3 MARCH 2025

Message from the Headmaster

This week, with the visit of NET Ministries, Year 8 pupils took time to reflect on themselves, others and their faith, before the beginning of Lent. I reminded pupils that the term almsgiving over Lent comes from the Greek word for compassion which is one of our school’s core values. No matter how big or small our gift is to others, it is always greatly appreciated. It was an ideal opportunity to decide to create good habits or disciplines that can benefit them or others over the forty-day period and they certainly rose to the challenge.

We also had an author visit this week from Steve Cole and I know the boys thoroughly enjoyed his inspiring journey to becoming a writer. A huge congratulations to the U13 side on winning the Shrewsbury House rugby tournament; I know it was a keenly contested event, and our boys were unrelenting in their attitude to lifting the trophy!

Cole Author Visit for Years 7 and 8

On Tuesday, as part of Book Week, Years 7 and 8 enjoyed a visit from the prolific writer Steve Cole. He has written or co-written over 200 books, including the Swarm Rising and Young Bond series. Steve gave an engaging talk about his journey as a writer and provided inspiration to our pupils about how they can generate their own stories.

I am very pleased to welcome our new Year 7 recruits to our established Eco Commitee; Ryan H, Monty L and William A. We met with Louise from Harrisons to discuss important ecological aspects of our lunches. This included the rewording of the menu to elevate the status of making a vegetarian choice, phasing out of the disposable fruit/yoghurt cups and finding out more about where the food waste goes. We were pleased to learn that much of the leftover food is used in soups, salads and as pudding toppers the next day as well as the investment in a composter. Our next challenge is to combat the problem of waste on plates by re-introducing new posters to remind pupils to consider their appetite when collecting their lunch. It was a really valuable experience and we felt listened to by Harrisons.

Congratulations to Bowen House for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

Year 8 Retreat

On Monday 3rd March a group of young missionaries from NET Scotland spent the day leading a Retreat Day with Year 8. It was a great day during which pupils grew in their knowledge of Prayer and Faith. There was time for fun activities, dramas and small group discussions. Throughout the day, Cranmore pupils encountered the person of Jesus through the missionaries and simply enjoyed getting to know them a little more. Roll on next year where we hope to do the same again.

U13 Shrewsbury House Rugby 7s Winners

Huge congratulations to our U13s rugby side for winning the Shrewsbury House 7s tournament. Having being placed in the toughest pool, the team took a couple of matches to play their best rugby. But, having qualified for the medal draw, Cranmore went on to beat St John's Leatherhead, Thomas's Battersea and Rokeby and were crowned winners. Well done to all who were involved!

The U14s and U16s rugby 7s sides were in action at the Surrey 7s this week, and the U14 hockey side had a great 2-2 draw with Reeds. Tomorrow, four U13 hockey teams face Feltonfleet and the U15s and U16s play St John's Leatherhead.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians

Never have grudges against others, or lose your temper, or raise your voice to anybody, or call each other names, or allow any sort of spitefulness. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving each other as readily as God forgave you in Christ. Try, then, to imitate God as children of his that he loves and follow Christ, loving as he loved you.

Reflection

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent; we had our service this week. For many, our first reaction when we hear Lent is to ask, ‘What are you giving up?’ with the usual answer being sweets, chocolate, cake and other treats. This is often the way we introduce the idea to young children, but perhaps, as we grow, our understanding of Lent should also grow.

During Lent we are asked to do three things, to and to give. We are encouraged to reflect with deep honesty about three possible areas of our lives on which we could focus our hearts and minds this Lent.

By focusing in this way, we can make sure that we use this season of Lent to leave behind that which hinders us, and to work towards becoming the people we are called to be. Have a good Lent!

Prayer

Lord,

as we begin this holy season of Lent, may we turn back to you with all our hearts, in prayer, in fasting, and in giving alms to the poor; that our sins be forgiven and our hearts mended.

Amen
