Cabaret Restaurant All those who attended the Cabaret Restaurant last week would agree with me that it was a fabulous event. We had a multitude of colour and costume, song and dance, excellent food and service - overall an outstanding event!

2014 Subject Selections

Cancer Council Fundraising

Thanks to all families for supporting their students in their 2014 subject selections. I hope to have initial Year 12 Subject allocations ready to go home next week.

Other year level confirmation letters will be sent home next term.

Joshua Pace-Rinaldo of 8 O’Reilly is showing his compassion for others by shaving his head to raise money for the Victorian Cancer Council. The shave will take place on Thursday 19th September at the College.

Term 3 Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews take place this Wednesday, September 11 after school and on Thursday, September 12 from 1pm to 7.30pm. Thursday is a student free day. Interviews will take place in R Block (Year 7, 8 & 10 Homeroom Teachers) and J-Block (Year 9, 11 & 12 Homeroom Teachers). Lists will be available in both venues. Parents may also be asked to complete a College survey during these times.

End of Term 3

Researchers from The Royal Children's Hospital will be visiting Year 7 and 8 at CRC Melton on Thursday 19th September as part of the "SchoolNuts" program.

Researchers are investigating food allergy, anaphylaxis and asthma - why are these conditions increasing and how do they impact children and adolescents? Even if your child does not have an allergy, your participation will help researchers answer these important questions.

The last day of Term 3 is Friday, September 20. The College will finish at 2.30pm. Bacchus Marsh Coaches will operate at earlier times to suit this but SITA coaches will run to their normal town service times. I ask that families of students that normally catch the SITA bus make other arrangements for this day wherever possible. These students will also be reminded of this through Bus Duty teachers.

Tablet Devices for Year 9 Students All Year 9 students will be given the opportunity to lease Windows Tablets from the start of next term. These devices will be used by our current Year 9 students to the end of their Year 12 year. Information on the tablets will be available at a booth in J Bock during P-S-T Interviews. Full details including lease contracts will be mailed home during the break.

John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Medical Forms Currently there are a substantially large amount of unreturned ‘Parent & Consent forms’ for 2013.

Repeated attempts have been made to parents with a request to check, sign and return the forms.

Until forms are returned, student’s with missing forms will be excluded from excursions.

A donation of any sum will be appreciated. Many of us have been affected by cancer and this really is a great way to assist those people in need. Well done Joshua!

SchoolNuts allergy research is coming to CRC Melton

All Year 7 and 8 students will be invited to complete a questionnaire if they have parental consent. Upon completion students will take part in an education session with allergy nurses from The Royal Children's Hospital. An information sheet and consent form has been sent home with your child. Please complete the consent form via one of the following methods: Online: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CONSENTSCHOOLNUTS-QUESTIONNAIRE Hardcopy – return the consent form to your child’s school or post it directly to MCRI Even if your child does not have a food allergy we encourage you to complete and return the forms as this will provide invaluable information which may help future children with an allergy.

Student Welfare-Mental Health Issues R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to encouraging all Australians to ask family, friends and colleagues ‘Are you OK?‘ The day is held on the second Thursday of September (12 September in 2013).

Kids Helpline is an important service for children and young people seeking information and support relating to mental health issues.

R U OK? Day is designed to target the whole population, to help all people understand the role they can play in supporting those grappling with a problem, big or small.

Most people don’t openly share their feelings, particularly if they are struggling. The best thing we can all do is regularly talk to the people we care about.

Schools are often the hub of a community and an important place for connection. Attached to this week’s newsletter is additional information on RU OK? Day. Young people who possess sound social and emotional skills are generally better able to cope with the stressors of daily life. They also tend to have better relationships with parents, teachers and peers, and perform better academically. Very importantly, having these skills makes it less likely that a young person will experience significant mental health problems in the future.

Mental health is a major issue for populations living in the most developed countries of the world and is the second main reason (after abuse and violence) for children and young people contacting child helplines from countries ranked in the top nine of the Human Development Index (HDI).

Mental health and mental illnesses are determined by multiple and interacting social, psychological, and biological factors. Being mentally healthy involves much more than just not having a mental illness. Being mentally healthy indicates a mind that embraces positive attitudes rather than negativity – a state of wellbeing in which a person can manage the normal stresses of life, be productive and contribute to their communities and form meaningful relationships. Children and young people who are not nurtured effectively nor given the opportunities they need to successfully develop their emotional as well as physical and social lives, will find it difficult to get the most out of life. Polling Day Sausage Sizzle: A Big thank – you Last Saturday as the school opened its doors for the election, we ran a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Kenyan Immersion team.

It was a very successful day. The weather held off and the queue waiting to vote was subjected to the aromas of cooked onions and snags. They had no way of resisting. Thanks to those that came along and gave a helping hand on Saturday and to those that bought a sausage or drink. We managed to cook up 374 sausages, bacon and egg sandwiches and sold lots of soft drinks and chocolates, an amazing effort by all.

A special thanks must go to those that supported us with donations; The Parents and Friends Committee who donated $500.00, Bakers Delight for 20 loaves of bread and 10 packets of rolls, The Red Apple company for their donations of onions and lettuces and also to D & S Butchers in Woodgrove for their donation of 5Kg of sausages.
