15 APRIL 2024

Message from the Headmaster

It was a delight to welcome everyone back to school this week and the pupils were suitably enthusiastic about the term ahead. Many were also excited to share their family holiday experiences or stories from the school ski trip to Italy and the language excursion to France. Closer to home, favourable weather conditions have meant that the squares and nets have been in full use throughout this week in preparation for the cricket season ahead.

I would like to congratulate those who took part in the National Biathlon Finals in Bath and those who have qualified for the IAPS Swimming Finals at the London Aquatic Centre next month.

Over this weekend, some of our Year 10 pupils will be taking part in their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice Expedition in Basingstoke. We wish them the very best of luck as they develop their navigation and practical skills on this challenging canoeing expedition.

French Trip to Nice

On Monday 8th April, pupils in Years 9 and 10 flew to Nice for a four-day trip to improve their French and learn more about the French culture. Upon arrival on Monday, they visited the Place Massena and had a tour of Nice, including the Old Town and the Colline du Château. The day was rounded off with a lovely threecourse dinner.

On Tuesday, after a large buffet breakfast, they headed to the Language School for three hours of lessons in French. In the afternoon, they took the train to Monaco and visited the sites there including Prince Albert’s car collection.

On Wednesday, the morning was again spent in lessons in French followed by a visit to the Chagall museum and the National Museum of Sport where the boys were able to enjoy some interactive games.

After a final morning of lessons in French on Thursday, they enjoyed lunch on the beach, skimmed stones on the water, bought souvenirs and ate some rather large ice creams in the Old Town. We were blessed with some fine weather and wonderful food.

Year 7 Assembly about Earth Day

On Friday 7MB kicked off this term's class assemblies by giving an important presentation on the theme of Earth Day 2024. After detailed research each member wrote their script addressing the past 20 years of environmental history globally. They then reflected on three main areas for the future: Plastics, Pollinators and Power. 7MB delivered a powerful message about environmental stewardship and our personal responsibility over the conservation of biodiversity on our planet. A special mention to Oscar T, Ben S, Thomas C, Peter N and Alexander D for their brilliant contributions to the assembly. Well done 7MB!

National Biathlon Final

A number of Cranmore pupils from Year 4 to Year 9 qualified for the GB Schools National Biathlon Finals which were held in Bath just before the Easter holidays. There were some exceptional performances both in the pool and on the track with the Year 4 team (Fabian H, Matthew B, Titus G, William R) winning the team gold medal and the Year 5 team (Arlo W, Rory C, Harry S) winning the silver medal in the team events. Also, some great individual performances with personal best achievements from Edward W (Year 7), Freddie R (Year 8), a top 10 finish in the country from Daniel B (Year 8) and Theo L (Year 9) winning the run component finishing 5th overall. Well done to all the pupils involved.

In swimming, we have qualified for both relays at the U11 ESSA Regional event in May. Also, we have had early signs that we have a large representation at the IAPS Finals at the London Aquatic Centre next month.

GCSE PE

On Monday, the Year 10 PE GCSE cohort had a practice moderation day. This was a chance for pupils to be assessed for their chosen sports and gauge predicted grades. Sports included cricket, basketball, badminton, table tennis, squash rugby, football and athletics.

The Season of Easter

Bible Reading

"And he departed from our sight that we might return to our hearts and find him there. For he left us, and behold, he is here." ~

Saint Augustine

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us?”

Reflection

We sometimes recognise Jesus, see Him know that He is near. And yet at other times He seems far off and we are afraid.

The story of the resurrection is the story of life overcoming death, love overcoming hate.

Prayer

Draw us forth, God of all creation. Draw us forward and away from limited certainty into the immense world of your love. Give us the capacity to even for a moment taste the richness of the feast you give us.

Give us the peace to live with uncertainty, with questions, with doubts.

Help us to experience the resurrection anew with open wonder and an increasing ability to see you in the people of Easter.

St Andrew …Pray for us.

St Maximilian Kolbe Pray for us.
