12th February, 2013 Reflection Lent is a time when we prepare as a faith community to meet the risen Christ at Easter. It is a time for us to turn away from what keeps us from living the Gospel, and to remind ourselves that we are called to live lives based on justice. To be just in the biblical sense is to be in right relationship with God. As we prepare to meet Christ in his resurrected glory, we pray for a change of heart towards greater love of God and each other and we share our food, our wealth and our time with others in need. God of love and truth, you called us forth from the dust of earth and claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism. Look upon us as we enter these forty days bearing the mark of ashes. Bless us on our journey through Lent to the waters of rebirth. May our fasting be a hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts. All that we do and pray is in the name of Jesus, for in his cross you proclaim your love now and forever. Amen

‘Whatever it takes’- CRC Melton style

Traffic movement in Bulmans Road

The media has been full of stories in relation to the ‘Drugs in Sport’ over the past week and it is hard not to reflect on the issue. The motivation of athletes to win an AFL Premiership, Olympic Gold Medal or Tour de France is such, that they will do whatever it takes to win. Sadly this means illicit substances for some athletes. I pine for the time when we trained to perform at our best and ‘win, lose or draw’ gained enormous benefits in striving to win. As the saying goes ‘Winning is nice if you don't lose your integrity in the process.’ For our students here at CRC Melton, our coaches will train and coach our teams to do the best they can ie their personal and team best. If they win a Premiership, well done- if they play each week to the best of their ability, striving to win but don’t, that’s a worthwhile pursuit.

Thanks for your cooperation with the changed arrangements at the front of the College. The separation of the school buses from the pedestrian area seems to be working well. Peak time at drop and pick up times will always be busy, so we can only do our best with the strategies mentioned in last week’s newsletter. The City of Melton has further plans for Bulmans Road in the next few years, including a roundabout at Sovereign Boulevard and eventually duplication of the road.

Industrial action - Thursday February 14

The Annual College Working Bee will be held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd March. This weekend has always been well attended by both parents, students and staff working together to complete various jobs around the College, including landscaping and maintenance projects.

Parents will have noted in the media that Industrial action has been planned by the AEU this Thursday. As we have relatively few staff taking industrial action, there will be no disruption to classes here at CRC, so all students are expected to attend school. My hope is this long- running dispute can be resolved as soon as possible.

Parents and Friends Our first meeting for 2013 is on Wednesday February 27th starting at 7.30pm. All welcome, especially parents new to the school. College Working Bee

Welcome back Firstly, welcome to all new CRC Melton families and welcome back to all returning families. Students have settled in well and feedback from their teachers is that all classes are operating as they should. Subject Changes Just a note that subject changes for students closes this Friday, February 15. This date applies to all VCE students and for elective subjects at Years 9 & 10. This date will be notified to all students through the Daily Bulletin. No further changes are allowed for Semester One to allow students the time to adequately achieve all requirements in subjects being taught and assessed. Changes for Semester Two electives will be available closer to the start of Term 3. Buses Students travelling on Bacchus Marsh Coaches and SITA buslines have adapted to the new Bus Transfer Area very well. Their cooperation has been greatly appreciated. We are still consulting with the companies and the bus drivers on refining the pick up procedures to ensure maximum safety and clarity for students. On two of the Bacchus Marsh Coaches, coloured cards have been introduced to ensure bus numbers are correct. I would also like to thank parents dropping off and picking up students for their compliance with the changed areas available for these. Again we continue to work with the Melton City Council to ensure clear signage and safety barriers are installed. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Winter Uniform Fitting Winter uniform fittings will take place on Wednesday 13th February, 12 - 2pm and 6pm - 8pm. Canteen Menu Changes

Trivia Night - fundraising event

The students will have noticed a change in what is being offered at the school canteen. At the end of last year, the Canteen Manager Karen Honey and a small group of staff met to review what was available from the Canteen.

Help us raise funds for the Br. Beausang School in Kenya and the Kenya Immersion program by attending a fun filled night of trivia, raffles and a silent auction. Come alone or bring some friends or family to make up a table. This is a major fundraiser event so please help us help others.

Attached to the newsletter is a copy of our new look summer canteen menu. It has been modified into summer and winter menus. The winter menu will be attached to a newsletter later in the term. New items have been added and others deleted to reflect more healthy options. We have highlighted on the menu with the green smiley face food and drink items considered healthy options by the Healthy Eating Guidelines. A copy of the menu has also been posted in each classroom and on the school intranet. Students are strongly encouraged to place a lunch order at the start of the school day to be assured that what they wish to order is available. The Canteen is always looking for parents to assist in helping out, your P & F hours can be done in the canteen. If are interested and willing to be involved please contact Karen Honey or the College. Rob Blackley Deputy Principal – Student Welfare

Student News Student Social Justice Group – Just Us Congratulations to Jamie Salmon who competed at the Open Water Nationals at Lake Macquarie on 10th February. The swim was a 5km Open Water Swim and in a field of 63 competitors in her age group and in rough conditions, Jamie managed to hold her qualifying time and finished 18th in Australia. St Dominic’s Debutante Ball The St Dominic’s Debutante Ball will be held on Friday 28th June 2013, the last Friday of Term 2. This Ball has been in existence for over 20 years, and was originally for the students attending CRC Melton and Sydenham. We now welcome anyone to join us to celebrate this annual event. Once again this year we are having a Masquerade Ball, this was so popular with our Debutantes last year we are proposing to do it again with the group this year. If you would like to be part of our Ball please call Robyn 97433174 or Sue 97432941 to list your name.

This year we are inviting students from Years 9 – 12 to be part of the St. Vinnie’s Conference group – Just Us. This will be our Social Justice group headed by Joanne Tissera (our senior social justice student representative) and Ms Margaret Rowe-Watts ( Social Justice co-ordinator). The group will be responsible for planning and implementing fundraising within the school and to raise awareness of current issues effecting our world. An information session is being held at lunchtime on Wednesday 15th Feb. Any student with a passion for Justice is encouraged to come along and find out about the application process.
