Message from the Headmaster

A warm welcome back to everyone after the half-term break. It proved to be a busy period on-site with the new Science and Technology Centre rapidly taking shape. Our older pupils have already had a visit to the impressive building, and details will be shared about the opportunity for parents to tour the Centre towards the end of this term.

On Tuesday, all our pupils and staff were treated to delicious pancakes at lunchtime before the start of Lent. The following day, our school community came together to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr. Stephen. Thank you to the parents who joined us and I know they were particularly impressed with the powerful collective singing voice of our pupils.

I would like to congratulate the pupils from Cranmore who competed in the English Ski Championships in Bormio last week. All the boys skied very well with three finishing in the top 20 in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events. We are exceptionally proud of their performance and efforts.

This week has been Internet Safety Week across the Trust. A group of pupils participated in the E Sports Tournament in London. Competition was strong but the pupils had an enjoyable first experience of the event.

Well done to our Year 9 mathematicians who participated in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a national competition that encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. There were some impressive results with pupils being awarded bronze and silver certificates for their problem-solving skills. Well done to everyone involved.

UKMT Maths Challenge

Earlier in February, all pupils in Year 9 sat the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is the first time pupils in Cranmore took part in the challenge, which is open to pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 in schools in the UK and across the world. Congratulations to our high achieving problem solvers who were awarded certificates for their performance. This is a superb achievement for the pupils, particularly since they are the youngest in the age bracket for the challenge. We are expecting great things from our pupils as they move into year 10 and 11! Special congratulations to Charles N who was awarded a certificate for Best in School. It will be the turn of our Year 7 and 8 pupils to take part in the Junior Maths Challenge shortly after the Easter break.

Music News

Congratulations to this fine young horn player, Sam B (8MR) who played the beautiful ‘Evening Prayer’ by Humperdinck during senior assembly. He was awarded a Distinction for his excellent performance.

Thought for the week:

How will you mark Lent?

A Prayer for Lent

Almighty and ever living God, you invite us deeper into your world, your people, your Lent. May this time be one of outward focus; seeking you in those we often ignore. Help us live a Lent focused on freedom, generosity and encounter. Give us hearts hungry to serve you and those who need what we have to give.

Amen

REFLECTION

Let us Pray: Our Father Hail Mary

1 minute silence

To experience Lent with love means caring for those who suffer or feel abandoned and fearful.”

Why 40 days? The number 40 is significant in Scripture. In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the Earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain. The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God. Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. What will you do over the next 40 days?
