12th August, 2014 Reflection The Transfiguration ‘We were there when he was given honour and glory by God the Father, when the voice came to him from the Supreme Glory, saying, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased!” We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts.’ (2 Peter 1:17-19) Illuminating God, in the scalding light of Hiroshima we have seen our power to destroy; now show us ourselves in the fullness of your radiant image and will, in the shining face of your son, Jesus, transfigured on the holy mountain, through whom we pray. Grant that by our living in your Spirit, we may radiate your love to all. Amen.

College Athletics Carnival Thanks to all students who attended our College Athletics Carnival yesterday. After a cloudy start the sun shone and all participating students enjoyed themselves and produced great performances. A special thanks to our Year 12 students who added colour and extra fun to the day. Results of the day will be included in a future newsletter.

2015 Subject Selections Year 10 and 11 students have now submitted their initial subject selections. We will now look at blocking these selections and allocating students to classes where possible. Before the end of term, students will be given an initial 2015 Subject Allocation based on their preferences and reserves. Year 9 students’ need to submit their Year 10 2015 subject selections by Thursday, August 21. A reminder that the Year 10 2015 Subject Handbook is available through the College Website (under Teaching & Learning Tab / Year 10 tab).

Parent Information Evening - Student Motivation July 29 Two weeks ago we offered a parent evening presented by motivation coach Darren Pereira. 40 parents attended receiving tips and strategies regarding student motivation. Below is a snapshot of their comments to the question “What did you gain from the seminar?” “Study techniques – importance of planning, providing the right environment. Success comes from effort.” “Good simple ideas & importance of basics & structure.”

Year 8 families are asked to note that they will have their Year 9 (GADAL) Information Evening on Tuesday, August 26.

“To me the most important thing I learnt was to praise effort and not talent. I also learnt that I am doing some of the right things with my children which is encouraging.”

Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews

“Using different techniques to change our child’s mindset & give him the confidence to achieve better exam scores, assignments + look forward to a brighter future.”

Our final round of Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews will take place on Wednesday, September 10 (4.00– 7.00pm) and Thursday, September 11 (1.00 – 7.30pm). Please note that the Thursday will be a student free day. Term 3 Interim reports will be available on PAM before bookings open.

“It was brilliant in understanding kids thoughts and how to motivate & understand their thoughts.” “This workshop has opened my eyes to how my children should be planning their study etc. I just thought that it was for the kids not for us to be involved with!”

Staff Faith Day A reminder that our annual Staff Faith Day takes place on Friday, August 22. No student classes will run this day as staff members are involved in the community, assisting schools, churches, social service organisations and families in need of assistance. It is truly a day where we see Faith in action. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Lost Property The office has a large amount of lost property left in the school ground and also from the Snow trip and Athletics day.

These parent evenings are open to all parents and we will continue to provide and offer a variety programs into the future. It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child and when we offer these programs we are part of that village. Team/Group Photos Our official photographers, Arthur Reed Photos, will take team and group photos next Wednesday 20 August at the College. Opportunities will be available to purchase photos online, details will be made available in next week’s newsletter. Sleepout-Friday I had the opportunity to sleep rough with a group of students across Years 7-12 and staff member Ms Rowe-Watts in the Hall last Friday evening to highlight the issue of homelessness in the community. The hardness of the gym floor and coldness of the night didn’t deter the students. We had the opportunity to listen to representatives from St Vinnies, Victoria Police and Fr Fabien of their experiences in dealing with those who are homeless. The students raised over $1800.00 for the cause; they are to be congratulated for such a fantastic effort. Rob Blackley Deputy Principal (Students)

Dance Month: Jazz Workshop On Wednesday 6th August, 20 students from Years 7 – 11 participated in a Jazz workshop after school. The students worked extremely hard during the workshop attempting all of the movements and really impressed Priscilla. There are three more after school workshops to come including Contemporary, Ballet and Hip Hop. Ashlee Hughes VCE Dance Teacher

Cabaret - A Night at the Movies

Aurecon Bridge Building Competition

The dates for this year’s Cabaret Performance,

On Wednesday the 6th August, Nathan Caruana, Jayden Grech and Mathew Mitchell went to Scienceworks for the annual Aurecon Bridge Building competition. The boy’s bridge held 22kg and they were seventh out of a total of 45 schools competing on the day. This was a great effort as they were a late entry into to the competition and only had five sessions after school to design and build this bridge with very little testing. It was a great day seeing the different types of design and shape other schools had created.
