20 3 JULY 2023 2023 20 NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2023 Message from the Headmaster

On Monday we had a record number of visitors from local schools to Cranmore to take our 11+ and 13+ assessments. Those looking to join our school in September were interviewed before sitting their exams in the hall and having lunch. Later in the week some of the pupils returned to join our current Year 6 pupils for scholarship assessments in Art, Drama, Music and Sport.

On Monday, Mr Harris welcomed parents to Cranmore’s first music concert performed by GCSE pupils. This was followed by our Year 10 Music and Drama pupils watching the satirical musical “Oh What a Lovely War” which provided insight into how the arts reflect historical, cultural and political events. Parents and pupils interested in the CCF programme were invited to a presentation at St Teresa’s to learn about what pupils can expect from becoming a member of the CCF.

As the rugby season begins for pupils in the Senior School, my congratulations to our U15 football team that were successful in winning the next round of the National Cup ensuring that they progress through to the QuarterFinals. Well done also to the swimmers who have qualified to represent London South at the ISA Swimming National Finals to be held at the London Aquatic Centre next Friday 1st December.

Mr Everitt

Philosophy Club An inquisitive group of Year 9 pupils has been attending Philosophy Club this half term. The students involved have shown an impressive knowledge of some of the ethical frameworks for thinking as well as an understanding of the key ancient figures of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.

This week we read and discussed an interesting article by Quentin Mareuse about the distinction of things: When a rock breaks in two, you get two rocks. But when a chair breaks in two, you get two parts of a chair. Why the difference? What makes something only a part of something else, as opposed to a thing in its own right? Perhaps our intuition can be explained by the type-token distinction. The type-token distinction goes back to Plato and Aristotle, and was specifically applied by the scholastic philosophers of the Middle Ages who followed in their tradition. This theory separates types, which are concepts or categories for a set of similar objects, from tokens, which are particular concrete examples of those types. The Aristolean Award was also offered and will be shared more widely in due course.

Mr Pulford, Deputy Head Academic

Anti-Bullying Week: Odd Socks Day

House Cup Winners

The whole school took part in Odd Socks Day last Friday. The theme this year was ‘Make a Noise about Bullying.’ Odd Socks Day helps us to celebrate the fact that we are all different.

Congratulations to Bowen House who gained the highest number of merits this week!

Eco Council News One of the big topics the Eco Council is working on at Cranmore this year is healthy eating. We are particularly interested in the enjoyment of more plant-based meals so this week one of our Eco team would like to share a favourite vegetarian recipe for you to try at home.

GCSE Drama Theatre Trip to Kafka’s ‘The Metamorphosis’ On Thursday evening, the Drama GCSE pupils attended a theatre adaptation of Franz Kafka’s novella, Metamorphosis at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. The tale, originally written in 1915, shows the pressures placed on a young man’s shoulders to financially support his family. When he changes form he becomes a burden to them and society. Frantic Assembly’s interpretation used physical theatre to convey the individual characters’ transformations. It was a challenging piece that introduced the pupils to a new approach and style of theatre. They were fortunate to have a Q and A with the director and actors at the end of the show.

Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Sport Update London & South-East Swimming Representation Five of our senior swimmers have successfully qualified to represent London South at the ISA Swimming National Finals to be held at the London Aquatic Centre next Friday 1st December. This is an amazing achievement and a first for Cranmore. The swimmers involved are Jensen W, Jake B, Daniel B, Freddie R and Henry C.

Biathlon Bronze for Year 8 Pupil Year 8 pupil Freddie R entered the Regional Biathlon qualifiers at Whitgift last weekend. A superb effort saw him finish 3rd. Freddie alongside other Cranmore pupils will wait to see if they have made national qualification.

U15s Football National Cup Run Continues On Wednesday, the Cranmore U15 Football team travelled to Ryde school on the Isle of White for the latest round of the National Cup. Cranmore won 2-0 with goals from Adam H and James O.

Our U12s, U13s and U14s have had some great rugby matches this week against Feltonfleet, St John's and Cranleigh.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Using Our Talents "Because God has made us for Himself, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him." Saint Augustine

Chaplaincy News

Tutor groups have been visiting the school chapel to spend time in prayer and silence. It is a wonderful way to start the day, offering it up to God and asking for His help. Pupils have also enjoyed reading and leading others in prayer. Adoration continues to take place every Wednesday from 8am-8.25am in the School Chapel. On Thursday 30th November we have our St Andrew’s Day Mass at 11.15am in the Auditorium. Do come along if you can.

Reflection

This week we focused on using our talents. “Each of us is willed by God and God has given each of us a definite purpose that he has not given to any other”. These are the words of St John Henry Newman. What wonderful news this is. We all have purpose and are loved by God.

Prayer

Lord, help us to be wise and faithful servants. May we use whatever we have for good, so that we may help others. May we return all that you have given us to you - all for the greater glory of the Father, so that we might hear these words some day with our own ears: “Well done, good and faithful servant, ... come and join in your master’s happiness.”

Stay for as long or as little as you need This is a time of silent prayer

When we face the sun we get a tan… but when we stand before Jesus in the Eucharist we become saints. Blessed Carlo Acutis
