Message from the Headmaster
I would like to congratulate the Year 10 pupils on their successful weekend of canoeing and navigation in Basingstoke in preparation for their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. They performed exceptionally and returned late on Sunday evening for a well-deserved rest. There were some notable performances last week in sport with the U14 cricket team victorious in the Surrey Cup match against Charterhouse and the U15 golf team winning at Cranleigh. Congratulations also to Year 8 pupil Theo T who performed very well in the British Ski Championships in Tignes over the Easter holidays.
At the start of the week, the Year 10 Art GCSE pupils completed their first timed practical. On Tuesday, Year 9 visited Bletchley Park to supplement their History studies and had the opportunity to see exhibitions and historic buildings, providing insight into how the codebreakers would have worked. As the week drew to an end, pupils in Years 7 and 8 took on the Junior Maths Challenge which is run nationally by the UK Maths Trust. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency.
Our Year 7 class assembly on Wednesday focused on the London Marathon and fundraising for worthy causes. As we continue with our charitable work as a school, we shared with the pupils that many teaching and support staff will be taking part in the Surrey Half Marathon in September to help raise funds for our local charity Cherry Trees.
Looking further ahead, I look forward to seeing many of you at two important Trust events in the coming weeks: the Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday 30th April and the CCF Inspection Parade on Thursday 2
Mr Everitt 22 APRIL 2024Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice
Last Friday, fourteen Year 10 pupils travelled to Basingstoke Canal Centre for their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice. They were greeted by Rhod and Lukas, their canoeing instructors for the weekend. The pupils set up their tents and organised their homes for the next three days. They received a briefing on how to use the canoes and how to put on their life buoyancy aids. Then they headed to the water with their canoes and spent a couple of hours on the water in order to become familiar with their new mode of transport. Their sporting abilities were very beneficial and they took to the water like ducks. They returned for lunch, after which they returned to the water until later in the day. In the evening, they had a good hot meal and played some ball games. As night fell, they retreated into their tents. We were lucky with the weather: it remained dry all day but it was cold at night. On Saturday and Sunday, they arose at about 7am and spent all day on the canal practising their canoeing. Well done, everyone, on an amazing new adventure.

Year 9 Trip to Bletchley Park
On Tuesday the Year 9 pupils went to Bletchley Park, the central site of the UK’s code-breaking efforts during World War II. They had a guided tour; watched an immersive cinematic experience about D-Day; took part in a fascinating Battle of the Atlantic workshop which involved using a real Enigma codebreaking machine; and had time to wander round the parts of the site which most interested them. It was an enriching experience which complemented their study of World War II history.

It was wonderful to welcome so many talented children to our Effingham School’s Music course during the Easter holidays. Over the span of five days, they refined their skills under the guidance of our music department and instructors, all in preparation for an extraordinary final concert!

Chasing, Charterhouse only managed to score 81-6 (20 overs). Skiing
Congratulations to ski squad member Theo T who did very well in the British Championships in Tignes over the Easter holidays. In the U14 slalom, Theo finished 18th out of 56. He was the 4th fastest in his own age category which was a great achievement considering the ability of the rest of the skiers.

The Season of Easter
Bible Reading
“
"And he departed from our sight that we might return to our hearts and find him there. For he left us, and behold, he is here." ~
Saint AugustineI am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me just as the Father knows me and I know the Father and I lay down my life for my sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also.”
Reflection
In this week's Gospel we see Jesus the Good Shepherd explaining how His sheep know His voice. Who are the people in your life whom you can recognise just by the sound of their voice, even with just a few words on the phone? Whose voice do you love to hear? Maybe you associate good things with that voice, like granny coming to visit! How good are you at recognising someone's tone of voice and what that means? What kind of tone of voice do you think Jesus speaks to you in? Is there space in your home to hear the voice of Jesus, or is there always a lot of noise? Is there a way that, as a family, you could create quiet time to let Jesus speak His word into your hearts?
Prayer
Teach me to walk as you walk Beside those in mourning so that they will know joy, Beside those in fear that they will know comfort, Beside those in hunger that they will feast until their cup overflows. Amen
