822JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 JANUARY 2024 Message from the Headmaster

Last Friday the Year 8 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their Ninja Warrior experience in Guildford. They tested their skills while navigating an array of obstacles and enjoying each other’s company. On Wednesday our Year 10 GCSE Music and Drama pupils went to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre to attend the theatrical production of Oh What a Lovely War. The highly anticipated performance was a compelling blend of drama, music, and satirical storytelling about conflict. The organisation Bold Voices hosted an online session for parents on Tuesday before delivering workshops and presentations to Cranmore pupils the following day. Our pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 explored the impact of gender inequality and our Year 10 pupils expanded their understanding of the impact of gender stereotypes on the power dynamic within relationships and the issue of consent. Congratulations to all the pupils who took part in the Dragons’ Den House competition. Stokes were the eventual winners having secured the most investment from the Dragons for their AI Eagle Eye Sports App. With temperatures returning to seasonal norms, the Sports Department breathed a sigh of relief as the frozen pitches thawed to allow pupils to play fixtures. I am looking forward to supporting our rugby teams in the annual Murray Cup at Rokeby tomorrow morning. I wish everyone involved the very best of luck.

Mr Everitt

Dragons’ Den This week the Senior School participated in a Dragons’ Den competition. There were six pitches from the different houses - a Toilet Roll Dispenser, a Mental Health App, Cranmore key rings and drinks bottles, a Weighted Beach Towel, an AI Eagle Eye Sports App and a Mobile Case Charger. Our two ‘Dragons’, Mr Everitt and Mr McGhee, were impressed by the excellent pitches. After much deliberation, they decided to invest £50,000 in the Cranmore key rings and water bottles, £100,000 in the Mental Health App and £250,000 in the AI Eagle Eye Sports App. Congratulations to Stokes for winning the inaugural Dragons Den Cup and well done to all the boys who organised and presented their pitches. Mr O’Neill

Year 8 Trip to Ninja Warrior Year 8 pupils enjoyed an exciting day out last Friday at Ninja Warrior in Guildford. They climbed, balanced and swung across obstacles and had great fun on the inflatable. In addition, there were several climbing activities. This was a fun-filled afternoon and a lovely way to blow off some steam after the previous week’s exams. Mr McGhee, Head of Year 8

Bold Voices Gender Inequality Talks for Years 7 to 10 All of our Senior pupils attended talks on Wednesday this week by the organisation Bold Voices. Pupils in Years 7 to 9 took part in sessions about Gender Inequality while Year 10 attended a session entitled Consent is Cultural: What’s Shaping Our Relationships? The Gender Inequality talk introduced pupils to the concept that all forms of gender inequality are connected together through the exploration of gender stereotypes, gendered language, harmful attitudes and their negative outcomes for all genders. The talk concluded with an emphasis on the need for a collaborative movement from all genders in order to achieve equality. The Consent talk covered the power dynamics at play in relationships which are caused by those gender stereotypes. Pre-conceptions were challenged throughout the talks and everyone left with much food for thought about these important topics. Ms Schembri, Assistant Head

Year 10 Theatre Visit to See ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ The Year 10 Drama and Music pupils went to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre to witness some very versatile actor and musician performers who worked as an incredible ensemble to recreate the iconic World War 1 musical satire, Oh What a Lovely War. The plot is introduced as the ‘War Game’. The cast were very good at encouraging audience participation and laughter with the uplifting war time songs (known as the tickle) and then juxtaposing this with the backdrop of the political decisions that led to such fatalities and unthinkable statistics (known as the slap). It intentionally creates an uncomfortable feeling for the audience, making it both entertaining but emotionally and intellectually challenging. Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Sports News Cross-Country Success On Saturday, four of our Senior runners went over to Reigate Priory Park to race at the Surrey Schools Cross Country Championships. They were representing Guildford after qualifying a few months ago.

Henry C and Ben S, were in the U13 category and they had a brilliant race. Ben came 6th which meant he has qualified to represent Surrey at the South East Championships and also at the English Schools Championships. This is a huge achievement where all the best Cross-Country runners in the country come together and compete. Henry had a very strong run and came 13th, meaning he has also qualified to represent Surrey at the South East Championships, which is brilliant. Daniel B and Theo L were in the Junior Boys category. There was a strong field of runners but both boys had a great run. Daniel was running against boys in the year above and he came 12th in his category and 2nd in his age group. This means that he also qualified to represent Surrey at the South East Championships—he had an excellent run. In addition, Theo has qualified to represent Surrey at both the English Schools and the South East Championships. He finished 6th which meant that he gained entry into the next round at both events, which is incredible. Well done to all four boys for qualifying to represent Surrey, in Cross Country. Football & Rugby Our U14s and U15s played football this week against Wetherby Senior School, whilst our U12s and U13s rugby teams played against John Fisher, Downsend and Rokeby. It has been a successful week with Cranmore winning seven of the 8 matches.

Murray Cup this Saturday The Murray Cup is an annual rugby event between Cranmore and Rokeby. Teams compete for a point across U9s U13s to decide the overall winners of the Murray Cup. Good luck to the eight teams involved.

Reflection

This week we learn from our readings that God calls all of us to follow Him. The top 10 Instagram accounts with the most followers are Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Selena Gomez—all wonderfully talented people. Perhaps we may wonder how many followers Jesus would have if He opened an account or if we have the same talents in us? Yet Jesus met people one by one and called them by name. He calls each of us by name to follow Him; we are called to become Fishers of Men as we all have something to offer. Prayer

We pray for all those who find themselves homeless at this time. We pray for those who are affected by the rising cost of heating their homes. We pray for all those who are ill or unwell. St Andrew …Pray for us. St Maximilian Kolbe ….Pray for us. Amen
