13 3 JULY 2023 2023 13 NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2023 Message from the Headmaster
We enjoyed an action-packed Saturday with the Henkes Shield taking part on the Henderson Fields in the morning. The annual event was passionately contested with some exceptional Cranmore performances which were cheered on by supporters. At the conclusion of a highly entertaining final U13 fixture, pupils, parents and staff were able to celebrate the retention of the trophy for another year. Well done to everyone who took part and supported the event.
After we had recovered from the excitement of the morning, it was a delight to see so many families at the CPA Cranmore Fireworks that evening. It was a spectacular sold-out event where nearly a thousand people from our Trust community came together to enjoy each other’s company, watch a fabulous display and take in some refreshment. It was thoroughly enjoyable to see the interaction of children from across different age groups playing together. My sincere thanks to the CPA for organising such a welcoming and entertaining event. During the week, Year 10 pupils saw the Quantum Theatre’s performance of A Christmas Carol. The Dickens novel forms part of their GCSE English curriculum and the performance, in the auditorium, brought the text vividly to life. In Computing, our students recently had the opportunity to take part in the Bebras Challenge competition against pupils from across the globe. Next term, they are excited about the prospect of taking part in the Oxford University Computing Challenge.
Mr Everitt
Quantum Theatre Visit for Year 10 Our Year 10 students were treated to an enthralling production of ‘A Christmas Carol’, one of their GCSE set texts. The three actors demonstrated versatility as they portrayed all of the main characters in Dickens’ novella. Music and lighting created the contrasting atmospheres of the gloom of the night during which Scrooge received his visitations and the brightness of Christmas Day with the transformed character of Scrooge bursting with joy and excitement. The students thought that it was a very professional production and that it brought the novella to life.
The Bebras Challenge Last week, our Senior pupils took part in the first round of the Bebras Challenge, competing against pupils across the world. The Bebras Challenge introduces computational thinking to students. It is organised in over 60 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Last November over 365,000 students took part in the UK, and over 3 million worldwide. Successful pupils will be taking part in the first round of The Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC) in January 2024, followed by the second round in March 2024. The results of the Bebras Challenge will be released on Monday 4th December. Mr Afana
Esports News Last week was a busy week for Esports at Cranmore, with our Year 9 and Year 10 students playing matches in the British Esports Association Open Champions. Our Year 10 Rocket League team played and won both of their first two matches. Our Year 9 team is competing in the Overwatch 2 Open Championship. Our Digital Schoolhouse – Splatoon 3 Cranmore heats (for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10) started on Monday 13th November at lunchtime, with 5 matches being played. Teams GRAFFITTI_GUYS, GAME ON, OCTOSQUAD, OCTOLING, and CSG won the first round.

Anti-bullying Week As part of Anti-Bullying Week, Year 6 pupils Oscar H and Teddy L led the Tylor House Meeting. They created team games and activities, which involved other members of the House answering questions on how to stop bullying. All pupils were given a bingo card to complete kind acts throughout the week. Pupils are encouraged to carry these out at home too and be rewarded for their efforts. Mrs Hanson
Upper Prep and Senior pupils have taken part in puzzles on the theme of Anti-bullying at break times in the library this week. This year’s theme is ‘Make a Noise’, meaning that we should not stand back and remain quiet if we are witness to any form of bullying behaviour. Mrs Watkinson

Sport Update Rugby Regional Semi-Final & Henkes Win
Our U15s rugby team played in the quarterfinals of the Regional Cup last Thursday against Weydon school. Cranmore played superbly well scoring some great tries and maintained a solid defence throughout the match. It proved to be a tight game against a very good opposition and Cranmore were behind with 10 minutes to go. However, the team managed a great period of territory and possession which enabled Cranmore to score two late penalties. The match finished 18-15. Cranmore travel to Malmesbury School, Wiltshire for the semi-final later this month.
The Henkes Shield took place on Saturday with 8 football teams in action. The event is an annual competition between Cranmore and Rokeby school, involving age groups U9s to U13s. Established in 1983, this was the 38th year the event has taken place with 2 years being cancelled due to poor weather and Covid. Cranmore had previously won the competition 19 times, to Rokeby's 18. On Saturday, Cranmore managed to win 6 matches and drew 2. Therefore, the overall score was 7-1 to Cranmore meaning that, yet again, Cranmore retained the prestigious shield.
Last Wednesday we had the last U13 block football fixture against Shrewsbury House. Cranmore managed to win all 6 matches which proved to be a brilliant afternoon for the school. On the same day, pupils ran at the English ESSA Regionals at Jude school. We await overall standings to see if we qualify for the Nationals. Also on Thursday, Cranmore had a successful water-polo fixture with St Teresa's. Also this week, our U13s played in the Football Surrey Cup against Kings House in which they unfortunately lost, 3-1 and our U14s had a great rugby match against John Fisher.
Sport Update Biathlon Results A qualifying event for the Nationals took place last month at Downsend School and the Guildford Spectrum. Cranmore had a great set of results on the day and we are waiting to see if we have qualified for the next stage: Cranmore U12 Team (Henry C, Edward W, David L) - 2nd place Henry C - U12 1st place Daniel B - U13 1st place Sam S - U14 3rd place Rowing Camp During half-term 17 pupils participated in a Cranmore School rowing camp at Walton Rowing Club. The camp ran smoothly, catering for all abilities with Learn 2 Row and Improvers squads on offer. Across the three days the boys developed their cardiovascular fitness, movement competencies and rowing technique both on and off the water. During the camp the boys were able to experience how an elite rower would train full time. All boys worked hard with substantial progress being made. Overall, the camp was a great success, and we look forward to the next one. Success on the Ski Slopes A 7.45am meet at Southampton ski slope for the relocated Surrey Schools Skiing championships, usually held at Aldershot Ski Centre, meant an early start for the Junior skiers. Rainy conditions meant for fast skiing and the U9 team, consisting of Mark M-L, Jonty H, Teddy G and Otis P were crowned winners. Jonty H and Harry S were also part of the winning Dual Slalom team. The U11 teams were the fastest U10/U11 teams on the day with Mathias P crowned the fastest U11/U12 boy for the second time this year! Rafferty C-D was 3rd fastest and Samuel B 2nd fastest. The U14s arrived for the afternoon and had the fastest of the conditions as the rain hammered down. Cranmore finished 3rd (Rocco H, Freddie B, Theo T and Aidan H) and 4th (Sam S, Jacob S and Thomas C). Well done to all involved. If your son would like to be involved in the school ski programme then please contact Mr Barson. Mouthguards Please see link for more information regarding OPRO Cranmore mouthguards. A Message from our Chaplaincy Team
Called To Be Saints "To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement." Saint Augustine Chaplaincy News Adoration and Prayer will take place every Wednesday from 8am-8.25am in the School Chapel. All are welcome.
Reflection This week we focused on the being called to become saints. The Feast of St Andrew on 30th November reminds us of our call to follow Jesus. There can be no greater adventure. This week research a saint of your choice and ask for their guidance.
Prayer
Loving and compassionate God,
We believe that you are present. Help us throughout this year to remain close to you.
Help us to be the best that we can be so that we can bring out the best in those around us. Lord, we recognise that we cannot do everything but, in your strength, and through your spirit we can do great things together. Stay with us on our journey throughout this year.
Amen.
