27th May, 2014 Reflection Dadirri “Dadirri is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us. This is the gift that Australia is thirsting for. It is something like what you call ‘contemplation’. When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someone close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in this silent awareness. There is no need of words. A big part of dadirri is listening.” “In our Aboriginal way, we learnt to listen from our earliest days. We could not live good and useful lives unless we listened. This was the normal way for us to learn - not by asking questions. We learnt by watching and listening, waiting and then acting.” “My people are not threatened by silence. They are completely at home in it. They have lived for thousands of years with Nature’s quietness. My people today, recognise and experience in this quietness, the great Life-Giving Spirit, the Father of us all.” Another part of dadirri is “the quiet stillness and the waiting,” “Our Aboriginal culture has taught us to be still and to wait. We do not try to hurry things up. We let them follow their natural course - like the seasons.” Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann, Aboriginal writer

School Photos - May 29 School photos are scheduled for 29 May. This year the ordering of photos will be online. Details as to how to order photos has been given to each student. The flyer sets out the instructions on how to place your order online. Online orders are now open and will remain open 10 days after May 29. The photographer Arthur Reed Photos will also provide the opportunity for family photos but this order needs to be placed by midnight the day before the photos, i.e. May 28. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform for the photos. Students are not to come in the PE uniform on Thursday, as all PE and Drama classes do not require the wearing of the PE uniform for the day. For the purpose of the photos the College jumper is to be worn with the College blazer being the external garment. School shoes need to be cleaned and polished, single ear piercings only, shirts tucked in, top button and tie done up, make-up and nail polish is not to be worn and boy’s must be clean-shaven. On this last point, a number of boys from Years 10-12 were required to shave at school last week because they came to school unshaven. It is clearly stated in the College diary and made known to the boys at recent school assemblies, the requirement and consequences of being clean shaven. If your son comes to school not cleanly shaven he will be required to shave here at school, if he refuses to do so, he will be removed from class for the day. I ask for your support in ensuring your son is coming to school clean shaven. Fatality Free Friday May 30 Each night on the news we hear or read in the papers about the latest road accident that has resulted in fatalities and horrific injuries. I recently read an article in The Age on Monday of a family whose lives have irreversibly changed as the result of road accidents. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/for-one-familytheres-no-end-to-trauma-20140525-38ww3.html As a member of community we need to ask what can I do to make the roads safer for everyone. Melton City Council is holding an event on Wednesday 28 May 2014 to raise awareness for Fatality Free Friday, which is the 30 May. Fatality Free Friday is held on the last Friday in May each year and urges all road users to take the pledge as a commitment to themselves, their family and friends to drive safely on this day.

The event will be held from 12pm-2pm at the Courthouse Amphitheatre, High Street, Melton (behind the Visitor Information Centre). At the event, community members will be taking a ‘road safety pledge’ to be safe on the roads on Fatality Free Friday, and every other day. There will be police and other emergency services, Council information, free child restraint fittings, resources and giveaways and a free BBQ. The road safety campaign is more than just a single day although the target is to have a Fatality Free Friday, the ultimate aim is for long-term community change. Take the pledge to drive safely http://www.fatalityfreefriday.com/individual/ Robert Blackley Deputy Principal-Students

Next Generation Youth Forum

Uniform Shop News We are no longer going to sell secondhand shirts, blouses, trousers, boys shorts and school bags at the Uniform shop. Any parent who thinks they may have any of these items that have not been sold, are welcome to collect them. Otherwise any of these items left at the start of Term 3 will be donated to Welfare. Please note: other secondhand items will still be sold but must be in very good condition. No fading, holes, ripped seams and must be clean or drycleaned.

On Friday the 23rd May a small group of leadership students, ranging from Years 10-11 attended the annual Next Generation Youth Forum at La Trobe University in Bundoora. Multiple workshops and sessions were set up in the aim of inspiring young leaders to make a difference in not only their own lives but for the world. Issues ranging from mental illness to helping the less fortunate were brought up and as a result of this, willing minds were given a marvelous opportunity to learn more about how to make a difference and what many inspiring people are already doing in the attempt to change the world for the better. One of the students that attended this seminar, Dyson Miller, said that he “found the day to be a really great opportunity to enhance our leadership qualities and put our dreams and passions together for a unique purpose.” All that went, strongly agree to this and were so thankful for the amazing chance that was given to the students by the Leadership Coordinator, Miss Laura Grech; who hopes that, with the new found knowledge and understanding, the leadership team can improve our growing community at Catholic Regional College Melton and allow us to get involved more with the problems being faced. The forum was truly inspirational and taught that “whatever the role, make an impact” and that’s what the leadership team plan to do. Tempest Ardley
