Message from the Headmaster

Congratulations to our Year 10 pupils who spent three days on the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and arrived back to school on Monday afternoon with a great sense of achievement, having completed their qualifying expedition. We had an abundance of activities for all year groups throughout the week with our Year 7 pupils having an opportunity to display their dancing skills with a salsa instructor, the Wind Band and Sax Group playing at T Fest, Year 8 enjoying paintballing, Year 9 having a Personal Finance Management workshop, and Year 10 at Thorpe Park participating in an Engineering workshop.

We had a superb Founder's Day Mass celebration with Fr Charles on Tuesday morning. The pupils showed tremendous reverence throughout the service and the contribution of readers, servers and singers was commendable. Thank you to all the governors and parents who attended.

This weekend we have another highly anticipated event which has been organised by the CPA. The ever-popular CranCamp will take place on the Henderson Fields, I look forward to seeing the pupils and parents enjoying the sleepover at Cranmore – thankfully, the weather is looking favourable.

Year 10 Service and Leadership Initiative

Last Friday, our Year 10 pupils embarked on an ambitious Service and Leadership initiative, where they were deployed around the school in a variety of roles. Pupils supported pupils in Senior classes and taught parts of lessons, supported Lower Prep classes, helped with PE and in the library. Some pupils supported departments such as Finance, IT and Facilities.

We were overwhelmed with positive comments from staff about the boys' conduct, level of initiative and competence on the day and we are really proud of their achievements. It is clear they made a really positive impact on the school and especially our pupils.

Year 10 Service and Leadership Initiative

The Y10 Mental Health Ambassadors visited Limegrove Care Home in East Horsley, as part of their Service and Leadership day. They talked with residents, whilst completing craft activities, and Josh and Aidan performed musical pieces on their instruments. Their engagement was clearly appreciated by the elderly residents and care home staff. I hope the Ambassador team appreciate the positive difference that they can make to others and consider volunteering again; I was extremely impressed with their attentiveness and maturity.

T-Fest

Congratulations to the pupils in the Wind Band and Sax Group who performed brilliantly at T Fest this week. We were blessed with sunshine for this wonderful celebration of musical talent from both Cranmore and St Teresa’s.

Year 8 Paintballing

Hailed by many of the boys on the coach journey back to school as “the best school trip of the year”, Year 8 had a brilliant time paintballing on Thursday. Although we have an exciting last week of term still to look forward to, as our last year group activity, it was a fantastic way to end an action-packed year.

The boys took part in games including ‘Capture the Flag’ and ‘Protect the President’ in a variety of different scenarios.

‘The Ridge’ pitted teams against each other over an area called ‘No man’s land’ which included a complex maze of trenches, dugouts and bunkers. ‘Dodge City’ was set in an authentic Wild West scene and included a jail, blacksmiths, church, bank and saloon.

All teams demonstrated camaraderie, positivity and enthusiasm throughout and I hope they all enjoyed the experience.

Mr McGhee, Head of Year 8

This year, the STEM club has successfully designed a portable noise machine, ‘Dream Wisdom’ to promote mental well-being. They also created a reminder software, ‘MediMate’ to provide timely warnings to individuals with memory issues through ringing. Both projects are intended to be deployed in healthcare settings. ‘Dream Wisdom’ offers relaxation through soothing sounds and uplifting facts, aiding stress relief and mood enhancement.

Here are some of the wonderful comments made by the judging panel of PA Raspberry Pi Competition 2024:

Amazing team, good idea and great execution. Well done team, this is a really cool product. I like how you discussed the engineering challenges in the video, these are the learning points you can take forward into future projects. We enjoyed the video, and the final product fits the initial plan so well done! Very innovative idea and will help relax people when they needcan see people using this. Source code is simple and clear to follow.

We liked the idea of using Pi to create medication reminder via different sounds. Nice calendar interface and clear readme with images. Clear division of roles in the team showing nice teamwork and collaboration. The video was well produced and the end product works really well. Amazing team spirit and passion.

U15s Win against St John's

With a new wicket cut, the Henderson was the fantastic setting for our U15A cricket team against St John's last Saturday. In the T-20 match, St John's batted first and scored 100 runs. A patient and superb technical display from our openers, including Adam H who scored 55 not out, meant that Cranmore started well in their innings to chase down their target. Cranmore managed to reach its target with 3 overs to spare and won the match by 9 wickets.

The U14A and U14B teams won their last cricket matches against King Edwards School Witley. Both were very competitive matches with the matches being decided in the last over. Congratulations to Ben W who scored 56 not out for the U14Bs. In the final U13 matches of the season, all 4 teams won against Danes Hill.

On Monday 24th June, our Senior Golf Team went to the Warwickshire Golf Club to play in the HG Trophy. This is an annual competition competing against some of the best Independent School golfers in the country. The three boys, Daniel D, James O (year 10) and Ollie M (year 9) represented the school fantastically and battled well through hot temperatures, fast greens and unforgiving rough. We look forward to going back next year with another year of experience under our belt.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Pilgrimage

A Reading from the Book of Psalms

"Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

It is good to give thanks to the Lord to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night.

The just will flourish like the palm tree and grow like a Lebanon cedar. Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is no wrong.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Reflection

This week we focus on the religious practice of making a Pilgrimage.

Pilgrimages can bring us closer to God and give us the time and space we need to discover His presence. A pilgrimage is about the journey not just the destination.

Quotation

"In all trouble you should seek God. You should not set Him over against your troubles, but within them. God can only relieve your troubles if you in your anxiety cling to Him. Trouble should not really be thought of as this thing or that in particular, for our whole life on earth involves trouble; and through the troubles of our earthly pilgrimage we find God." ~ Saint Augustine
