Message from the Headmaster

During Safer Internet Week, our pupils were able to benefit from resources that refined their skills in navigating the digital world in which we exist. Parents of pupils in Years 7 and 8 were able to hear from Susan Dunigan, from The Enlightened Parent, who covered what children can be exposed to online and how parents can protect them from harmful content. We also celebrated the European Day of Languages this week and pupils were able to participate in an array of exciting activities including quizzes and a European themed lunch.

Our GCSE pupils have focussed on their subject courses throughout this week. Year 11 musicians were recording solo pieces, Year 10 geographers visited Stratford for a Human Geography field trip, and Year 10 pupils had a presentation in study skills from our guest company Elevate. Looking ahead to A-level, it was wonderful to meet families from all three schools at the EST Sixth Form presentation evening on Thursday. It was an informative and enlightening evening highlighting the exciting final two years of the co-educational journey within our Trust.

This year we are focussing on our school value of Community In this week’s Chronicle you will see photos from a charity football match held at the beginning of term in remembrance of an old Cranmore pupil, Jack Rickerd, who sadly passed away earlier this year. It was an opportunity for past families and friends from our community to come together in remembrance and also to reflect on the strong bonds pupils forge during their time at Cranmore.

Effingham Sixth Form Open Evening

Our current Year 11 pupils from across the Trust and other prospective Sixth Form families attended our Sixth Form Open evening on Thursday. They were able to discuss their A-Level options for next year and view the facilities from which our Sixth Formers will benefit. These will include their new café, gym, Science labs, Art classrooms and Design and Technology workshop in addition to the excellent facilities already available such as our lecture theatre and university style classrooms.

The informative evening gave everyone the opportunity to hear about our exciting new developments and students the chance to meet their A Level teachers, EPQ and Careers supervisors. With thirty A level subjects on

Year 10 Biology—Heart Dissection

This week, Year 10 students experienced one of the most exciting required practicals in Biology: the dissection of a heart. They learned about the structure of the heart and the detailed pathway of blood through it. It was great to see their enthusiasm as they eagerly identified and labelled the different chambers, vessels and valves of the heart.

Pupil Toby H said “Cutting open the heart was a bloodpumping experience! It was great to see the main artery and all the veins that pump blood around our body.”

Year 10 Study Session with Elevate Education

It isn’t enough that pupils simply understand what they need to do in their study; the challenge is to enable them to use and apply the skills they learn and be self-reflective, as they develop their intellect.

Year 10 took part in a very instructive study session entitled ‘Study Sensei’ this week. The session was the fourth in a series, which follows:

Study Skills in Year 7

Time Management in Year 8

Memory Mnemonics in Year 9

Pupils were advised to make detailed notes, keep work organised and make full use of exam boards’ specifications, as well as breaking tasks into manageable chunks. A timeline for revision was considered, breaking down the final weeks before an assessment into specific tasks. An impressive 100% of pupils who attended said that they would recommend the session.

Aiden provides a summary of the session:

We took part in a revision talk given by Jack from Elevate Education. He demonstrated a number of effective ways to revise like shortening notes based upon key words and what to do in the build up to big assessments. These are both very important skills to learn about in the year and half time period building up to our GCSEs. As well as this we were shown how to productively build up to doing past papers and use visual tools such as mind maps and traffic light systems to help show understanding of different curriculums. This was a great experience and a useful time to be shown these specific techniques which help retain information.

Next autumn, in Year 11, pupils will take part in their final session: ‘Ace your Exams’.

We celebrated Safer Internet Week this week across our Trust. Our pupils enthusiastically participated in various activities during form time, lessons, and house assemblies. These activities highlighted the significance of staying

Fundraising Event in Memory of Jack Rickerd

During the summer holidays, a 5-a-side football tournament took place at Cranmore in memory of ex-pupil, Jack Rickerd, in support of the charity Snow Camp.

In March of 2024, Jack was involved in a very serious skiing accident whilst fulfilling his dream of living and working in the Canadian Rockies. Despite the best efforts of friends and medical teams, Jack was unable to overcome his injuries and very sadly passed away on 26th March, leaving his family and friends simply devastated.

Jack was a fantastic skier and was at his happiest in the mountains. He was a kind, funny and loyal friend to so many and his courage in following his dreams and making the most of every moment was an inspiration. If you would like to make a donation, please click on this

European Day of Languages

On Thursday it was the European Day of Languages and a variety of activities took place throughout the school to celebrate it. We celebrated our culturally diverse community at Cranmore by speaking as many different languages as possible throughout the day. In House meetings, there were various quizzes about European languages, while at lunch we had Italian mains such as pizza and pasta and Polish apple cake for pudding.

Last weekend saw Cranmore competing across four different sports. Whilst we hosted our annual U8 and U10

On Tuesday, three Cranmore pupils played against St George's school at Foxhills GC in ISGA Cup first round. A closely contest showcased some fantastic golf. On Wednesday, members of our cross Cup relay event, hosted by RGS. This was an event that Cranmore won last year. Our teams of 3 x 4 runners (drawn from Years 7, 8 and 9) competed and performed admirably against approximately 70 other schools from across London and the South East. Congratulations to Daniel B, Ollie W, Henry C and Ben S for coming 2

On Tuesday, 17 Year 10 and Year 11 pupils went to St Teresa's to take part in a joint hockey training session. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience the brand new hockey pitch. The

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

Bible Reading

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Mark 4

Reflection

Sometimes as we journey and move through life we can face storms. These can often take us by surprise. Life can be unpredictable. The Disciples recognise Jesus as Teacher, but after this miracle as more than a Teacher. We too may think we know Jesus. But we must continue to grow in our knowledge of the one who can calm the storms.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

Prayer

Lord, bring peace and calm to the storms I am facing or may face in the future. Remind us all that you are with us and that you control the waters. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.”
