School Photos - May 26

Full school photos are scheduled for Thursday, 26 May. Ordering of photos will be done online. Details as to how to order photos will be given to each student this week. The photographer Arthur Reed Photos will also provide the opportunity for family photos. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform for the photos, if a student has PE or related activity they will need to bring their PE uniform to school and change from their uniform. Students who will/may be absent on the 26th will have the opportunity to have their photo taken at the catch up day on June 2. Robert Blackley Deputy Principal (Students) With us entering into May, the cold weather returns. Please reinforce with your children that Winter uniform requires the Blazer to be the outer garment to and from school. Our Year 7 & 9 students have started their NAPLAN testing well. Students are simply encouraged to do their best and not be stressed about the tests. One important reminder is for all students to have their own calculator for Thursday’s Numeracy session. Bacchus Marsh Bus Transport Thanks to students and parents on their feedback on the new arrangements. We have contacted Bacchus Marsh Coaches about clarifications required on their Timetables and we are sure the system will be refined and continue to improve. We realise that this may inconvenience some families but the College will continue to support any plan that ensures student can travel safely to and from the College and have a seat. I have been in contact with the Public Transport Victoria representative and they confirmed that they will not authorise an extra bus (which is what we would like) until the current ones are operating at or near capacity. To support this we need to ensure students catch the bus that is located closest to them (not just the latest bus) and use their Myki Cards (as this provides data to PTV on bus numbers). There has been a concern raised with the College in that a large number of students are getting off the Bacchus Marsh bus and crossing the freeway bridge to get to Darley. We urge families not to use this practice under normal circumstances. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Help CRC Melton win Sports Equipment! The Year 10 Girls’ Volleyball team will be competing in the Volleyball Victoria Schools Cup on Friday, May 27. The team has been nominated to compete for volleyball equipment which would benefit all volleyball played at the College. To improve our chances of winning over $1000 of equipment, the team must receive a high number of votes. We are asking the College community to support this nomination by clicking on the link below, selecting our College Volleyball team and clicking on the vote button. To vote, you will need to register first which will take just a few seconds. http://www.thermoskin.com/community-sports-fund/browse/category/under-50s-team/P40 Details of the Term 2 Volleyball Development Program, open to all, will be in the next newsletter. Thank you for your support. Michael Hill Languages News We are pleased to announce that we have 5 girls accompanied by a male teacher arriving at our school on Monday 18th July until Thursday 11th August from our sister school, Convitto Nazionale Paolo Diacono in Udine, North of Italy. We are asking for families who would like to host a student to please email Mrs. Claudia Russo crusso@crcmelton.com.au as soon as possible. This would be a great opportunity for your families to learn a foreign language and acquire some knowledge about Italy as well. Thanks so much for your support in advance. On Wednesday 22nd June all Year 8 students are attending a Languages excursion. Students studying Italian will visit the Calabria Club in Bulla and the Indonesian students will travel to the Royal Melbourne Zoo. Please ensure that you have accepted the permission letter via Care Monkey by 25/5/2016 to ensure your child's attendance on this day. Thank you, the Languages Team. Celebration Day 2016

