Message from the Headmaster
We welcomed many prospective families to Open Morning in glorious weather last Saturday. Thank you to the pupils who were part of classroom demonstrations, gave musical performances and led tours. Families were extremely impressed by our pupils, staff and facilities. Thank you also to the members of our CPA who managed the popular refreshment stations.
This academic year we focus on our school value, Faith, and on Wednesday we celebrated our New School Year Mass. During the Trust’s Safer Internet Week, pupils, staff and parents had opportunities to learn about keeping children safe online. Year 7 pupils enjoyed their first study skills session introducing them to engaging strategies which will be built upon with future sessions as they progress through the Senior school.
We are excited to welcome poet Laura Mucha to Cranmore on 5th of October, which is National Poetry Day. The National Literacy Trust and the Royal British Legion have a series of online poetry workshops for pupils on the theme of Remembrance, the final one of which is on National Poetry Day and Cranmore is delighted to be hosting this event. A small number of younger pupils will perform a poem in the live workshop which will be broadcast to over 100 other schools around the country. It is an excellent opportunity for some of our boys to experience and learn about the process of broadcasting whilst being inspired with their poetry writing.

Year 7 Study Skills with Elevate Education
It isn’t enough that pupils simply understand what they need to do in their study; the challenge is to enable them to use and apply the skills they learn efficiently, be self-reflective and develop good habits.
To support this aim we instructed an external company to conduct this important session, which took place on Tuesday this week. The focus was on how to take notes efficiently, without compromising on detail. Pupils were also introduced to the concept of selective reading, where they focus on identifying key words or phrases rather than the whole text.
The presenter conducted the session with enthusiasm and clarity and pupils were very receptive to the input. We will build upon this year’s session with Time Management in Year 8, Memory Mnemonics in Year 9 and ‘Study Sensei’ for Year 10.

School Council Nominations
Senior pupils are invited to stand for election to this year’s School Council. Pupils who are interested in this role should prepare a speech to give to their class explaining the reasons why they would make a good school council representative. (Pupils may wish to include a PowerPoint, but this is not essential).
Elections will be held in Form time 25 September - 6th October. Good luck to all the pupils who stand for nomination.

E-Safety Talks
On Thursday 21st September, we welcomed Mr Karl Hopwood, an independent e-safety expert, who met with all of our Upper Prep and Senior pupils. Karl is a member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety and sits on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He provided engaging sessions in which our pupils learnt about the current issues and risks, how to stay safe online as well as the worrying increase of cyberbullying and its consequences.
Karl has shared a list of online resources and useful links for parents regarding online safety, which will be sent out via next week’s School Post.
Summer Reading Challenge
The following pupils completed the Summer Reading Challenge which involved reading books from a variety of different genres. Congratulations to all of them! They will receive their certificates in next week’s assembly.

Art Scholars’ Visit to West Horsley Place
The Art Scholars visited West Horsley Place on Wednesday to view the ‘Spirit of Adventure’ exhibition curated by local art collector Chris Ingram. The collection included artwork from artists such as Henry Moore and Antony Caro, as well as contemporary artists new to the scene. The students explored the work on display, choosing a favourite piece to study further. They have now start planning their own response inspired by the research undertaken. We hope to exhibit their outcomes later in the year both at Cranmore and at West Horsley Place.

Forgiveness
We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.”
Martin Luther King Junior
Bible Reading
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
Matthew 18
Reflection
This year we know that there will be times when we will need to forgive and be forgiven. Within the Sacrament of Reconciliation we can experience in a real way the gift of forgiveness.

Jesus, You know that there are people in my life that have caused me pain, and I'm not sure if right now I even want to forgive. But I pray now for the grace to want to make room for Your healing. Amen
