18 MARCH 2024

Message from the Headmaster

As the term comes to an end, I have been reflecting on all of our pupils’ achievements achieved since the beginning of the calendar year and am wholeheartedly impressed. There have been numerous events, activities and performances, and I know our pupils have benefitted greatly from a variety of enriching experiences.

Some of the highlights include Net Ministries sharing their passion about faith and hope with our pupils in Years 8 and 9, and Year 7 pupils enjoying a Lenten Retreat at Wintershall. We had workshops from Bold Voices, presentations from the Daniel Spargo Mabbs Foundation, a speaker on cybersecurity, an author visit, music and drama theatre visits, CCF cadets flying glider planes and pupils attending the Day in the Life of the Sixth Form event.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cranmore Live with all three Trust schools taking part in the workshops and performance, and our Spring Term production of Emil and the Detectives. Sporting success came in many forms from our triumphant pupils in the National ISA Hockey and cross-country championships to competing in the football National Bowl final.

The pupils have earned a well-deserved rest and I know that they will enjoy the Easter break.

Senior Drama Production: Emil and the Detectives

At the end of last week, Senior pupils performed their production of Emil and the Detectives, a heart warming play by Erich Kästner in which children are portrayed as having solidarity, courage and imagination. Our pupils gave convincing performances and worked together to produce a thoroughly entertaining performance which delighted the audiences.

“It is impossible for us to be like children again but we can try and prevent children from becoming like us.”

The World Scholars’ Cup

“On the third and fourth of March I (and the rest of my team) had the opportunity to participate in a regional round of the World Scholars’ Cup, up at St. Teresa's, Effingham. My team and I managed to qualify for the Global round. We participated in many events such as debating, we found the whole thing very fun and we hope that others can join the event next year. I was pleased to receive a number of commendations, particularly as I was competing within a team that was older than my age group.”

On the 3rd and 4th of March 2024 Daniel, Colin and I, Edward, performed in a team of three in the World Scholars’ Cup. In this event we competed in four different challenges over the course of two days. The challenges were: a debate in a team, an individual quiz called the scholars’ challenge, a team quiz called the scholars’ bowl and collaborative writing. At the end there was a closing ceremony to see which teams qualified and for rewards for how well teams or individuals did in the events. Our team (243) qualified to the Global Round which we were very pleased about. Our favourite part though was adopting our new alpaca friends: Jerry, Jerry and Jerry!

The Renaissance Challenge 2024

This week the Renaissance Challenge was launched for our Year 7 academic scholars and gifted pupils. Mr Pulford and Mr Heaver convened a meeting between the Year 8 pupils who took part in last year’s challenge and the current Year 7 pupils.

The pupils enjoyed a cookie and a drink as they heard about historical investigation projects into WW2 Spitfires, which led to a pupil joining a flying school, as well as interesting projects within the various badges, which include current affairs; art and culture; museums, galleries and theatre; reading; science and maths.

Year 10 Visit to Year 1 to Talk about Crystals

Five of our Year 10 boys visited Year 1 this week to give a talk on crystals. After introducing themselves the Year 10 pupils explained how they made the crystals and answered some excellent questions from our Year 1 pupils.

Well done everyone!

An Introduction the Senior School for Year 5 Pupils

Thank you to our Year 10 students who talked to the Year 5 pupils about life in the Senior School on Wednesday afternoon. They were a real credit to the school as they described the many and varied opportunities on offer and the younger pupils thoroughly enjoyed talking to them.

Year 9 pupils have been litter picking for the volunteering component of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and they will be continuing with this activity until the end of the Summer Term. They are providing a great example to the school community by carrying out this work. Well done, boys!

Congratulations to Morton House who are our overall House Cup Winners for this term!

Hockey

Last Wednesday, our U13A team (with a few players missing due to drama performances) finished Plate finalists at the hockey UKSA event in Burgess Hill, Sussex. Also on Wednesday afternoon, five U13 Cranmore teams went undefeated against Shrewsbury House. Congratulations to our U15 hockey team, who had an impressive 6-0 away win at Worth. The fixture, which took place on Saturday morning, showcased some fantastic play and tactical concepts that the team has been working on throughout the season. Well done to those boys representing the school. Four U13 sides went undefeated against Danes Hill on Wednesday. Again, there was some outstanding hockey on display which was a fitting way to finish the season.

Cross-Country

On Tuesday, our Senior Cross Country team went over to Danes Hill for their annual Cross Country event. There were over 120 runners in each race and our boys had a fantastic run. All boys showed great determination across the very hilly and muddy course. Ben S was running against boys in the year above and he finished 3rd. As a senior team, the boys came 2nd overall. Well done, boys!

Rosslyn Park 7's

Our U13s and U14s played at the prestigious Rosslyn Park 7s this week. The U14s side had an excellent win against a strong Dorset school, Dean Close. The team finished second in their pool which unfortunately meant they didn't progress to the second day. The U13s played in a round-robin format yesterday which included the following schools: King's House, Cheltenham College, Terra Nova, The Hawthorns, and Mill Hill & Belmont.

This Saturday we have 14 athletes competing at the GB Schools National Biathlon Finals in Bath. Good luck to all pupils involved.

Bible Reading

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Reflection

"Holy Week is a good occasion to go to confession and to take up the right path again."
Pope Francis

This week let us reflect and think about the Last Supper, remembering that on Sunday we begin Holy Week. Jesus begins the week entering triumphantly into Jerusalem and is going to celebrate his Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. Each moment within Holy Week is deeply symbolic. Jesus shows how much he loves us. He puts his love into action and takes on our

burden

of

sin. Spend time

over this Easter break to draw close to the one who has given everything for us.

Prayer

Draw us forth, God of all creation.

Draw us away from limited certainty into the world of your immense love.

Give us the capacity to taste even for a moment the richness of the feast you give us.

Give us the peace to live with uncertainty, with questions, with doubts.

Help us to experience the resurrection anew with open wonder and an increasing ability to see you.

St Andrew Pray for us.

St Maximilian Kolbe Pray for us.