On the 17th of May we will be holding our annual Celebration Day, where students will attend mass in the morning and then come back to school where there will be fun games and activities for the students to enjoy to help raise funds for our chosen charities. Normal buses will not operate in the morning from Bacchus Marsh. Buses will bring students to the College after Masses at St Anthony’s and St Bernard’s. Buses will operate as normal at the end of the day. Celebration day is a day where we can all celebrate being a part of the CRC federation and acknowledge our faith. So as a part of our faith we need to help those less fortunate and fundraise more money than we have every raised before. We are aiming to raise $10,000 this year. This week, early bird wristbands will be on sale for $10 to students out the front of the library. They will then be on sale for $15 the week of Celebration Day and on Celebration Day from 10.30-11.30am. Wristbands will entitle the students to unlimited rides, banner making and entrance to the DJ set. For prices of food please refer to the Celebration Day menu, which will be released shortly, as the canteen will be closed on the day. We are welcoming back the Darley General Store and Cuppa4U again this year. This year the funds raised will be shared between our school in Kenya, Br Beausang; Headspace, helping youth with mental health (www.headspce.org.au); and Wild Timor Water Project, who make fresh water available to rural communities in East Timor (www.wildtimorcoffee.com/programs.html). Also many of the new ideas present this year have come from our Student Leadership Team, as they have been working tirelessly to make this event possible. This year we will have four exciting rides: · The Spin Out - A carnival ride that uses centrifugal force to push students back in their seats. · The Fireman’s Challenge - An inflatable firetruck where students climb up the pole and slide down into the front of the fire truck. · The Footy Challenge - An inflatable obstacle course where students compete against each other. · A giraffe jumping castle for Year 7 and 8 students only. All rides are provided by Action Events (www.actionevents.com) Other activities: · DJ: this year the DJ will be students who have won the DJ competition. Winners receive a JB Hifi Voucher and a DJ set time. · Talent Show: Students showcase their talents and are in the chance to win one of 3 Woodgrove vouchers. · Banner Making: A large painted tree where students decorate a leaf that is attached to the tree. The banner will be displayed in the hall. · 3 point contest: Students sign up in teams and compete in a 3 point basketball competition. · Tape the teacher/student : For a gold coin donation students and teachers can buy a length of tape to try and suspend a teacher or student on a wall. · Lab Party: The computer labs will be open for students to compete in a gaming competition. · Community stalls : We have many local and national community stalls coming to talk to students about how they can use their resources or get involved in social justice activities outside of school. · Busking: As part of SAC Performance Assessment the VET Music class will be performing. There will be 3 performances running simultaneously in three different locations: Emmaus Walk (between the Hall & the PAC), behind the Hall (between the food room & the external hall stairs), and the Music Garden (in front of the Music Foyer). There will be a mixture of styles: Psychedelic Rock, Jazz, Music Theatre, Contemporary Ballads, Heavy Rock, just to name a few. Come along and support the VET Music Students and bring along some coins to throw in their hats. All donations will help to support Brother Beausang and other charities. We would like parents/guardians to be aware that some of the rides and activities may not be suitable for students with asthma, heart conditions, epilepsy, anxiety, vertigo and low blood pressure. If you have any queries please contact Sue Davie in the office.

Year 9 Science Incursion

On 27th April all of the Year 9 students attended a Forensics science incursion, which involved solving a crime scene. We used various skills and information to solve the crime, including fingerprints, text messages, blood, clothing, and the position the victim was found in. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, as trying to solve this crime meant following the process of finding the murderer when there were many suspects and theories. Eventually, after all the tests had been completed, we put all of our information together to see who the murderer was. Everyone was on there feet completing activities and role-playing out the murderer scene. This was an amazing incursion that our year level was lucky to participate in and have a different learning experience. All of the Year 9’s would like to thank everyone who put the day together and the Forensics team who put on an amazing workshop for our year level. Tahlia Coulson & Alannah Morrow – Year 9 Students Year 11 Reflection Day On Tuesday, 26th April the Year 11 cohort was addressed by an amazing young woman, Michelle Newland. Michelle an ex-student of CRC St Albans & Sydenham suffered a severe asthma attack 14 years ago when only 19 years of age. She stopped breathing for 10 minutes and according to doctors would be in a vegetative state for the remainder of her life. She was fed through a tube for 6 years, had to learn to walk and talk again and aspire to become independent. How Michelle, with her family's incredible efforts, managed to defy all the medical profession's expectations was the subject of her address. Our Year 11’s have witnessed how setbacks in life can be overcome one small step at a time. Shaun Coates Religious Education & Faith Development Coordinator Zoo Excursion On Monday May 2nd 32 Year 7 Integrated Studies MASP students visited the Melbourne Zoo for the S.O.S 10 Educational Experience. The students’ were challenged to visit the displays for the following 10 animals; Tasmanian Devil, Helmeted Honeyeater, Baw Baw Frog, Lord How Island Stick Insect, Seal, Orangutan, Gorilla, Philippines Crocodile and Lion. They were encouraged to speak with the keepers and attend an education session exploring the threats that face each of the animals. The day concluded with the students’ selecting one animal to lend their voice to and therefore save. The group thoroughly enjoyed the experience and represented the College values very well.
