Message from the Headmaster
While attending an IAPS conference in Liverpool on innovation in education, I listened to recent developments in a range of areas such as Artificial Intelligence, diversity, curriculum change, pupil resilience and wellbeing. I was reassured that Cranmore is excellently placed with our plans, resources and vision for the future in education.
On Tuesday, we celebrated European Day of Languages extending the celebration beyond just Europe to recognise many different languages and cultures. Pupils have been able to participate in a range of activities, competitions and quizzes this week.
Our pupils in Year 10 participated in a study skills session giving them support to start their GCSE courses on the right track. Their feedback about the practical tips they learnt was very positive. I was delighted to welcome parents of Year 7 to the information evening on Wednesday to discuss the impressive progress the pupils have made since joining the Senior school.
Congratulations to the U15 team who are through to the next round of the ISFA football tournament and the U14 squad who qualified for the next stage of the National Cup in rugby. I would also like to commend our U15 and U13 swim squads who competed in the ESSA Secondary School Relays at the Guildford Spectrum. Our pupils also dominated at the annual Haskell Cup cross-country relay, with pupils from years 7, 8 and 9 winning the event. The fixture is one of the major cross-country events in the south-east.
25 SEPTEMBER 2023European Day of Languages
Tuesday 26th September was European Day of Languages. At Cranmore, we had a wide range of activities taking place throughout the day.
The day started with quizzes about Europe within all form groups. At break time, students visited the European photo booth and visited places such as Paris, Barcelona, Rome and many others. The dining hall provided a wonderful pizza for lunch followed by Polish apple cake. During the rest of their lunch break, students chose to attend one of three activities: a Portuguese taster, the Spanish film Coco, and the Swedish challenge.
Ms EbdyYear 10 Elevate Study Skills Session
On Wednesday it was the turn of our year 10 pupils to take part in an Elevate Study session. The session, entitled 'Study Sensei', gave pupils a wealth of skills to support them at a pivotal point in their learning journeys. The tips given were designed to enable maximum retention of topics whilst saving time in the long run. The pupils agreed it was a really good way to help them start their GCSE courses on the right track. The positive feedback from pupils included some very sensible observations, including the following tips: ‘revise consistently as you go’, ‘start revision earlier’, ’use practice papers’, ‘work on notes all year round’, ‘use colour coding and the specification syllabus’, ‘use mind maps and the traffic light system’ and ‘use Google Scholar for research’.
Mr Savvides and Mr Pulford
On Thursday afternoon, our Year 9 and 10 (GCSE Drama) students went to the Yvonne Arnaud theatre in Guildford to see opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, which was thought

Cross Country Team Triumph in Haskell Cup Relay
We triumphed in the Haskell Cup relay event. Our team of four runners (drawn from Years 7, 8 and 9) competed and prevailed against approximately 70 other schools from across London and the South East.
Thanks must go to Miss Moore and Mr Cross for all of the hard work they have put into helping train and prepare the squad.
We will present the boys with their trophies and the cup in Friday’s Senior Assembly. (Photo of our team on the front cover)
Through to the next round of the U15s ISFA (Football) and U14s National Cup (Rugby)
Our U15 Football 1st XI are through to the next round of the ISFA Cup. The team won 4 -1 away at Box Hill and now face Winchester College in the next round. Year 7 and 8 had a block fixture against Downsend.
The U14 1st XV beat Dunottar 35 - 5 in the National Cup with an impressive display on Saturday. The team now face Trinity school in the next round. The U15 1st XV had a great match against Reigate Grammar on Thursday which provided great preparation for their first-round match in the National Cup versus Gordons School.
Our U15 and U13 swim squads competed in the ESSA Secondary School Relays at the Guildford Spectrum on Saturday evening. We are awaiting confirmation for National Qualification.

Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving; for my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways not your ways – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, the heavens are as high above earth as my ways are above your ways, my thoughts above your thoughts.
From the Book of Isaiah
Reflection
This week we focus on the theme of Resilience.
We know there are times when not everything goes to plan. We forget the books we need, we fall out with a friend. Things do go wrong. We may not understand how God can be in those moments. Yet we must have FAITH in Jesus as He has promised to be with us. St Teresa of Ávila put it this way: "Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, Though all things pass, God does not change. Patience wins all things. But he lacks nothing who possesses God; For God alone suffices.”
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be generous: to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek to rest; to labour and to ask for no reward.
