Message from the Headmaster

I trust that you all had an enjoyable and, hopefully, restful half term. It has been great to welcome back pupils and staff this week and we are looking forward to the longer and lighter days of the second half of term. Over half term, a number of pupils in Years 9 and 10 travelled to Dubai for an exciting multi-sports tour during which they were able to train at the Sevens Stadium, participating in a wide range of sports.

Earlier this week, our Year 11 pupils impressed our Head of English, Mr Chapman, with their GCSE English presentations covering some interesting and engaging topics. On Thursday, Year 11 GCSE Musicians recorded their ensemble pieces, showcasing their talent and passion for music.

Looking towards the future, our Year 10 pupils and their parents were warmly welcomed at the EST Sixth Form evening on Monday. They were able to learn about the excellent academic and super curricular opportunities in Sixth Form along with the exciting development of additional classrooms, sports facilities and social spaces. On Wednesday, a team of Senior School pupils went to London to participate in the E-Sports competition. Mr Afana reported that they were superb ambassadors for the school throughout the event.

Title: Digital Schoolhouse Esports Tournament 2025 - Splatoon 3

I am delighted to share that our team, "Octasquad," excelled in the UK South East regional qualifier for the Digital Schoolhouse - Splatoon 3 esports competition. After winning the Cranmore heats, they won all seven matches and reached the final, finishing as runners-up. The boys were fantastic ambassadors for the school, showing true sportsmanship throughout.

Congratulations to the boys in Y9 and Y7 for their fantastic achievement!

It was wonderful to welcome so many Year 10 families to our Effingham Sixth Form Open Evening this week. They had the opportunity to explore A-Level options, meet teachers, and hear about our exciting new developments. The evening was a great opportunity for students to ask questions and start planning their future studies!

Dubai Multi-Sports Tour 2025

During half term, pupils in Years 9 and 10 travelled to Dubai for a multi- sports tour. Over the course of the week, the boys trained at the Sevens Stadium and participated in football and cricket matches, water polo, swimming and tennis at the Topspin Academy.

As well as a trip to the Atlantis water park and experiencing the sights of the local Mall, the boys experienced Middle Eastern food and trained under lights to the sound of the call for prayers. The tour ended with a desert safari, driving through the sand and over dunes, and having a desert buffet watching an Arabian dance show with fire eaters as the sun set on their time in Dubai. It was a fabulous experience for everyone involved.

Congratulations to Radford House for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

U13's Success at Worth School

Congratulations to our four U13 hockey teams that travelled to Worth school and went undefeated in their first year group fixtures:

U13A vs Worth school: 2-0

U13B vs Worth school: 3-2

U13C vs Worth school: 1-0

U13D vs Worth school: 0-0

Senior football and hockey fixtures have also taken place this week against Wetherby, Thomas's Putney Vale, St George's and Kings College Wimbledon.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

Bible Reading: A Reading from the Gospel of Luke

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Reflection

This week we are confronted with a challenging message from Jesus. To not just treat other as we would like to be treated but to go a step further and love our enemies. This is certainly against our natural inclinations. Yet the divine nature is greater than our human nature. God loves each of us unconditionally and He looks at each and every one of us with eyes full of love. This week, as we begin to prepare for Lent, may we too be filled with the Divine Spirit and recognise God’s presence within us and within others. Now there’s a challenge. Lord, open the eyes of our hearts.

Prayer

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears

Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
