11th October, 2016 Reflection A Prayer for all Ages God of all creation, you are timeless and beyond all ages. We who are growing old give thanks for the years you have given us – for family, friends and all those who have enriched our lives. We who are not yet old give thanks for the older people in our lives: for grandparents, loved ones, friends and all who generously offer the wise counsel of their years. We who are growing old pray that we may be patient with our ageing limbs and difficulties in everyday tasks we once did much more easily. We who are not yet old pray for patience and kindness towards those who do not move as quickly as we would sometimes like. We who are growing old pray for good health in our later years, and forbearance when our health fails us. We who are not yet old pray for good health for those we love and compassion towards those who suffer ill health. We who are growing old pray for prudence and sweet timing, in offering our wisdom to the next generation, while respecting their energy and creativity. We who are not yet old pray for openness and humility in receiving the advice and guidance of our elders. We who are growing old pray that we may face our death with serenity and dignity. We who are not yet old pray that we affirm the sacredness of each person’s life and accompany those who are dying with gentleness and deep respect. God of endless love, help us to understand that we share a common life journey, a call to live life to the full and to strive to enable all creation to come to the fullness of the Cosmic Christ. Amen

Farewell Year 12s We truly know the end of year is approaching with the last week of Year 12 classes now with us. Students will be on SWOT Vac from Wednesday, October 18 to Tuesday, October 25. VCAA exams begin on Wednesday, October 26 until Friday, November 18. Students need to be at the College at least 30 minutes before the exam published reading time to ensure smooth entry into the exam venues. Students may wear casual clothes. 2017 Subject Selections Current Year 8 and 9 students will be interviewed this week to finalise their Year 9 / 10 electives for 2017. 2017 Year 9 and 10 initial confirmation letters will then be sent home with the students. Year 7 – 11 Assessment In next week’s newsletter we will publish key assessment dates for our Year 7 – 11 students. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Year 9 Gadal News! Over the school holidays our Year 9 students did many different things; some travelled, some stayed home and lounged around and others participated in sporting competitions. One of our Year 9 students competed in the World Field Archery Championships held in Wagga Wagga during the school holidays. This championship is held every two years and at this year’s event, more than 555 Archers, from 16 different countries attended. The last competition was held in the USA and the next competition is scheduled to be held in South Africa. The opening ceremony was held on Sunday 25th September with competition starting on Monday 26th. The closing ceremony and presentation were held on Friday 30th September. Joshua Hartley of 9 Catherine was a competitor at this event. The ages of the competitors ranged from ten years old up to seventy. Both males and females were well represented at this championship. Joshua made friends with people from the national team as well as overseas competitors. He has made a long-life friendship connection with a South African competitor where, as in most international sporting events, sporting items were exchanged. Joshua shared the following experience with us: ‘Each day archers were spread over four courses of 28 targets each. We competed between 5-7 hours per day. Unfortunately, due to the courses being outdoors and having many slopes and hills, extreme weather flooded parts of some of the courses. This left slopes slippery and was deemed too dangerous to compete on Thursday and Friday of this week. Awards were based on the first three days of competition’. Joshua competed in the 13-16 year old age category and achieved an excellent result. He was ranked number 2 in his division. Congratulations to both Joshua and his father for their efforts. They should be extremely proud of their achievements and we wish them luck for any future competitions that they may have planned to attend. Joshua Hartley (9C) and David Hartley (Dad)

Year 9 Community Service

On 7th September we went to St. Catherine's and played some literacy games with the Grade 1s. We played vowel and syllable bingo in groups, then they individually read their books to us. I was very impressed with how the students read, they were very cute and have a lot of humour. They were all excited and willing to listen to what we had to say and ready to impress us with every chance they could. Lillian Brewis, Megan Xerri, Alannah Morrow, Fiona Lien and Lara Clarke

Animal shelter - 14th September We learnt how to properly take care of animals, especially kangaroos, wombats, chickens, possums and lambs. We bottle-fed the joeys - Nash, Joey, Mia and we met Bindi the one footed kangaroo. We collected eggs and gave the chickens a mix of fruit and bread, and learnt that possums really love rose petals.
