17th June, 2014 Reflection May our ‘way of looking’ become more like yours Lord, we come before you as we are. We ask you to take away from us all that makes us less than human. Strengthen us with the power of your Spirit that our attitude and outlook may develop, and our “way of looking” may become more like yours. Help us to remain positive - encouraging and appreciating one another, looking upon people in the same way that you do. Amen.

Mr Sheehan is currently on leave for the next two weeks and I have stepped into his role in his absence. As a school community teachers and staff gather for a morning briefing 3 times a week at 8.30 for a reflection or prayer led by one of their colleagues and information regarding past or upcoming events. I had the opportunity to lead the staff on Monday morning for the reflection. As I was driving to work that morning I was thinking to myself what can I share with the staff? What came to me were the extraordinary efforts our students go to in supporting others who are not as fortunate as them. In many ways they are Christ’s story in action. Some of the things our students are involved in or promoting are, last Friday night a group of students with staff members, Marg Rowe Watts and Kathy Sayers, volunteered their time to help out with the St Vinnie’s food vans in Fitzroy. The student Social Justice Committee and Intermediate VCAL class came to me last week with a proposal to support and raise awareness of the plight of the homeless in our community by organising a sleep out early next term. Posters are currently on display around the school asking our community to donate blankets, jumpers and warm clothing for the homeless. Year 11 student Tegan Lafranchi approached Year 11 Coordinator Mr Henneman and myself early this term with the suggestion we should do something about the tragic one punch incidents we hear and read about. This has lead to a presentation being organised, with the support of the Melton police, for all Year 11 and 12 students next week involving a range of people involved in such incidents. No doubt there are many other examples of CRC students who have committed to improve the life of others. We can be justly proud of their effort and commitment. The students are acting on the belief that they can make a difference.

A reminder, next Monday, 23rd June, is a student free day as staff will be involved in Professional Learning activities. Robert Blackley Acting Principal Last Day of Term 2 Please note that Term 2 classes finish at 2.30pm next Friday, June 27. This is to ensure our students finish in line with other secondary schools for bus connections. Please note that the local SITA Town buses will continue to operate on normal times. We advise that students who catch these buses may find it more convenient to make other arrangements home this day. Finally, a newsletter will be mailed home next week. It will contain information on accessing Semester One Reports. Reports will only be available through the College’s Parent Portal. Exams Congratulations to our Year 11, 10 and 9 students who undertook their Semester 1 exams in a positive and studious manner. Students will have the opportunity to receive their exams back and use the feedback for future improvement. We trust that all students worked to their potential and will receive the grades that they deserve. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff)

Semester 2 Elective Changes –Year 10 & 9

Year 11 VCE Students Pathway Planning Day

Year 10 & 9 students will have access to Semester 2 changes over the next 2 weeks. All students have been given a copy of their Semester 2 electives. This week Year 10 students receive exam feedback with an opportunity to review Semester 2 subjects. Year 9 students may enquire about possible changes during these last 2 weeks of this term. Semester 2 Electives for both Year 9 and 10 classes will begin at the start of Term 3.

This Friday 20th June, Year 11 VCE students will be involved in a Pathway Planning Day held on campus. The aim of the day is to introduce students to a variety of methods of gathering information and to assist them in preparing for life beyond secondary school. This will also allow students to make more informed decisions when completing Year 12 subject selections. The day will run from 9:00am to 3:20pm as a normal school day, winter uniform is to be worn. Students will need to bring morning tea but lunch will be provided. Students must ensure that they have a fully charged iPad. A letter was distributed to students on Monday 16th June, which contains an outline of the day. Year 11 VCAL students will continue with their normal program and placements. Any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at the College.

Work Experience Next week our Year 10s undertake Work Experience. I wish them all the best in this valuable undertaking. I am sure all our Year 10 students will not only enjoy the week but learn new skills and develop more self-confidence and resilience. Year 9 Year 9 students are involved with two major events next week. The Year 9 Reflection Day takes place on Wednesday and on the Thursday, they head to Ballarat for our annual Sovereign Hill excursion. Families are asked to note any special requirements needed on these days. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff) Year 9 Humanities As part of the Year 9 Humanities curriculum, students have been learning about Australian Identity: First European settlement and Aboriginal Culture. To complete the unit and support the students learning 9M had an Australia Day in class. The students were encouraged to bring in Australian food (many choosing tim tams, cherry ripe, Anzac biscuits and lamingtons). As a class we discussed our migration stories, listened to Australian music, analysed images and finished with a quiz. The students did a fabulous job at finding out their families history as to why they decided to travel to Australia, some being recent and others many generations ago. Dean Henneman Year 11 Coordinator dhenneman@crcmelton.com.au Year 9 Dance Performance On Thursday 12th June the Year 9 Dance students performed their group dances as part of their assessment. For many of the students involved it was their first time performing on a stage and they were very nervous and excited. The performance was seen by over 60 students who came and supported the performers. I would like to say that I am very proud of the effort put into this dance by all of the students and the lunchtime and after school rehearsals they attended. Keep up the hard work.
