In memory of Jesus we are called to live and love as he did, to take up our cross daily in acts of unconditional love. In relationship with God we can experience love and recognise each opportunity to draw closer to God, to experience the joy of faith that we can share with others. Compassionate God, through the life, death and Resurrection of your Son Jesus, you have given us a new life. I hope all mothers in the community had a lovely day on Sunday with family gatherings for Mothers Day.
It is great to see the TTC in use by VCAL students this term.
The Church remembers Mary, mother of Jesus during May each year, and her modelling of Christian living and sacrifice is one we could all learn from.
Fr O'Reilly will be blessing the TTC later this month.
For our school term, we are well into our work, both staff and students, with NAPLAN, sports events and crucial SACs at VCE level. Students will cope well in May if they have a balanced life with adequate sleep and healthy nutrition. Many families no doubt have schedules around school/ sport or dance/ homework etc for their children and I commend that. I hope you are enjoying Melbourne's autumn and keep well as we approach winter.

These times are stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure all schools are undertaking tests at common times. Students will need to have a ruler, an eraser and book to read (if they finish early) as well as their books for the remainder of each period class of each session unless told otherwise (as most tests will not take a full 1 period time allotment). Can I particularly stress the need for all students to have their own calculator for the Thursday morning test. Students should also check that fresh batteries have been fitted. Mid Year Exams and Timed Assessment Tasks This year, the College has set out a formal assessment schedule that will operate across Years 7 – 11. Years 7 & 8 Apart from timed assessment tasks that will operate in normal class times, all Year 7 & 8 students will do a Timed Assessment Task in Mathematics and English at the same time. Year 10 & 11 Year 11 students will undertake VCE Unit 1 exams from Wednesday, June 4 to Friday, June 13 and Year 10 students have exams between Thursday, June 5 – Friday, June 13.
Year 11 exams will take place in our new T Building Exam centre and Year 10 exams in our R Building Exam centre. Students are only required at school when they have exams. Supervised study rooms will operate for students who need or wish to be at school during non-exam periods. Students will be expected to wear full College uniform when present for exams. Students need to be at the College at least 15 minutes prior to the published starting times to ensure smooth entry into the exam venues.

Years 11 & 12 - VCAA General Achievement Task (GAT) Year 12 students have normal classes during the Year 10 & 11 exam period, except on Wednesday, June 11 when all Year 12 VCE Students and any Year 11 students undertaking a Unit 3/4 study sit the GAT at 10.00am—1.15pm in J Building. Students need to be at College at least 30 minutes before the GAT published reading time to ensure smooth entry into the exam venues. Full College uniform is required. Year 12 VCAL students will follow their normal programs during this day. Queen’s Birthday Monday, June 9 is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday. Report Finalisation Day The College Mid-year Report finalisation and Professional Learning day takes place on Monday, June 23. This is a student free day. School Photos - May 29
Celebration Day/Back to Parish Mass
Full school photos are scheduled for 29 May. This year the ordering of photos will be online. Details as to how to order photos will be given to each student in the next week. The photographer Arthur Reed Photos will also provide the opportunity for family photos. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform for the photos, if a student has PE or a related activity they will need to bring their PE uniform to school and change.
Next Tuesday we gather as a school for Celebration Day, it is a normal school and all students are required to attend.
Project Rockit As a school we are very conscious of the impact bullying has on individuals and act as we become aware of such incidents. Support programs have also been put in place to educate and inform the students of the impact of bullying. Last Thursday Year 7 students were involved in a program designed to address the issues of bullying and building positive relationships called PROJECT ROCKIT, http://www.projectrockit.com.au. The presenters Lucy and Rose were energetic, enthusiastic and quickly got the students involved. The sessions were highly interactive, strengths-based and fun, with a real focus on allowing students to experience learning through activities, discussion and real-life stories (rather than being formally taught). Rather than dealing with labels of 'bullies' and 'victims,' the approach placed an emphasis on the role of the bystander and the responsibility to stand up to bullying and be counted. The program presented REAL & IN-TOUCH strategies and examined a range of related issues, including social labels, personal values, judgment and leadership. Year 8 students will have the opportunity to be involved in a similar program this week. Canteen Menu The canteen menu can be accessed on the school intranet under student links. Students are strongly encouraged to order their lunch to ensure they get what they want for lunch. Canteen manager Karen Honey is always looking for parents, both mums and dads to volunteer some time to help out in the canteen. Contact Karen if you would like to help out. Students will start their day at their local parish church for morning Mass with their parish community. Students celebrating Mass at St Anthony’s or St Bernard’s will return to school by bus for Celebration Day activities. Students celebrating at St Catherine’s will of course walk back to school. CRC staff will be at all parishes and supervise the return to school. The College day will have a normal finish time of 3.20pm. Students are to wear PE uniform and are expected to make their own way to church and are required 15 minutes before Mass begins. Mass times:

Robert Blackley Deputy Principal (Students) VCE Dance Workshop On Thursday 8th May the VCE Dance students took part in a Ballet Technique workshop. The workshop was designed to help students improve safe dance practices and their overall technique as this will be a large factor in the end of year Solos. The Ballet Teacher, Kara Burdack, who was trained at the Victorian College of the Arts expressed to the students the importance of maintaining safety within their body and how technique is a must for aspiring dancers. Celebration Day 2014 As mentioned earlier in the newsletter we will be holding our annual Celebration Day next week, where students will attend mass in the mornings and then come back to school where there will be fun games and activities for the students to enjoy for the rest of the day. From tomorrow until next Monday, $10 wristbands will be on sale to students out the front of the library. They will also be for sale on Celebration Day from 10.3011.30am. These wristbands will entitle the students to unlimited rides for the day. For prices of food please refer to the Celebration Day menu, as the canteen will be closed on the day. This year the funds raised will be shared between our sister school in Kenya, Br Beausang, St Vincent’s De Paul and Legacy, helping soldiers and veterans. Also many of the new ideas this year have come from our Year 12 leadership team in collaboration with our SRC leaders, as they have been working tirelessly to make this event possible. This year we will have four exciting rides: The Spin Out – A carnival ride that uses centrifugal force to push students back in their seats. The Edge – A 15m high inflatable slide. The Footy Challenge – An inflatable obstacle course where students compete against each other. The Giraffe - A jumping castle. Other activities: DJ – there will be a smoke machine and flashing lights. Talent Show – Where students showcase their talents and are in the chance to win one of 3 Woodgrove vouchers. Banner Making – Handprints are placed on the banner in Year level colours and it will be displayed above the hall. Xbox competition – students battle it out to see who is the Call of Duty Champion. 3 point contest – students will sign up in teams and compete in a 3 point basketball competition. Backboard League Competition – Students compete for the title of Backboard League Champion. Goal kicking – Students will have the chance to test their skills at kicking either a soccer ball or an AFL ball into a bin from a distance. Parents/guardians need to be aware that some of the rides and activities may not be suitable for students with asthma, heart conditions, epilepsy, anxiety, vertigo and low blood pressure.
