18th February, 2014 Reflection Jesus, I am very often envious of the disciples..... They could touch you, talk to you, listen to you, all day every day. They saw you heal the sick, feed the hungry, give sight to the blind. Their hearts must often have been moved as they listened to your parables and your teaching. How exciting it must have been for them! In spite of being so close to you, they still had difficulty in understanding what you were on about. I feel exasperated with these men of Galilee, critical of their diminished understanding. Surely I would have understood. Or would I? You have performed miracles in my life and I do not see. Open my eyes and ears, Lord, that I may know and serve you.

Bryce Robinson will be studying Science/Law at the Australian National University this year. He is the recipient of the Tuckwell Scholarship. The Scholarship program is an incredibly prestigious national program open to students from all around Australia and awards 25 scholarships each year. The scholarship is awarded to high achieving students with a likelihood of achieving an ATAR of 95+, who demonstrate leadership skills and a propensity to contribute to the community. Bryce was amongst 700 applicants from schools across Australia. After two stages of selection, he was chosen as one of 75 students flown to Canberra for the interview process and the final stage of selection. Bryce intends to study a five-year double degree in Law/Science. Uniform We are now into our third week of the school year therefore all uniform items should now be obtained. We look for your support ensuring your child comes to school in the correct uniform, whether that is the summer uniform or PE uniform. Some students are not wearing the correct footwear, school shoes must be black leather lace-up and PE must be runners. Points are being issued to students if wearing the incorrect uniform. Some senior boys are coming to school not clean shaven. If this is the case they are required to shave here at school. If they refuse they are being removed from class. Students are only permitted to wear one piercing in each ear.

Address to staff and students by Bryce Robinson 2013 Dux Good morning everybody, it’s fantastic to see all of you again. Today, I am standing up here as the Dux of 2013. It is an absolutely fantastic honour, especially because of the tough competition and, also, the immense support of my peers. Given my work ethic over the course of last year, I had hoped to score well, but I certainly did not expect the score I achieved. However, on reflection I realise that this score was only made possible by the opportunities provided to me at CRC. Over my six years at CRC, the incredible support and guidance of our teachers has allowed for the development of our ability to think critically, study effectively, embrace opportunity and question everything. Without the unwavering dedication of our teachers, from Year 7 up until the VCE, we wouldn’t have anything to celebrate today. By the same token, it is extremely important to acknowledge the significance of CRC’s dedication to providing a vast range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities for its students. Especially in our senior years, we must take care to avoid regarding sports, arts, social justice endeavours and the like as distractions, or perhaps excuses to be distracted, from the central purpose of our education. Instead, they should be viewed as opportunities to develop skills that will enable us to experience the world as a creative, disciplined and well-rounded individuals with much to offer the community. Whilst today is significant in its celebration of the efforts, sacrifice and success of 2013 Yr 12s, it is important to regard the ATAR not as a source of competition, but as a tool. The ATAR serves primarily as a key which allows us to pursue our individual journeys. For example, my ATAR has allowed me to immerse myself in a vibrant, new world in our national capital, studying something that I am deeply passionate about. However, an ATAR is no good unless you know how to use it, which now provides a perfect opportunity for me to extend enormous gratitude to Mrs Pauline Jakobovic, from me personally and on behalf of our cohort, who has guided us all so that we may make the best possible use of our scores, our futures and the opportunities presented to us. I promise this is my last speech here for real this time, but I just wanted to finally say thank you to Mr Sheehan and our other leaders, teachers and peers for supporting us through our time here at CRC, and I wish all of the students here, and those now moving on, the best of luck in all of your endeavours.

Community Service Program 2014

As in past years, a broad Community Service is expected of our senior students, Years 11&12. Students are encouraged to seek out opportunities to provide service to the local and wider community by being engaged in selfless Christian acts of service. Over these two senior years students will be expected to commit to acts of service for 20 hours. The activities will be recorded in a Community Service Logbook, with appropriate evidence of it being undertaken. Students who meet this expectation are awarded a Certificate of Community Service, which can be used in their resume. Students are encouraged to seek out opportunities for service in their immediate community. Our Parish Priests are aware of our program and may contact students from time to time via the parish newsletter, or through our College newsletter. Examples of service activities could include: Gardening for elderly parishioners, performing at an elderly person’s home, giving blood (age restrictions), tutoring, organising fundraising, assisting at the College after school or on student-free days, cooking/baking for a morning tea for visiting groups, assisting at a local kindergarten’s fundraising barbecue or a working bee or even spending an evening on a ‘soup van’. (Year 12s received their logbooks last year, the Year 11s will receive theirs shortly.) Shaun Coates RE/Faith Development Coordinator
