Message from the Headmaster

In our first Chronicle of the new academic year, I would like to acknowledge some notable achievements by Cranmore pupils over the summer break. Our pupil Eco Council was awarded an Eco Schools Green Flag for their impact and vision for the school; there were some superb results in LAMDA examinations; and we received news that one of our pupils was successful in qualifying from the regional to the global round of the World Scholar's Cup competition.

I am delighted to have everyone back at school and was impressed watching pupils taking part in pre-season training this week. In our first assembly, Danny Care, from the England rugby team based at the World Cup in France, was kind enough to send a personalised message to Cranmore pupils. We wish Danny and the England team the very best of luck in the remainder of the tournament, that is of course until they meet Ireland in the knock-out stages of the competition!

Pupils have settled back in quickly at school. The refurbished dining room has had a superb impact as they have enjoyed the modern look and feel of the space at lunchtime. Pupils have had several team building activities with extracurricular clubs also commencing. They include in excess of twenty choral and music ensembles per week. In sport, there are a similar number of weekly training sessions and fixtures are underway in Biathlon, Football, Golf and Rugby. Congratulations to our U11 and U13 football teams who have successfully navigated their way through the first round of the football Surrey Cup.

It was fantastic to see so many of you at the Information Evenings this week and I know we are all looking forward to the exciting term ahead at Cranmore.

Team Building Sessions

The new school year has started with a series of team building sessions for all of our Senior pupils. They found the sessions fun and engaging. Bonds were built within each team which will help the pupils over the year ahead in their collaborative school work.

House Meetings

On Thursday, we had our first House meetings and Tylor House was set ambitious targets by Edward Foster, the new House Captain, for the year ahead to be motivated academically, creatively and in sport, in order to “win”. The pupils, in the spirit of teamwork, created a giant sign to unite them on their journey to success!

Tall Ships Trip on the Solent

On the final day of last term, eight senior pupils, accompanied by Mr Savvides and Ms Conlan, journeyed to Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth to start the summer holidays with an adventure on the seas. The boys lived on board a 55ft yacht for 3 nights, taking on all the responsibilities of a crew member. They worked together to sail the yacht, winching sails and taking the helm. Additionally, they were responsible for the upkeep of the galley, including cooking meals and keeping the yacht tidy. The crew did plenty of sailing on the Solent and sailed to Lymington and Beaulieu. A great time was had by all and the boys were enthusiastic to return next summer, when we plan to scale up the trip and take many more pupils.

Eco-Council Green Flag Award

The Eco-Council is thrilled to inform you that we received a ‘Green Flag Award’ through Eco-Schools over the summer! It is thanks to the team’s relentless efforts to improve Cranmore’s biodiversity, manage food waste at lunchtime and demonstrate consideration of plastic use at home.

We had some lengthy fantastic feedback from Eco Schools who commented, “It’s clear your Eco-Committee are constantly considering what actions they can take to improve their local community and benefit our planet. Your Action Plan shows that your Eco-Committee have carefully considered how they can involve their entire school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities to achieve maximum impacts and raise awareness amongst their school community. Thank you so much for submitting such a terrific application. We have loved reading about your journey and are incredibly impressed by all you have achieved.”

The team have even bigger plans for this academic year and cannot wait to get started! If you are in the Senior school and would like to join us, please email Mrs Sanders with a short letter outlining your environmental passions.

Sport Update

It was a great start for our rugby teams this week. Having had a fantastic pre-season, our U14s and U15s played against Glyn on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. The U14 A team won 22-17 and the U14B team drew in a superb practice match. Our U13A football team played against Hall Grove in the first round of the Surrey Cup and a further six U13 teams played against Feltonfleet and Rokeby on Wednesday afternoon.

We are proud of our provision to allow Senior pupils to choose either Rowing or Multi-Sports instead of our core sports. Multi-Sports included Athletic Development and a variety of sports this week. Our Sport Scholars have also been working hard with their continued strength and conditioning training.

On Wednesday afternoon, the U15 golf team played RGS at Guildford GC in the National Schools Cup. Good luck to our Ski Squad taking part in the ESSKIA qualifiers tomorrow in Southampton.

Bible Reading

From St Paul’s letter to the Colossians:

As the chosen of God, then, the holy people whom he loves, you are to be clothed in heartfelt compassion, in generosity and humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another, forgive each other….Over all these clothes, put on love, the perfect bond.

Reflection

This year we will place particular focus on the value of Faith. May I encourage you this year to have faith in God. To trust in His presence and in His will. There will be many things that will challenge us but let us have Faith in God to help us along. He loves us and He walks alongside us. Jesus has FAITH in you.

Prayer

Dear Lord at the start of this New School Year calm my fears and help me to walk close to you.
