11th September 2012 Reflection A Prayer in Spring Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today; and give us not to think so far away as the uncertain harvest; keep us here all simply in the springing of the year. Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white, like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night; and make us happy in the happy bees, the swarm dilating round the perfect trees. And make us happy in the darting bird that suddenly above the bees is heard, the meteor that thrusts in with needle bill, and off a blossom in mid air stands still. For this is love and nothing else is love, the which it is reserved for God above to sanctify to what far ends He will, but which it only needs that we fulfil. (Robert Frost)

As Term 3 draws to a close it is a good opportunity to acknowledge all the achievements and activities our students have been involved in this term. There are many opportunities for students to be involved in a range of extra curricular activities across the school. Last week the school community presented Cabaret, it was my first time and I was so impressed and amazed by the commitment of the students and staff. Everyone is to be congratulated for putting together the show, the preparation, cooking and serving of the food. Students who spent hours in rehearsals and in the food technology rooms in the lead up to the shows, in whatever capacity and involvement , all did a great job. On the 11th of August CRC sent 6 of our best distance runners and 4 staff to join with 85,000 runners in the world’s biggest community run. Sydney’s fourteen kilometre City to Surf Race. Kaitlyn Staindl, Jordan Morrison, Lincoln Gardner, Nick Benca, Jessica Borysiak and Ally James along with Mrs Clinton, Ms Wright, Ms Brown and Mr McCann all took part in the run. The report below is from Mr McCann: All trips come with their share of excitement, setbacks and challenges. This trip was no exception! From the moment we found out our plane was delayed on Saturday due to storms along the east coast of Australia, to missing our ground transport in Sydney, to substandard accommodation in Bondi, freezing weather conditions and noisy backpackers in our hotel Saturday was a day to we will all never forget! It shall forever be known as Shocking Saturday!

After a less than good nights sleep we all awoke to Super Sunday. A day that will be forever in our memories as a truly wonderful day! After a light breakfast we caught the bus into Sydney. The conversation revolved around the times that we were going to run, the steepness of Heartbreak Hill, getting lost in the crowd and who would beat whom across the finish line. After a few last instructions and wishes of good luck we all headed off to our start areas. The start is always amazing! Having to watch where you run, people cutting you off, some trying to charge through the pack and others just trying to find some clear space the first 3 kilometres just fly past. So much goes on throughout the race that you forget that you are actually running. Once you settle in you start to take in the atmosphere! Bands were playing all along the course, Smurfs were giving out high fives and there were so many little kids cheering their mums and dads while being looked after by their Grandparents, and there were drink stations every 2 kilometres with people cheering on the runners. Just so much to take in that it was easy to forget your number one goal: pass as many other CRC runners as possible! Before you know it Heartbreak Hill has come and gone and you are heading for Bondi to be cheered on by thousands of people as you complete that last 2 kms. Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews A reminder that Thursday 13th September will be a student free day.

All of our runners crossed the line with smiles on their faces and vowed they were coming back in 2013. They had achieved their goals and vowed to go faster next year! My thanks go to the Benca family who sponsored our travel hoodies. Karen and George were a great help in the lead up to our trip and made our experience easier to organise. Thanks also to Mrs Jo Clinton, Ms Emma Wright and Ms Emma Brown for their support leading up to and in Sydney. Finally thanks to Kath, Jess McCann and John’s nephew, Tom McCann who came to our rescue when our accommodation did not quite come up to the necessary standards.

The last day of Term 3 is Friday, September 21. The College will finish at 2.30pm. Bacchus Marsh Coaches will operate at earlier times to suit this but SITA coaches will run to their normal town service times. I ask that families of students that normally catch the SITA bus make other arrangements for this day wherever possible. These students will also be reminded of this through Bus Duty teachers.

Zumba Zumba

On Thursday 30th and Friday 31st August Zumba sessions were held at lunchtime in the hall for all students to participate. The response to the fitness sessions yet again was wonderful, with over 100 students participating in the program. Zumba is a great way for students to exercise and have fun with their peers. Thank you to Ashlee Hughes for organising the event and Lisa Hughes the Zumba instructor.

