17th September, 2013 Reflection “Jesus is calling you to be a disciple with a mission! Today, in the light of the Word of God that we have heard, what is the Lord saying to us? Three simple ideas: Go, do not be afraid, and serve.” (Pope Francis to pilgrims at World Youth Day in Brazil) Lydia Lassila Award Last night I was privileged to be on hand as Emily O'Rourke was presented with the Lydia Lassila Award for the best Youth Sportsperson in the City of Melton. Emily's coach and family were present at the Awards along with CRC staff member John McCann. The scholarship, named after Winter Olympic Gold Medalist Lydia Lassila, provides $1500 to support Emily in her intensive swimming program.

Please note that the College will be closed during the first week of the holidays. Only maintenance staff will be on site. Also during this week power and other services will be disconnected at various times to allow our Trade Training Centre’s construction to continue. Year 12 Practice exams will take place during the second week of the holidays. All students have a copy of this program. Tablet Devices for Year 9 Students

Recently Emily competed in Adelaide at the National Championships and came 2nd in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Parent Communications

End of Term 3 The last day of Term 3 is Friday, September 20. The College will finish at 2.30pm. Bacchus Marsh Coaches will operate at earlier times to suit this but SITA coaches will run to their normal town service times. I ask that families of students that normally catch the SITA bus make other arrangements for this day wherever possible. Students will also be reminded of this through Bus Duty teachers.

This newsletter is one of only four that we mail home during the year. All other newsletters are emailed home each week. We rely on parents reading the newsletter as it and our College Website (with its Parent Access Module - PAM) are our main avenue of keeping parents informed. If you have difficulty receiving the emailed newsletter or accessing PAM please ensure that you contact the College office. John Christie Deputy Principal - Staff

End of Term

Term 4 School Uniform

This week signals the end of Term 3, students are no doubt looking forward to the holidays. For staff the holidays will be a time to recharge the batteries after what has been a very busy and eventful term.

The start of Term 4 is a period of transition in the wearing of the school uniform. Students have the option of wearing either the summer or winter uniform in Term 4 up until the Melbourne Cup. Stated below are the uniform requirements for Term 4. The school jumper is not the outer garment to be worn to and from school.

For Unit 3 and 4 students the holiday break will not be a time of sitting back and putting the feet up. The students will face practice exams during the second week of the holidays. This will be a good opportunity for them to sit the exams under exam conditions and allow them to make some judgment as to their levels of understanding across the subjects. It will also assist them in determining how they spend their remaining weeks at school during the revision program. For the students who have been well prepared and working consistently throughout the year the exams should be approached with some confidence. The students whose work approach during the year has been inconsistent, all is not lost, significant gains can be made in the remaining weeks with a concentrated effort. For parents of the students it will also be a time of anxiety and hope. My advice to parents is to be there and provide reassurance for your son and daughter when needed. We wish them well.

Year 9 Dance Performance On Wednesday 11th September the Year 9 Dance students performed their first dance to an audience of 160 students. The students, as part of their assessment task, were taught a choreographed piece of dance which consisted of dance styles such as Classical, Jazz, Contemporary and Neo Classical. The dance students were buzzing with excitement to showcase the dance they have been learning over the last 8 weeks and the audience was extremely supportive and receptive to the students. The students worked extremely hard to perfect all dance moves and convey the expressive intention of the dance. Congratulations students you should be very proud. Ashlee Hughes Dance Co-ordinator

Student Welfare-RU OK Day?

Holocaust Museum Excursion

A group of SRC students helped in organising and running a sausage sizzle last Friday to promote RU OK Day? As each student approached to buy a snag they were asked RU OK? The $221.00 raised from their efforts will be donated to the work of RU OK. Thank you to the following students for their efforts Shanai McKenzie, Zinah D'Souza, Alesha Winzar, Rebekah Hibberd, Meg Bacchin, Mikayla Tyrrell, Alana Wilson, Liam Martin, Julie De Domenico, Zac Miesen, Brodrick Hoult, Dominic Miesen, Brody Willmott, Reed Panozza and Kitty Robinson.

On Tuesday 10th September, 51 students from Year 10 went on an excursion to the Jewish Holocaust Museum to help with further understanding of the events that occurred during WWII, which is being taught in their History classes. It was an emotionally packed day with the students attending a Seminar, hearing a story from a survivor and having a guided tour through the museum. The tour guides were so impressed with the professionalism and knowledge of our students that they would be more than happy for us to visit again. Keep up the great work History students.

My Experience with the Soup Van On the 13th of September a group of 7 students, including myself and Ms Rowe Watts, volunteered for the St. Vincent De Paul ( Matthew Talbot) soup van that travels the streets of Fitzroy every night of the year. There were 6 stops around Melbourne; the Fitzroy flats, behind Crown Casino, 2 parks in Melbourne, Flinders Street Station and Victoria Market. It was an eye opening experience for all of us. We got to learn about their stories and how they got to this point in life. I remember one story from a lady, she had 4 kids and her husband had passed away sometime ago. Unfortunately she is unable to make ends meet so each month she has to choose between paying rent or buying food. Thanks to the soup van, she is able to pay the rent and keep a roof over the family’s head and still be able to feed her kids. I never really knew how many people lived in Melbourne and relied on help from the soup vans. This experience has made me feel humble and thankful for what I have and how lucky I am to be living the life I am living. This was a life changing experience, one I will never forget. Amy Brewer Thanks to all the students who attended and to the parents that had to brave the cold to do a very late pick up from school that night. To Connor Farrugia, Amelia Williamson, Sophie Brown Sulman, Amy Brewer, Angeline Lopes, Bridget Di Mieri and Maddy Ryan – thanks for joining me and showing that you care about others. Also thanks for contributing toiletries that were much appreciated by everyone. This Friday another small group of students will join the soup van and travel the backstreets of Fitzroy, Collingwood and North Melbourne. We will endeavour to collect and take along a box of toiletries again – soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, washing powder, tissues – any contributions will be much appreciated. Archimede Fusillo Archimede Fusillo led a writers workshop for 12 students in Year 9 from CRC Melton and Year 10's from another school in the region, on the 15th of August at the Melton Library in hope of inspiring young writers. He gave us a section of text written by one of his students for us to recreate in our own words and explained what makes a good story. We discovered how, when writing a story, the amount of words doesn't have to be a great number as long as it paints a picture that all the readers can clearly understand. Using the text titled 'Into the Night', Archie pointed out how the author used words that didn't fit in with the story; an example was when the author said 'it was late at night and the sun was down'. The sun was clearly down if it was late at night so the author didn't need to state that the sun was down. The workshop was extremely insightful and helpful for those who were interested in creative writing or looking to become authors themselves. A few students from CRC Melton had the opportunity to have their copy of 'The Dons' signed by Archie and the time spent was enjoyable for all the students attending.
