31st OCTOBER 31 OCTOBER 2022 Message from the Headmaster I was delighted to welcome everyone back to Cranmore with renewed energy after the half-term break for what promises to be a busy and exciting second half of term. Just before the break we had a superb Action Day with pupils throughout the Upper Prep and Senior School displaying their individual talents and working on important presentation skills. There were some impressive and entertaining performances that our community used to raise funds for our chosen charity, Action in Africa. I would like to congratulate our U13 team who convincingly won their semi-final match against Feltonfleet to progress to the final of the Surrey Cup. Well done to those involved and I wish you the very best of luck in the final on Friday 18th November. I know we are all looking forward to the CPA fireworks display this weekend on the Henderson Fields. It is a highlight of the Cranmore calendar and promises to be another spectacular event; I look forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow night. Mr Everitt

Action Day My congratulations to all the boys in the Upper Prep and Senior School who displayed their talents at the two Action Days before half-term. From magicians to musicians and actors to readers, there were so many wellrehearsed acts on show. This event was a charity fundraiser and monies raised will be sent to our chosen charity, Action in Africa, who help two communities in Tanzania. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Black History Month Activities Year 7 English class have been studying Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes this half term and have produced some good presentations on aspects of the Civil Rights Movement and other themes relating to police violence that are explored in the books.

Year 7 French also had themed lessons, learning about Black History in relation to the French language. Other classes listened to music important to Black History, such as Scott Joplin’s ragtime piano songs.

Year 9 mathematicians researched, created and shared presentations on eminent contributors to the world of maths and science from the black community.

If you would like to read more about Black History, there is a reading list on the VLE here: What's New - Cranmore VLE - Oracle (fireflycloud.net)

Years 8 & 9 Study Sessions with Elevate Education It isn’t enough that pupils simply understand what they need to do in their study; the challenge is to enable them to use and apply the skills they learn and be self-reflective, as they develop their intellect – our value for the year. Following the very instructive session on Study Skills for Year 7 earlier in the term, two sessions were held for Years 8 & 9 in the week before half term, which have been designed to build upon the input received in previous years. Specifically pupils focused on: Time Management in Year 8 Memory Mnemonics in Year 9

Feedback from pupils was very positive: 97% would recommend the content to other students 95% considered the programme time well spent. Josh provides a summary of the Memory Mnemonics session: I learned many things from the talk today and realised there were several things that I had not been doing before. For example, stick to short sharp sessions where studying for 25 minutes with a 5-minute break will really help the brain focus and not get tired. Another thing I learned is that doing short physical exercises before a working period can be helpful because it gets your blood moving, increases energy as well as productivity. Finally, the use of 5 pile is a great way to study languages. The 5 pile consists of splitting your vocabulary into 5 groups. Once you learn and test yourself on group 1, you move onto group 2 and once you have memorized group 2, you test yourself on groups 1 and 2 before you move onto group 3 and the process repeats until you have reached group 5. Further pupil comments included: “Lots of useful information that I never knew, that I can use straight away” Jack, Yr 9 “The programme was very helpful when revising for exams” William, Yr 9 “Very helpful, learnt a lot: recalling/how to remember things more easily” Billy, Yr 9 “10/10. I learnt to do the homework you dislike the most, first!” Scott, Yr 8 “Very helpful…I learnt to do homework early and make a timetable” Adam, Yr 8 Mr Pulford Deputy Head, Academic

Sports Roundup A huge congratulations to our U13s 1st XI who have made it through to the Surrey Cup Final. The team has had a brilliant cup run and managed to beat Feltonfleet 2-0 in the semi-final on Wednesday. We understand that it was 17 years ago since Cranmore last reached the final of this competition. The other semi-final is still to be played, but the date of the final is Friday 18th November. On the same afternoon that the Surrey Cup was taking place, our other 7 U13 football sides played against Danes Hill. With our 1st XI not available, every Cranmore side played one ability team higher. Therefore, winning 6 out of the 7 matches was a superb achievement. U14s were in action on Tuesday afternoon versus Kingswood House. All 3 sides played at home on a glorious afternoon. Despite going behind in the 2nd XI and 3rd XI matches, Cranmore racked up some impressive wins - 1st XI 6 - 0, 2nd XI 3 - 1, 3rd XI 9 - 3.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

All Saints’ Day

Thought for the week: How will you answer the call to lead a saintly life? A prayer for All Saints’ Day Dear God, thank you for the example of the Saints. I desire to join in their company, worshipping you forever in Heaven. Please help me follow their footsteps, and yours, Jesus Christ. Please help me to conform myself to Your image, seeking Your will in all things, as the Saints did. Please help me to devote myself, and all that I do, to Your glory, and to the service of my neighbours. Amen. REFLECTION Monday marked All Saints’ Day. On this solemn Feast of All Saints, the Church invites us to reflect on the great hope, that is based on Christ’s Resurrection: Christ is risen and we will also be with him. The Saints are the most authoritative witnesses of Christian hope, because they lived it fully in their lives, amidst joys and sufferings, putting into practice the Beatitudes that Jesus preached. Let us answer His call to do the same.

Let us Pray:

Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence

“The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence.” Pope Francis

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
