21st July, 2015 Reflection Reflection "Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:28-30

At our school assembly last Thursday College Captains Bowde Griffith and Tegan Lafranchi presented a cheque for $2935.31 from Celebration Day fundraising to Orygen Youth Health Services. Orygen Youth Health (OYH) is a world-leading youth mental health program based in Melbourne. It has two main components: a specialised youth mental health clinical service; and an integrated training and communications program. The College has been working closely with Orygen across a number of year levels and with staff. Richard Bell, Clinical Psychologist accepted the cheque for Orygen and was very grateful of the generosity of our students. He spoke of the importance of looking after and supporting each other. I received the following email from Richard the next day- A big thanks to you, your teachers and students. I was truly impressed and inspired by the level of enthusiasm and warmth of the teachers and students I met today.

Drug Community Forum

Year 9 Gadal News

As was written in last week’s newsletter the College is holding a Drug Community forum August 6 with the support of Victoria Police and the City of Melton. We have been overwhelmed with the response with over 250 people indicating they will be attending. As the forum is being held in our Performing Arts Centre the numbers able to attend is limited, we have reached that capacity. With such strong support and interest in attending an additional forum will need to be held in the near future.

A reminder that the 2016 Year 10 Core & VINCIT Information Evening will be held at 7.00pm on Wednesday 5 August 2015 in the College Hall. The purpose of this evening is to support parents & students with choosing suitable subjects or VINCIT Course. We expect all current Year 9 students to attend. Some information and assistance will also be provided during Assembly and Homeroom sessions.

MindMatters A student survey has been sent to all students to gauge their understanding of mental health and what the school can do to support positive mental health. Our parent community will also be asked to complete a similar survey. The feedback provided will be invaluable to our work. Rob Blackley Deputy Principal-Students

Performing Arts Gala - Around the World

Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition

The 2015 Catholic Regional College Performing Arts Gala, Around the World, shall officially open at 7pm on Thursday 3rd September, and conclude with our final performance on Friday 4th September within our gorgeous new Performing Arts Centre. Hospitality staff and students shall again be supporting the performing arts by serving hors-d'oeuvres prior to the performance and the Visual Art department shall install an art exhibition within the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre for your viewing pleasure.

On Wednesday the 17th of June, the Year 9-12 Italian students went on an excursion to Melbourne University to participate in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. Before the recital, everyone was nervously waiting and practising their selected poem, especially the Year 9 students as it was their first time participating. At 11:30am, we were called in by Italian section and Non Italian section to recite the poems in front of a judge. Everyone was pleasantly surprised as it was much easier than expected. After everyone had finished we had free time and walked around Lygon Street with our friends to enjoy the Italian culture. It was a good experience as it will help us with our Italian studies and public speaking.

Tickets for the Performing Arts Gala are $10 each and are now available from the College office. Please note, that the seating for this year’s performance shall be allocated; as such, patrons are advised to book early to ensure that they are able to secure consecutive seating for all of their guests. When booking your tickets, please advise booking staff of any disabled access requirements.

Italian Excursion

Total cost: $ __________________

On Wednesday the 24th of June all students studying Italian as a subject went on an excursion to Lygon Street in Carlton. We learned a lot of interesting information about traditional Italian food and history. Everyone got given worksheets to fill out through the day which caused us to walk up and down Lygon Street a few times to find certain shops that contained certain Italian ingredients or foods. The itinerary that was followed throughout the day included free time, time in the Italian Museum, time to fill in worksheets that were given out and a traditional Italian lunch. We had the opportunity to taste pizza in the method that it's cooked in Italy as well as the traditional Italian desserts. It was a great experience and many enjoyed the day out.

Money must be enclosed in order to receive tickets.

Student News Congratulations to Emily Stirling from 10 Anthony who represented CRC Melton at the Victorian State Interschool Championships at Werribee. Emily placed 8th and 9th in the state for show jumping and is looking forward to the Australian Championships in September 2015.

More than 22,000 people in Victoria are considered homeless, with almost 6000 of these being under the age of 18. The Winter sleep out provides us with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of homelessness and how it effects people’s lives. The Sleep out lets us experience in a very small way what it would be like to be homeless while also raising awareness and funds that will be donated to St. Vincent De Paul. If you cannot attend but would like to donate, leave donations with the office. The details are as follows: 7.00pm – arrival at school on Friday Night, dinner provided, guest speakers and activities. 7.00am Saturday morning departure after breakfast and debrief. If interested contact Ms. Rowe-Watts Last year we raised $1900.00, let’s see if we can beat that amount this year and aim for $2200.00

I am proud to announce that Victoria Vassallo, our Deputy Social Justice leader, was elected by 100 other students to be a part of the Vic SRC team. She was 1 of 15 students, chosen to represent the state of Victoria, discussing problems affecting students; issues the government are addressing in parliament; and creating change for students around the state. Victoria will be attending a monthly meeting, with the rest of the team in Melbourne, to consult on the above issues and what can be done. We are very proud of her achievements and sure she will do CRC Melton proud. Laura Grech Student Leadership Coordinator Sam Rogan was presented with the Australian Scout Medallian, the highest achievement for a Scout. He demonstrated leadership, organization, drive, determination, resilience and high level practical Scouting knowledge like campcraft and hiking.
