of Psalms

"Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

It is good to give thanks to the Lord to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night. The just will flourish like the palm-tree and grow like a Lebanon cedar. Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In Him, my rock, there is no wrong.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Reflection

This week we focus on the religious practice of making a Pilgrimage. Pilgrimages can bring us closer to God and give us the time and space we need to discover His presence. A pilgrimage is about the journey not just the destination.

Quotation

"In all trouble you should seek God. You should not set Him over against your troubles, but within them. God can only relieve your troubles if you in your anxiety cling to Him. Trouble should not really be thought of as this thing or that in particular, for our whole life on earth involves trouble; and through the troubles of our earthly pilgrimage we find God." Saint Augustine
