11th November, 2014 Reflection We Remember We remember the lives lost of so many people that have been lost in war. We acknowledge the presence of God the Father, to whose great love we entrust their souls. Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12-13) O God, our ruler and guide, in whose hands are the destinies of this and every nation. We give you thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in this land and for those who laid down their lives to defend them. We pray that we and all the people of Australia, gratefully remembering their courage and their sacrifice, may have grace to live in a spirit of justice, generosity and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever, Amen.

Political Law

Out of school incidents In recent weeks incidents have occurred at the weekends or after school hours that have ended up causing tension, stress, fallout and unhappiness in the schoolyard. It has been disturbing to hear what has been happening and prompted us to work with outside agencies and organisations such as Victoria Police and Melton Youth Services to continue to educate students on what is appropriate and respectful behaviour. As a College we look for the support of parents and carers to help educate our students. Two such matters I wish to bring to your attention are Safe Partying/underage drinking and Sexting Laws. Safe Partying/underage drinking Underage drinking is a fairly common occurrence in Victoria and influenced by a range of factors. Parents play a critical and key role in introducing children to alcohol and also in discouraging early or excessive use. In Australia parents are the main source of alcohol for young people. Alcohol use is particularly risky for young people. The longer children delay the initiation of alcohol use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it. That is why it is important that parents encourage their children to avoid or limit the use of alcohol. Laws in Victoria make it an offence for adults to supply alcohol to a minor (a person under the age of 18 years) in a private home without parental consent. Adults who break the law face fines over $7,000. It is not the threat of being fined that should govern your decision as to whether alcohol is supplied but what is the impact if you allow a minor to drink alcohol. These laws have been introduced in light of the latest scientific evidence of the negative impacts of alcohol consumption on adolescent development. Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol' state that:  Children under 15 years of age are at the greatest risk of harm from drinking.  Not drinking in this age group - under 15 years is especially important.  For young people aged 15 to 17 years, the safest option is to delay drinking for as long as possible. There are many good reasons to encourage your teenager not to drink alcohol before turning 18. Early drinking is related to increased alcohol consumption in adolescence and young adulthood. These drinking patterns are also related to the possibility of damage to the developing brain and development of alcohol related harms in adulthood. There is no safe limit!

Providing your son/daughter with alcohol for parties and gatherings increases the likelihood that they will misuse alcohol. Do not allow your son/daughter to attend a party that is not adequately supervised. If you decide to let your son/daughter attend, get the name and number of the responsible adult who will be supervising the party. Make sure your son/daughter has a safe ride with a responsible adult to and from the party. If you organise a party you need to be vigilant in supervision and ask yourself does alcohol need to be provided or allowed to be brought to the party. A recent study conducted by The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre of 2000 teenagers found that one in six were given alcohol by their parents, mainly just sips, at age 12 and 13. By age 15 and 16 more than a third of teenagers were given alcohol by their parents, with 21 per cent given sips and 15 per cent given full serves. Overall, 29 per cent of teenagers were drinking full serves by age 15 and 16 - half of them obtaining alcohol from other sources such as older friends and siblings. The researchers found that 15 and 16-year-olds who were given alcohol by their parents at age 12 and 13 were three times more likely to be drinking full serves than those whose parents had not given them alcohol. Study chief investigator Richard Mattick, of the University of NSW-based drug and alcohol centre, said the findings debunked the myth that allowing children to have small amounts of alcohol at home would moderate their drinking in years to come. He said many parents supplied alcohol to their teenagers "with the best of intentions - to introduce alcohol in a safe, supervised environment with the aim of moderating a child's drinking". Instead, Professor Mattick said the study found that "early parental supply of alcohol through school Years 7 to 9 was the single biggest predictor of drinking in Year 10. "It was more influential than family circumstances, individual psychological risk factors and peers." New Sexting Laws

Movember Campaign

You may have recently read that the Victorian Government has introduced a new scheme to deal with sexting. The laws update the current legislative regime in line with modern technology and social practices whilst protecting the future of children who may otherwise have fallen foul of the current laws.

This year the Student Leadership team continued the tradition of Movember, as many students and staff have been effected by Prostate Cancer. Last Friday the 7th of November the Year 11 Leaders and Year 10 - 7 SRC leaders worked together on this campaign, selling badges, moustaches and face painting. Including the Bow Tie Wearing Day last term, we have raised $370. These funds will be presented to Prostate Cancer Victoria at our next assembly.

Sexting between students is a common threat to cyber-safety in schools. ‘Sexting’ is a term used to describe the creating, sharing, sending or posting of sexually explicit messages or images via the internet, mobile phones or other electronic devices by people, especially young people. In this current era of smartphones, sending a sexual image is easily enabled by apps such as SnapChat, Kik and Tinder. New sexting laws were passed in Victorian Parliament in the last week of October, which mean under 18s will no longer be found guilty of child pornography offences or placed on the sex offender register if they send or receive consensual, non-exploitative texts. Two new offences have been created which apply to the distribution of images of people without their consent, and the distribution of images of anyone under the age of 18, allowing appropriate recourse for victims. VCE Dance Solo Performances

Year 10 Reflection Day

On Friday 31st October the Unit 2 dance students performed their Solo Outcome to an audience of 60. The students had been working on their solo compositions for the last 6 weeks and successfully created dances that had a clear expressive intention as well as incorporating all movement criteria.

Once again the annual Year 10 reflection day was a tremendous success. Chris Doyle brought an energetic and positive environment with him, producing an open and carefree atmosphere. The day provided an opportunity for students to reflect about their time at CRC Melton as well as themselves as individuals. Chris allowed each individual to put everything in perspective and focus on what are the positive influences in life. Activities were set up to target self confidence, life choices and love. Multiple points were made involving the chosen topics but the two standouts were to "surround yourself with positive people" and "it doesn't matter what other people think". Tempest Ardley

Growing Junior Tall Poppies Program From the 22nd-25th of September, I was one out of ten Victorian students selected to engage in the Growing Junior Tall Poppies program. When I'd received the email stating that I'd won this experience, I was surprised and ecstatic. Knowing that such an amazing experience awaited me; I couldn't wait! Throughout the week, we visited a range of different laboratories. One of these was a robotics lab, in which we programmed small Lego cars to drive via computer coding. Another lab that we visited was the Metabolomics lab, in which Dr. Daniel Dias showed us how to snap-freeze capsicum using liquid nitrogen in order to identify key compounds within the capsicum. The final lab that we visited was an optics lab, in which lasers were being observed as they hit a wide range of lenses and mirrors. However, it wasn't all fun and games. The purpose of this experience was to find ways to promote Science to younger students, mainly Years 7-9. I have created a poster which outlines the concepts of this program, which I will hopefully present to these students in order to show them how Science can be used in the real world. This will hopefully impact their subject selections as they enter senior school. In addition to these excellent opportunities, an eminent scientist/mathematician will be assigned to our school, in order to help the students with their studies - and promote Science as well. I will also have to select five other students to do this program with me next year, during a week to be mutually determined. This won't be my final article. There will be more to come, so stay tuned! Matthew Previti Care Monkey We encourage parents to have details of both parents as emergency contacts in Care Monkey.

Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award Earlier this year Mr Sheenan was asked to nominate a Year 10 and a Year 12 Student for the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award. This award recognises a student who demonstrates great leadership and teamwork within the school and also in the broader community. This student displays strong values, respect for others and is always willing to accept new challenges, characteristics that are highly valued in Australian society. Congratulations and well done Kitty Robinson (Year 10) and Amelia Williamson (Year 12). Lydia Jovanovic Year 10 Coordinator