Kenyan Immersion Program 2013

Year 10 Hospitality - Cabaret 2012 - Thank You

CRC are excited to be sending 8 students to Brother Beausang Education Centre, Kenya at the end of Term 1 next year.

During last Wednesday and Thursday, as well as the lead up preparation day of Tuesday, I had to keep reminding myself that I was working with Year 10 students. Of course with any event, there were a few glitches, however I know the level of presentation and quality of the Cabaret meals were high.

Bryce Robinson, Celina Laurilla, Irene Fernandes, Corey Ferdinand, Ella Blight, Julia Sansone, Annika Miesen and Adhieu Tat. Each of these students went through an extensive selection process and will be representing our school. We have been committed to raising funds for Brother Beausang over a number of years. Our most recent goal is to raise $6000 for a playground at the new Primary School site. A number of fundraising activities have already taken place – the tally is currently sitting at $1220. Our next event will be on Friday 14th September where students are encouraged to “Go Bare”. They are to go without items we believe to be basic necessities such as hair products, deodorant, iPod, mobile etc. Ribbons will be sold on the day for $2, all money will go towards the playground. Those who choose to “Go Bare” will be asked to donate a gold coin. Friday the 21st September will be “Footy Fever” day where all students are encouraged to wear a scarf or beanie representing their favourite footy team. All those who choose to participate will be asked to donate a gold coin. This money will go towards the costs of airfares to send both staff and students to Kenya. We look forward to your continued support for both Brother Beausang and the student immersion program. For more information please visit “Kenyan Immersion Project” on Facebook. From the Kenyan Immersion Management Team Unit 3 & 4 Food Technology The students in VCE Food Technology, Units 3 & 4 have been busy finalising their final products which will be presented in their portfolio as part of Unit 4. They made a variety of items depending on the theme of their Design Brief which included Marie Antoinette, Colours and an Indian wedding feast! Food products ranged from macaroons, red velvet cakes, lemon curd tart and Indian breads. I have been so impressed with their creativity and development of skills. No doubt all their hard work will be most helpful when studying and completing the final year exam. Monica Bloetz VCE Food Technology Teacher

Thanking everyone involved is not possible however to not thank the Food Assistants would be unforgivable. Jill Geurts just finished her 23rd year assisting, planning, ordering and providing invaluable guidance for the leading teacher and students. Without Jill’s hard work behind the scenes it would not go ahead. She has some great stories to tell. As for Sandra Hill, her calm, consistent, hard working and helpful approach to students and staff kept all of us on track. Thank you to the many staff who worked for hours after a full day at school, washing and drying the hundreds of dishes and glasses. (We were also blessed with two volunteer parents in Mrs Lowen and Mrs Orr ). Thank you Mrs Hunter and Mrs Thurn for providing a gentle guiding hand on the nights with the Hospitality students, when I couldn’t be in two places at once. Your help was priceless. Mr McGonegal and the VCAL students for shopping for us; VCAL kids get things done. The maintenance department for the curtains and table and chair lugging! To the art department (Mrs Griffin, Mrs Hunter and Miss Jones) for the hall foyer’s beautiful display of CRC Melton’s brilliant art students’ work (I loved the pumpkins) and to Mrs La Rose and Mrs Rowley for the posters, tickets and creative menus. Of course the office staff brilliantly and happily organised the selling of the tickets and took care of all the finances. A thank you must go out to the Performing Arts department especially Miss Hughes and Mrs O’Sullivan for their cooperation and team work. For behind the scenes, doing all odds and ends for students and staff alike was Ms Matthews. Last but not least, there is no point producing excellent food if there is no one to serve it. Therefore a huge thank you to Mrs Rowe-Watts and her waiting students, who not only looked the part but produced an exciting, and welcoming restaurant ambiance, as well as serving in such style and grace. What a brilliant forum Cabaret is, not only for the performing arts students (who were beyond wonderful, talented, beautiful and entertaining), but for the Hospitality and waiting students. That’s what education is all about, experiencing real world scenarios! To do is to learn. Monica Bloetz Year 10 Hospitality Teacher (a very proud one!)
