Message from the Headmaster

This week, I would like to pay tribute and give sincere thanks to an inspirational friend and Governor of Cranmore, Mr Michael Henderson. Michael has been a Governor of Cranmore since 1994 and Chair from 2012. He has lived in East Horsley since 1973 and is an active member of the Catholic Church in Effingham, a Council Member, is on the Executive Committee of the Catholic Union of Great Britain and was appointed a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2005. In 2022 he was awarded Knight of St Gregory (KSG), a Papal Award for his services to Catholic education. On the formation of the Effingham Schools Trust in September 2019 Michael became Co-Chair. We are delighted that Michael will remain as a patron of the Trust.

Appointment of New EST Director of Sixth Form

We are pleased to announce that Mr Toby Clouston has been appointed as the Director of The Sixth Form for the Effingham Schools Trust.

Toby joins us from Fullbrook School where he has spent the last four years as Deputy Head, successfully growing their Sixth Form, overseeing the development of the new Sixth Form building, and latterly heading up Teaching and Learning across the school. Prior to this, Toby spent four years at Ash Manor as Assistant Head responsible for both Teaching and Learning, as well as the development and evolution of their curriculum. The foundations of Toby’s teaching career were gained at Stepney Green School in Tower Hamlets, where he spent twelve years teaching History (he also specialises in Business Studies and Economics), going on to head up Key Stage 4 and then becoming Head of the Humanities Faculty. Toby was educated locally at St George’s College Weybridge and read International Politics at Leeds University.

During his time at Tower Hamlets, Toby also played semi-professional Rugby for Esher RFC, captaining the team during their seasons in the Championship. Toby is passionate about all sports and particularly enjoys supporting his eldest daughter who is a keen member of Horsley Girls football team.

Toby is very much looking forward to joining the EST community in September and is excited to help shape the future of the coeducational Sixth Form.

This week was British Science Week and 8SM delivered an inspiring assembly on this year s theme of TIME, from the ancient Egyptians through to the most modern concepts. We discovered that the Babylonians and Egyptians created time to organise themselves, that in a day our heart can beat more than 100,000 times and that the Diomede Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, whilst only 3 miles apart, are separated by 21 hours.

Winners

Congratulations to who gained the highest number of merits this week!

Lecture on the Theory of Special Relativity

Celebrating Albert Einstein’s birthday, Mr Minikin presented a lunchtime lecture on the Theory of Special Relativity. As a consequence of the invariability of the speed of light, clocks that are moving tick off time more slowly than clocks that are stationary. So, if you have lots to do, moving faster will make your time last longer!

Pi Day

The Maths Department recognised Pi Day this week in their lessons with a range of resources investigating the history and application of this magical, irrational, transcendental number! Classes in Years 7, 8 and 9 also took part in an experiment where they dropped sticks from a height to approximate Pi.

International Women

Last Friday, 8CM spoke about International Women members of staff to show support of the 2024 campaign: celebrate diversity and empowerment on International Women's Day 2024 and beyond. International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done. This year's campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected.

Public Speaking Competition

Cranmore's Year 9 debating team participated in a Public Speaking competition at St Teresa's on Thursday 7th March. It was an enjoyable evening and the three teams - two from St Teresa's and one from Cranmoregave a range of well-prepared and engaging speeches on subjects as diverse as whether we should keep the long summer holiday and whether more money should be invested in space exploration. St Teresa's A Team gained a deserved win, but the Cranmore team of Artom, Cavell and Thomas acquitted themselves honourably, with Cavell being presented with the best chairperson award and Thomas A. the best opposing speaker award. We look forward to another competition next year!

Mr Chapman

Our eight U13 hockey teams played some fantastic hockey against Hoe Bridge on Wednesday. On Saturday, our As to Ds played against Feltonfleet managing to win two out of the four matches. On the same day, our U14s played Caterham at St Teresa's, securing a 4-1 win. Last Thursday, our U15s played football against City of London Freemans with the final result being 1 - 1. The U14s A & B football team played against Putney Vale on Tuesday. Our U15 football team was runner-up at the ISFA national final on Wednesday. We are all extremely proud of your performance in this closely contested match.

Jesus said to Nicodemus:

"Sanctify yourself and you will sanctify society."
~ St Francis of Assisi

‘The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him.

Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not be lost but may have eternal life.’

Reflection

This week we hear Jesus speaking those famous words to Nicodemus: ‘God so loved the world.’

Take some time this week to learn a Biblical verse off by heart. The Word of God is powerful and dynamic, it supports us when we feel weak, it gives us faith when we need encouragement. If you haven’t yet watched the series The Chosen, give it a try.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus, your only Son, into the world to save us. Help me to grow in knowledge of how much you love and value me. Amen

St Andrew …Pray for us.

St Maximilian Kolbe Pray for us.
