15th July, 2014 Reflection A Prayer to Begin a New Term We are created in the image and likeness of God. Filled with the divine presence, may we always reflect the face of Christ to the world. May our hidden selves grow strong in Christ. May our lives be planted in love and built on love, so that every decision may be patterned on the mind of Christ. May we grow in all ways into Christ. May we see with the eyes of faith and reach out with the compassion of Christ to those who are troubled or in need. May Christ live in our hearts through faith. Out of His infinite glory, may He give you the power through His Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will, with all the saints have strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge, you are filled with the utter fullness of God. (Eph 3:14–19).

One Punch Forum You may have read in the local press and the Herald Sun at the end of last term about the One Punch Forum that was presented to all Year 11 and 12 students. This came about as a result of Year 11 student Tegan Lafranchi watching a 60 Minutes program early in the year with her family and being moved to want to do something within our school community to highlight the impact and tragedy of such events.

Step Back Think wants to encourage young people to think more about their actions and their consequences. We’re urging people to look out for their friends – guys and girls - because one punch can change countless lives forever. As a community we congratulate Tegan for showing such initiative and commitment in bringing this to fruition. CareMonkey

With the assistance of Inspector Stephen Mutton, Victoria Police, we were able to assemble a panel of people who have been affected in one way or another by such incidents. These include victim Ben O’Toole from Step Back Think, Megan Kelly ICU nurse from Royal Melbourne Hospital, Charlie Bezzina, former Police Detective and Drug and Alcohol Workers Lois Forster and Anita Bowcock. Each had their own story to tell and message to deliver. It was a thought provoking and challenging presentation for the students. There were many messages that came out of the forum; one of the most important is street violence and domestic violence are more often than not linked directly to the consumption of alcohol and taking of drugs. The impacts can be and are devastating to all who are involved therefore good decisions need to be made. Step Back Think http://www.stepbackthink.org/about/ seeks to eradicate street violence. A single punch thrown in the heat of the moment can end the life of your brother or sister or friend and tear your world apart.

Over the holiday break, all families received information regarding the collection of student medical information. No longer will families be required to complete hardcopies of medical information to return to the College. We now require all families to complete this information online using the program CareMonkey. To date 250 of 970 students have their medical profile details entered, if you are yet to do so please see this is completed. If you did not receive an email over the break please contact Kerrie-Ann Matthews - kmatthews@crcmelton.com.au As of next year all excursion permission slips will be sent via CareMonkey. Winter Uniform and Student Stationery Term 3 The Term 2 break was a good opportunity to ensure student uniform is cleaned and updated if necessary. The requirements for the wearing of the winter uniform are set out clearly in the student diary and on the school website. Failing to wear the uniform correctly can result in points being given. If a student is consistently wearing the uniform incorrectly they will receive a detention after school as a result of an accumulation of points.

The PE uniform is only worn when the student has a timetabled PE class, Drama class or when otherwise specified by the College Leadership team. Students are only permitted to wear one plain silver or gold stud or small sleeper in the ear, no facial piercing is allowed. Male students need to be cleanly shaved. We look for your support in ensuring your son or daughter is wearing the College uniform correctly to and from school. The holiday break is also an opportunity to update students with the necessary stationery supplies as some students will have made subject changes. Parent Information Evening - Student Motivation July 29 Last term, the College provided an opportunity for Year 12 parents to attend an information evening centering on strategies they can use to support their child whilst doing Year 12. The focus was on motivation, support techniques and tips. Unfortunately it didn’t run because of poor numbers. A number of parents across other year levels contacted me about the possibility of offering a similar opportunity for them. We are offering the opportunity for parents across Years 7-11 to attend a parent evening on July 29 at 7pm in the College Hall. A letter outlining the presentation will be distributed to students at the end of this week to take home. Please return by Thursday 24 July if you are attending. More details will also be available on the College website.

Reports Semester One Reports opened over the break through the Parent Portal. If any parents / guardians were unable to access the on-line reports because they had misplaced their Parent Portal access code please email the College at itsupport@crcmelton.com.au and a new copy will be sent to you. The Art Room

Year 8 Italian Excursion

During Semester One our Year 8 art students have been studying Aboriginal art as part of our Indigenous Unit. Below are some examples of student work that focus on dot and line being applied to rocks, tiles and totem poles.

The Year 8 Italian trip to Lygon Street was a successful and fun day. We were lucky to have sun and blue suburban skies as we walked around and visited many Italian shops. Lygon Street was filled with authentic Italian cafés and restaurants which filled the air with the aroma of fresh bread and tomatoes. We visited the Italian Museo which was very interesting because we got to learn about Italian migrants who came here to Australia as well as how Italians have influenced our community. The highlight of my day was eating the authentic pizza and desserts at D.O.C; the food was so fresh and delicious and different. Overall, Lygon Street was like a little piece of Italy in Melbourne and it was a really great day just hanging out with friends while learning about the Italian culture. Chloe Laurel 8C

City of Melton Youth Futures Forum Want your say on local youth issues? The City of Melton is in the process of planning Youth Services for 2014-2017, and a series of public consultation and engagement sessions are being held so you can come and hear about the issues, and help generate solutions. Young people are an important part of the City of Melton, so we need to get the service balance right – both now and into the future. We are seeking input from both young people and their families, and adding your voice can be as simple as an online survey, or coming along to our Youth Futures Forum at Melton Library on August 20. For more information on sessions – or links to simple online surveys, please go to www.melton.vic.gov.au/ youthfuturesforum or contact Cobina Crawford (Youth Strategy and Engagement Planner) on 03 9747 7200 or via email oncobinac@melton.vic.gov.au
