27th October, 2015 Reflection May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we may live deep within our hearts. We are called to love. May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may work for economic justice for all people. We are called to be just. May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, hunger, homelessness and rejection, so that we may reach out our hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy. We are called to compassionate action. And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in the world so that we can do what others claim cannot be done. We are called to serve the poor. Amen. (taken from the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative)

The Year 12 Graduation Mass was a fitting finale for the Year 12 class of 2015 - a celebration of the Eucharist presided by Fr Brian Glasheen, Fr John O’Reilly and Fr Charles, followed by the Graduation Ceremony. Oh what a night! By Father Brian Glasheen

Term 4 Key Dates

Six years, where has it gone? What has happened? An opportunity to look back. You came here timidly, perhaps even frightened ‘little fish in a big pond’ but there was a promise of good things to come. You came to listen, you came to learn.

With the last week of October upon us we enter into end of year assessment programs over the next weeks. Last week’s newsletter outlined all events. Below is highlighted activities taking place next week. Melbourne Cup Day

You have made good relationships with students, teachers, other families, maybe even students from other schools. You came with potential and some of this has been realised. You have learnt a lot. You have done things that you never dreamt about doing. You have acquired skills in the Performing Arts. You have learnt how to prepare food and meals. You have learnt many things. You may have even learnt something about God through your study of the scriptures in Biblical Studies. Hopefully, you have learnt a lot about yourself. You have learnt how to relate to others. You’ve learnt about others outside of yourself. Maybe you have learnt that the hand of the Lord has fed you and that He answers all your needs, while you know the Lord is full of compassion and abounding in love and kindness, maybe some of this has rubbed off on you. Hopefully you have learnt that to ‘be just’ with others, maybe you have learnt that your parents know more than you ever dreamt they knew. Maybe you have learnt what great sacrifices they have made to send you to Catholic Regional College, Melton. Maybe you have learnt that your parents have provided you with wonderful opportunities they never had. Maybe you have learnt to love others and even love yourself. Maybe you have realised that you have something to offer others. Maybe you are coming to realise that you could be a light that shines brightly for others. You may not be an ‘elder’ yet but you could be a witness for truth, compassion, love, justice, integrity and hospitality in this crazy mixed up world of ours.

Tuesday, November 3 is the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday. The College has a mid-Term break on Monday, November 2. VCAA exams will still operate. Years 7 & 8 Apart from timed assessment tasks that will operate in normal class times, all Year 7 & 8 students will do a Timed Assessment Task in Mathematics and English at the same time. These assessment tasks will take place in Padua Exam Centre and take the place of the normally timetabled class. These are listed below. Thursday November 5

Year 12 2015 VCAA exams begin Wednesday, October 28th until Friday, November 20. Students need to be at the College at least 30 minutes before the exam published reading time to ensure smooth entry into the exam venues. Students may wear casual clothes. The Graduation Dinner will be held on Friday 20th November. Year 12 2016 VCAL Jumpstart Finishes Thursday 29th October.

You may not realise it but you have been on a journey in which you are being formed as persons. Most of you have come a long way even though there is still a long way to go. It takes a long time. Hopefully many of you will have received the gifts of the Spirit. Some may see the fruits of the Spirit issuing forth from others. I pray that you will be the Salt of the Earth and the Light of the Word and that this light will shine for others to see. No doubt you will be an example for others. You will be those who lead the Church and our Nation for the twenty first Century.

Year 10 & Year 11 Classes finish next Friday, November 6. Exams start the following Monday. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff)

Intermediate VCAL - Sausage Sizzle

Year 11 Biology Excursion

The Intermediate VCAL class ran a sausage sizzle on Thursday 22nd October to raise money for The National Stroke Foundation. A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Blood is carried to the brain by blood vessels called arteries. Blood contains oxygen and important nutrients for your brain cells. Blood may be interrupted or stop moving through an artery, because the artery is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or bursts (haemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients, they die. The area of brain damage is called a cerebral infarct. We successfully raised over $238.00 on the day! Thanks to all involved.

This is a reminder that deposits of $300 are due by 11th November for students keen to travel to Italy and France in 2017.

On Wednesday October 21, the Year 11 Biology students attended an excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The purpose of the day was to gather data and information about the grassland ecosystem including: the various environmental factors affecting it; threatened species within this habitat and what can be done to save these species; adaptations possessed by the different animals viewed on the safari tour; as well as some sightseeing. Our students were very excited to get out of the classroom and were able to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to a real-life ecosystem in action. Students returned with a broader understanding of the various interactions that occur within ecosystems, and they have quality information to use in their final SAC for Unit 2 Biology. Thank-you to John Christie and Marion Jackson who attended and helped with the organisation and running of the day. Finally, the students are to be congratulated on representing the College so well and for making the most of this opportunity.
