Year 12, 2012 Academic Awards It was pleasing to see the high achievers from last year return to the College for our Academic Awards ceremony last week. College Dux for 2012 was Brad Cottam achieving an ATAR score of 89.85. Brad’s subjects last year were English, Physical Education, Mathematical Methods, Physics, Business Management and Further Mathematics. Brad will be studying Engineering - Civil Infrastructure/ Management at RMIT this year. Congratulations to Brad and all the Award winners. Good luck for 2013. A special thanks to the parents of our Award winners for their support on the day. School attendance and punctuality I would like to raise awareness amongst our families that students need to be present at school at 8.40am each morning. A successful day at school starts with students being here 'ready to learn', well prepared with a good night's sleep and adequate nutrition. Penalties may need to increase if the current pattern of student lateness prevails. In regard to attendance it beggars belief that a VCE student will be given permission to be away from school to: 1. Attend a concert such as Soundwave 2. Attend an event such as the Grand Prix 3. Prepare for a Debutante Ball or a social function VCE Classes run for only 79 days in Semester One and students cannot afford to miss one day for events such as listed above. The review process for VCE students who are absent when SACs are scheduled may need to be strengthened . Eg. Resitting SACs on Curriculum days or Saturday mornings.

Year 12, 2012 BBQ The class of 2012 will be back again this Wednesday at 6pm for a BBQ organised by Mrs Gauci and Mr Blackley. We look forward to seeing as many former students as possible. Working bee I call on all families to participate in the upcoming Working Bee this weekend. We have many new buildings, but the surrounds of each need some “Green TLC”- like a new housing estate! So come along, roll up your sleeves and help us make your kids school an even better environment. Parents and Friends Our first meeting for 2013 is being held this Wednesday night at 7.30pm in the conference room. All parents welcome, especially those new to the school. Swimming Carnival The College Swimming Carnival takes place this Thursday, February 28 at Melton Waves. All Year 7 – 12 students are expected to attend and where possible participate in events on the day. Presently, the weather forecast for the day is suitable but it will be reviewed on Wednesday at 3pm. If the Carnival needs to be cancelled due to safety reasons, a normal school day will run. A notice will go out to all students and a SMS will be sent home to all parents. If you do not receive notification then the Carnival will proceed as normal. Mark Sheehan Principal

A copy of your current Health Care Card is required. The closing date for EMA application forms to be submitted to the school is 28 February 2013. Please note that late applications cannot be processed.

SACCSS Swimming Trials The SACCSS Swimming Team will be having their selection trials, at Melton Waves, on Wednesday 27th February at 7:00am. Students are to arrive at the normal training time and will be bussed back to the College at the completion of the trials. It is not anticipated that students will miss any class time.


Working Bee 2013

Year 8 Camp Report

An invitation is extended to all families to be part of one of the biggest events on the College calendar – our Annual Working Bee. Not only do we need the support of our families at this event, but it is a wonderful example of offering your talents that hugely benefit our students as well as being an occasion to enjoy fellowship with staff and other parents. It takes place over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd March and I urge everyone to be part of this great family/community opportunity to beautify our College. If you are able to help out at the Working Bee, supply morning tea or make a donation please complete the attached Working Bee Participation form.

The Year 8 camp was held at Anglesea two weeks ago. We participated in many fun activities including: the high ropes, surfing and an initiative course. Most people stepped out of their comfort zone for the high ropes, which was pretty exciting considering how high off the ground it was. At the beach, we had the opportunity to learn how to surf which was great. In the initiative course, we all had to work together to complete difficult group activities. We finished off the day back at the camp site with group activities and a movie. Camp was amazing and many memories were made. Thanks to all teachers who attended to make our stay enjoyable and to Mr Henneman our Year Level Coordinator for organising the camp.

Peter Drew Property Manager Saturday Nights Live!! Young Volunteer Peer-Educator Intake for 2013 Saturday Nights Live!! is an underage drop-in program, funded by the Australian Government and run by Melton City Council Youth Services with local young volunteer peer educators, to reduce the prevalence of binge drinking among teenagers and provide an alternative to the house party scene throughout the Melton municipality. This program provides two smoke-free, alcohol-free and drug-free venues to young people ages 12 to 17 years:Morph at Melton and The Scene at Taylors Hill. Each venue is open on Saturday nights from 6pm to 10pm and consists of a fully functioning cafe providing refreshments and homemade snacks, as well as an ambient lounge providing young people with amusements and various entertainment, such as live bands, DJs, in-house cinema, theatre and more. Short Peer Education activities on the effects of alcohol and binge drinking are also run each week. The program is planned and run by young volunteer peer -educators aged 17 to 25 years, who receive training in accredited units of Youth Work, Hospitality and practical experience in event planning and management. We are currently recruiting new volunteers for 2013 and are calling for expressions of interest. Further information is attached to this newsletter. The 2013 Catholic Regional College Melton Swimming Carnival is to be held at Melton Waves Leisure Centre on Thursday, 28th March. The following information provides a summary of the day and the requirements for attendance. Please note full attendance is expected. We have endeavoured to include a range of alternative activities to cater for students who are not confident in their swimming ability and hope that this will enable all students to focus on the development of a positive and encouraging school community.

Cabaret - “You’re the Voice” This year’s Cabaret is called “You’re the Voice”. The Voice coaches: Joel, Seal, Delta & Keith will take us on an extravagant journey through the music of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s! Get your Music or Dance group together, choose your decade and get your audition piece ready for the first few weeks of Term 2!! There will be Dance Troupes, Ensemble, Bands and smaller Dance groups. Although there will be no solo items in this year’s Cabaret, you can still audition by yourself and we will help find you a group. Catholic Regional College Melton Swimming Carnival. Venue: Melton Waves Leisure Centre Attendance: Compulsory for all students. Time: 8.30am Roll call at Melton Waves. 2.45 dismissal from Melton Waves. Transport: Normal Melton bus services will operate. Bacchus Marsh students can stay aboard buses until the milk bar stop opposite the pool. CRC Staff will supervise this stop. Three alternate routes will be provided for students returning to Bacchus Marsh including a Darley run, Main Street and Maddingley. These should cover most of the normal stops. Contact Bacchus Marsh Coaches for further details. Uniform: Students are to wear full PE uniform with the option of a house coloured top. The top must cover the shoulders and midriff and also have no provocative printing. Food: A sausage sizzle will be held to raise money for College charities. None of the internal café facilities will be accessible to students and therefore any other food items should be brought along. Awards & Recognition: Students will compete for records in all traditional 50m races. All events will accrue points for their house. Individual medals will be awarded by house captains to one male and one female student from each year level, deemed to have demonstrated the most house spirit. Criteria are as follows: a. b. c. d.
